Premium petrol increased by Rs 2 per liter amid global oil surge

The retail prices of regular petrol and diesel and aviation turbine fuel remain unchanged. Officials said less than 5% people use premium grade petrol in their vehicles.“There has been some growth in the premium category, which is barely 2-4% of the total petrol sold in the country,” said Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the petroleum ministry. Sharma said petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in 2010 and 2014, respectively, and are decided independently by oil companies.Crude oil costs for Indian refiners have risen 120% since the Gulf conflict began on February 28, reaching $156.29 a barrel on Friday, eroding profits of domestic oil marketing companies. The price of global benchmark Brent crude also neared $110 a barrel, nearly 50% higher than the pre-conflict price of $72.87.Officials said OMCs make profits when rates are low and absorb losses when crude prices are high.According to oil companies, high-speed diesel is now available at Rs 109.59 per liter for industrial users in Delhi. Officials of oil marketing companies said diesel prices of this category are linked to international prices and are automatically revised every fortnight.In Delhi, the price of a liter of normal petrol – which has an octane rating of 91 and is suitable for standard engines – remains at Rs 94.77, while diesel of the same grade is priced at Rs 87.67 per litre. Retail prices of regular petrol and diesel were last revised in April 2022.India imports about 90% of its crude oil needs and about half of its natural gas needs, which has been disrupted due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
