Indian-origin politician Karishma Kalianda in Australia criticizes Liverpool mayor for tampering with her address: 'Completely unacceptable'

An Indian-origin Labor MP has accused the Mayor of Liverpool of betraying her, after police were called to a tense clash at a polling station during a by-election campaign.Karishma Kalianda said her safety was in danger after her home address was shared in a social media post related to a local political dispute.“I am aware that the mayor published a social media post last night publicizing my home address,” Kalianda said, according to an Australia Today report.“For a political opponent to publish my home address is completely unacceptable. This is not just a political tactic, it is fraudulent and potentially criminal conduct.”He warned that the incident had serious implications beyond politics: “It puts my safety and the safety of those around me at serious risk… No one should feel unsafe in their home because of their work in public service.”According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the post was shared by Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun and later shared by several people, including Liberal councilor and South Ward candidate Richard Ammon.Mannoun later removed the original video and uploaded a modified version removing sensitive details. Responding to the backlash, he said, “I regret that a publicly available document was published.”The controversy has come as the campaign intensifies ahead of the Liverpool City Council by-elections. Tension flared up at a pre-poll center in Casula Community Centre, where police were called after a verbal altercation between candidates.Independent candidate Jamal Dawood said the controversy escalated after he was questioned over claims related to council affairs. Ammon denied wrongdoing and said he was addressing misinformation.Kalianda condemned this conduct, saying, “This behavior crosses a clear line. This is dangerous, unacceptable and unfit for public office.”New South Wales Police arrived at the scene after being contacted by an election worker but later ruled the incident a civil matter and took no further action. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Deputy Mayor Betty Green earlier this year, with thousands of residents expected to vote.

'We will not allow North-South division': Amit Shah hits back at opposition on delimitation
Union Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah On Friday he hit out at the opposition over its criticism of the Women’s Reservation Bill and the proposed delimitation, accusing it of pushing the “North-South divide narrative”.Speaking in the Lok Sabha ahead of voting on the bill, Shah sought to garner support and said delimitation would ensure fair and equal representation across states.“Let me make it clear once again: the Southern States have the same rights in this House as the Northern States. In fact, even a small Union Territory like Lakshadweep has the same rights as Uttar PradeshGujarat and Bihar,” he said.Addressing concerns about the “North-South divide”, Shah cautioned against framing the issue in regional terms. He said, “This country should not be divided through such narratives, not the North-South narrative and not any other divisive framework. It should not be broken into pieces like this. What are they trying to mean? When the members sitting in this House think about which state they come from when they speak or take decisions? … When we take the oath, we do so with complete sincerity and heart.”He further accused critics of misusing constitutional discourse.Shah said, “Those who have taken the constitutional oath are now trying to promote the narrative of North-South divide. We will not let this happen…”Backing his argument with numbers, the Home Minister said the southern states will not lose representation after delimitation.“Karnataka, Andhra PradeshTelangana, Tamil Nadu and Keralam – Out of 543 parliamentary seats, the strength of these five states is currently 129, which is 23.76%. After the 50% increase, when we allocate seats for these five states, it will increase from 129 to 195, representing 23.87% of the 816 seats. No one will be harmed,” he said.Taking a strong dig at the Centre’s proposal on women’s reservation, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav said, “Based on the experience of almost 11 years, even if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gives a written assurance that they will appoint a woman Prime Minister, we will still not trust them…”

Australia denies asylum to Indian man who converted from Hinduism to Christianity; Tribunal says there is no risk of loss on return

Australia denies asylum to Indian man who converted from Hinduism to Christianity; Tribunal says there is no risk of loss on return

An Indian man who converted from Hinduism to Christianity has failed in his bid to gain asylum in Australia, with a tribunal ruling that he faces no real risk of harm if he returns home. The decision was issued after Australia’s Immigration and Protection Tribunal rejected the claim last month. It said the applicant’s fear of harassment was “manifestly unfounded”. The tribunal stated that the evidence presented did not meet the threshold required for refugee protection.“The evidence does not establish a risk of harm that is more than mere speculation or a remote or random possibility,” the tribunal said, Australia Today reported. The applicant is a 23-year-old man from Uttarakhand and had entered Australia on a visitor visa in October 2023. He soon began attending church and formally converted to Christianity in June 2024, around the same time he applied for asylum. In his claim he alleged that his family members in India were not happy with his religious conversion. He spoke of a physical assault by an uncle and an attack on his family home in March 2025.However, the tribunal identified inconsistencies and shortcomings in his account. It said the man had not contacted Indian authorities for protection or assistance.“He did not make any complaint to the police… nor did he seek the assistance of the courts,” the tribunal said. He said there was no evidence that he had attempted to gain state protection. The Tribunal acknowledged that the applicant may have experienced violence, but ruled that these incidents did not amount to persecution under refugee law. There was also no indication that the risk of harm would increase upon their return to India. The decision further stated that the individual can move safely within the country. Major cities like Delhi and Mumbai were cited as viable options where they would not face any threat.“There is no possibility of this [those involved] Knowing that the Appellant has returned… or is staying in that city,” the tribunal said. The Tribunal ultimately ruled that the applicant did not qualify for refugee or protected person status under international conventions, including the Refugee Convention and the Convention against Torture. “The appellant is not a refugee… the appeal is dismissed,” the ruling said.
