Srinagar: Ahead of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, security has been beefed up across the Kashmir valley. Officials said vigilance has been increased and precautionary mechanisms have been strengthened, but efforts are on to avoid unnecessary public alarm.On April 22, 2025, terrorists attacked the beautiful Baisaran grasslands, also known as “Mini Switzerland”, about 7 km from Pahalgam town in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, killing 25 tourists and a local pony. Following this, around 44 tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir were closed as a precautionary measure. Most have reopened, but authorities remain closed to visitors. Chandanwari is also closed in Pahalgam. Officials said there is no clear timeline for reopening Baisaran.Senior officials reviewed the security situation in various areas on Monday. South Kashmir DIG Javed Iqbal Mattoo visited Pulwama district and chaired a “comprehensive crime and security review meeting”.A police spokesperson said, “During the meeting, a detailed review of the overall crime scenario, investigation of cases, NDPS cases and preventive measures was taken. The DIG reviewed the existing security scenario with special focus on anti-terrorism efforts and strengthening of anti-terrorism grid in the district.” He said that emphasis was laid on increasing coordination among security agencies, increasing territorial dominance and strengthening intelligence networks to thwart any attempt by anti-national elements.Officials were directed to maintain a high level of vigilance and ensure prompt and effective response to any security challenge, the spokesperson said. Mattoo also visited police district Awantipora and chaired a security review meeting.SSP Dr. GV Sandeep Chakraborty presided over the security review meeting in Srinagar. “The overall crime scenario of district Srinagar was reviewed in detail. Intensive discussions were held to enhance the quality of investigation and prosecution in cases registered under the UAP Act, NDPS Act and general crime categories, with a focus on improving conviction rates,” the police spokesperson said.
