DHAKA: Bangladesh on Thursday summoned acting Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pawan Badhe and expressed protest over comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and stressed on avoiding comments that could damage bilateral relations.Director General (South Asia) Ishrat Jahan briefed the acting Indian High Commissioner on the situation in Dhaka during a meeting at the Ministry of External Affairs (MoFA). Bangladesh described the comments as derogatory to Bangladesh-India relations and expressed its displeasure towards India, a diplomatic source said. However, MoFA did not release any official statement.Sarma said on 26 April that 20 foreign nationals were caught in Assam and deported back to Bangladesh.According to Indian media reports, Sarma said in a post on Twitter, “Uncivilized people do not understand soft language. When we drive out infiltrators from Assam who do not turn themselves in, we constantly remind ourselves of this predicament. For example, these 20 illegal Bangladeshis who were pushed back last night.”Bangladesh stressed that public statements that create tension in relations between the two neighbors are counterproductive, and highlighted the importance of exercising restraint when addressing sensitive bilateral issues.
