Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Monday canceled the detention of Mehraj Malik, the lone AAP MLA in the Union Territory Assembly, under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) and directed the authorities to release him immediately.Granting relief to the Doda East MLA, Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani said the charges against him essentially fall within the ambit of ordinary law and order and cannot be stretched to justify preventive detention. Malik was detained about eight months ago on charges of misbehavior with a senior Doda official.Malik (37) termed the PSA detention order issued by Doda DM as arbitrary, politically motivated and an abuse of preventive detention powers and demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore from the authorities. The HC held that the allegations against Malik are under investigation or at the trial stage before the courts and there is no apprehension that he will commit acts prejudicial to public order. However, the government defended the action, arguing that Malik had a tendency to disturb public order and that his detention followed reports from the police, magistrate officials and other inputs.Malik has been kept in Kathua jail. Malik’s lawyer and AAP spokesperson Appu Singh Salathia said, “We have won this legal battle. This has strengthened our faith in the judiciary. It was a tough journey of eight months. But as the saying goes, all’s well that ends well. Soon Malik will be with all of us and his supporters.”

India submits its new climate action pledge to UN body, marks conditions for delivering on its promise | india news

भारत ने संयुक्त राष्ट्र निकाय को अपनी नई जलवायु कार्रवाई प्रतिज्ञाएँ प्रस्तुत कीं, अपने वादे को पूरा करने के लिए शर्तों को चिह्नित कियाIndia in its presentation promised to achieve 60% cumulative installed capacity of its electric power from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2035 “with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance”; reducing emissions intensity (emissions per unit of GDP) by 47% from 2005 levels by 2035; and create carbon sinks equivalent to 3.5 to 4.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ through forest and tree cover by 2035 on 2005 stocks.Apart from these three quantitative targets, India in its presentation on April 24 made five other points which include efforts to mobilize new and additional finance domestically and from developed countries to implement adaptation and mitigation actions; Promote a healthy and sustainable way of living; Capacity building; Align with the vision of ‘Vikit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047; and better adaptation to climate change by increasing investment in development programs in sectors vulnerable to climate change, especially agriculture, water resources, Himalayan region, coastal areas, health and disaster management.Marking the conditions in meeting climate commitments, India in its submission said, “A significant part of the NDCs of developing countries is dependent on the availability of adequate means of implementation, especially finance, technology transfer and capacity building.“Without adequate funding, technology cooperation and capacity building, these conditional commitments cannot be met, resulting in an ambition gap that undermines the collective objectives of the Paris Agreement.”India also clarified in its document that the country’s NDC does not commit to any specific emissions reduction obligations for individual sectors, including agriculture. “The objective is to reduce the overall emissions intensity of our economy by promoting the deployment of clean energy and increasing energy efficiency, as well as protecting vulnerable sectors and communities,” it said.India reminded rich countries of their obligations, saying under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement, developed countries are obliged to provide finance, technology and capacity building assistance to tackle climate change.“In return, India will need a fair share of these resources and support to pursue its climate goals. Effective implementation of India’s NDCs depends on the provision of additional support such as financial resources, technology transfer and capacity building by developed countries in accordance with the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement,” the document said.Countries’ NDCs are non-binding, voluntary climate action commitments that are submitted every five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. India presented its first NDC in 2015 for the target year 2030 which was later updated to 2022.Both times India had flagged the necessary conditions to the UN body by reminding it of the promise of developed countries to support developing countries, including India, to implement their climate action goals. However, the country has fulfilled some of its commitments and is on track to meet the remaining commitments from domestic finance. As of 28 February, India’s non-fossil fuel based electricity installed capacity was over 52.5% of total installed capacity, while the emissions intensity of its GDP declined by 36% between 2005 and 2020.“India is on track to create an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.5 to 3.0 billion tonnes of CO2 through forest and tree cover by 2030. During 2005 to 2021, an additional carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent has been created,” India said in its submission.Outlining the country’s priority, the document says, “India aims to meet its ambitious targets of universal access to services such as water, sanitation, waste management, affordable housing, electricity in line with the short and medium horizon targets set by the government’s current initiatives, including the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Amid defection in BJP, Ajay Maken told that the average wealth of 7 Rajya Sabha MPs of AAP is Rs 818 crore. india news

Ajay Maken says average worth of Kejriwal's 7 Rajya Sabha MLAs is Rs 818 crore
The political arena has become heated as Congress has expressed dissatisfaction over AAP’s Rajya Sabha candidates and branded them as elitist with an impressive average wealth of Rs 818 crore. Ajay Maken argues that AAP acts as a puppet for the BJP, designed to disrupt Congress’s support in the upcoming state elections.

New Delhi: Seven Rajya Sabha MPs of Aam Aadmi Party are joining BJPThe Congress said Arvind Kejriwal nominated members to the Upper House on the basis of their monetary strength, claiming that the average net worth of current turncoats is Rs 818 crore.congress treasurer Ajay Maken Said in a press conference that all seven people who left AAP and joined BJP were millionaires, who had never even issued a statement in favor of AAP till they were nominated for Parliament. He said, “What kind of common man is this? Kejriwal should change the name of the party to ‘Crorepati Aadmi’.”Maken said, “I tried to calculate the total assets of the seven MPs, but the total amount was shocking. So, I took the average. And, it comes to Rs 818 crore per MP.”Maken claimed that he was always aware of the Rajya Sabha nomination in AAP, as Sushil Gupta, who was a Congress functionary, had come to him in 2017 and asked to be relieved of the party membership because “he had a ‘setting’ in AAP and would be made a Rajya Sabha MP”.He said the large-scale defection in the BJP has exposed the reality that the BJP had formed AAP as a proxy to counter the Congress, which it was not able to fight until 2014. He said, “India’s two best administrators were Sheila Dikshit and Manmohan Singh, and Kejriwal was used to defame them…This led to the BJP coming to power.”Maken said AAP contests elections in states where Congress and BJP are in direct competition and splits the votes to benefit BJP, naming Haryana, Goa, Gujarat as some of them.“We always knew the reality but now the mask has been revealed to the allies of the Indian faction and we hope they will see the reality of AAP,” he said, underlining that the Congress had struck an electoral pact with Kejriwal under pressure from its Indian allies. He claimed that the BJP is playing a dangerous game through defection as it now has 86% MPs from Punjab while it got only 6.6% votes in the 2022 state elections. He said, “Separatists claim that the voice of Punjab is being suppressed. BJP’s game of capturing MPs from Punjab is emboldening the separatists.”

VHP raises issue of ‘atrocities’ on minorities to UNGA chief before India tour

New Delhi: A day ahead of UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock’s visit to India, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has written to her calling for “persistent atrocities” against religious minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh and sought immediate intervention of the UN.In a letter dated April 27, VHP international president Alok Kumar cited examples of forced conversions, violence and systemic discrimination targeting Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christians. “The scale and persistence of these serious human rights violations points to systemic discrimination,” he wrote, urging the United Nations to take “affirmative action to protect the lives, rights, dignity and properties of minorities.”Citing findings by UN human rights experts, the letter said that in Pakistan, “about 75% of women and girls affected by forced conversion through marriage were Hindu and 25% were Christian,” with “about 80% of the incidents” taking place in Sindh province. “Adolescents aged 14 to 18 are particularly targeted…women and girls…facing coercion…abuse and severe trauma,” it said. It said authorities often “dismiss complaints… fail to investigate or prosecute… or neglect to properly assess the age of victims”.On Bangladesh, the VHP cited the report submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, which said that “from August 4 to 20, 2024 alone… 2,010 incidents of communal violence were recorded”, “primarily targeting Hindus”. The letter also cites concerns over the safety of indigenous communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts area.Alleging continued oppression, Kumar said the assurance of equal rights to minorities after Partition was “unfortunately… overturned”. The VHP has demanded an independent international investigation, a victim protection mechanism and accountability under international law.Copies were sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

'Why are you fighting?' You are 80': Supreme Court issues notice in Sanjay Kapoor property dispute, urges meditation

New Delhi: In a fresh development in the property dispute involving late businessman Sanjay Kapoor, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on Rani Kapoor’s plea, seeking response from Priya Sachdev Kapoor and 22 others.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi also indicated that mediation may be resorted to to resolve the matter, noting that prolonged litigation in family disputes may not be beneficial.“Why are you all fighting? You are 80 years old. This is not the age to fight for your client. Go for arbitration from A to Z once and for all. Otherwise, it is a waste,” the court was quoted as saying by ANI. The matter is to be heard next week. The petition before the Supreme Court seeks directions to restrain the respondents from interfering in the property, its properties and related matters.Emphasizing the need for an amicable solution, the bench said, “It would be in the interest of all the parties concerned if they go for mediation and try to resolve the disputes in a peaceful and equitable manner… If necessary, we will hear the case on merits; however, first we should try to persuade the parties to mediate.” Rani Kapoor has also challenged the orders passed by the Delhi High Court, arguing that the property has not yet been secured and raising concerns over possible squandering of the property.Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for him, said courts generally grant protective orders at the initial stage in disputes involving large properties. He was assisted by senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar and advocate-on-record Smriti Churiwal.Senior advocate Madhavi Divan appeared for one of the affected parties, Mandhira Kapoor Smith, while senior advocate Naveen Pahwa, representing the affected grandchildren, supported the plea saying they have been excluded. The dispute stems from a lawsuit filed by Rani Kapoor, challenging the creation of the Rani Kapoor Family Trust, alleging that it was structured in a way that deprived her of control over her assets, including her interests in Sona Group. He has claimed that after he suffered a stroke in 2017, his late son and others facilitated the transfer of assets without his consent. The issue escalated following Sanjay Kapoor’s death last year, with competing claims over control of family assets and business interests emerging. Parallel proceedings on related issues are currently pending before the Delhi High Court.
