Hostel life at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur became happier when a group of students decided not to let the raw mangoes that fell due to a storm go to waste. Instead of ignoring the mangoes scattered around the campus, he turned them into homemade pickles right inside his hostel – and the internet is loving every bit of it.The now-viral video was posted on Instagram by student Ajay Patel, giving viewers a fun glimpse of the pickle making session going on inside BC Roy Hall. Introducing his friend Narayan in the clip, Patel jokingly says that IIT students don’t just study engineering – they also know how to make mango pickle.Narayan then walks the audience through the process like a professional. He says that after the recent storm that hit the campus, many unripe mangoes fell from the trees around the hostel. The students collected them, cut them and mixed the pieces with turmeric and salt before keeping them aside to dry in the sun for a few days.He also proudly displays the spice mix he has prepared for the pickle. According to them, the mix includes mustard seeds, fennel, nigella seeds and fenugreek – basically all the ingredients needed for that classic homey flavor that many Indians instantly recognise.The video also shows a glimpse of mango trees standing inside the hostel premises. Patel explains that there are a lot of them in BC Roy Hall and due to the ongoing stormy weather, mangoes are falling regularly. Although there was obviously not a large harvest this season, the students decided to make the most of what they got.Ending the clip happily, Patel says that he will show everyone the final pickle when it is ready and packed in jars.The video, which was captioned, “Mango pickle inside IIT hostel”, instantly created a stir online. Officials said that the age of the victim is said to be around 17 years and her identity has not been established yet.He further said that the body was recovered from a government school located in Sopodera village of Parsudih police station area.The body was first seen by the operator of an Anganwadi center running in the school premises. Parsudih police station in-charge Avinash Kumar said that the operator immediately informed the police, after which a team reached the spot and started investigation.Later the body was sent to MGM Hospital for post-mortem to find out the exact cause of death.Efforts are being made to identify the girl. Police said that neighboring police stations have been asked to verify the missing complaints lodged in their respective jurisdictions.“We have asked neighboring police stations to verify the missing reports in their respective areas to establish the identity of the victim. Local people told us that the girl was not from Sopodera village,” Kumar said.Asked whether the case was related to rape and murder, the officer said no indication of sexual assault was found during the preliminary investigation.The official further said, “The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report comes.”
