Rajvinder Singh Grewal, 35, was driving when his car crashed and a young passenger died

An Indian Uber driver accused of falling asleep behind the wheel and causing a fatal crash in Perth has been allowed to work as a truck driver while on bail. He worked 22-hour shifts, The West Australian reports.Rajvinder Singh Grewal, 35, was allowed to work as a goods driver between 9am and 4pm on Monday, subject to a curfew outside those hours. They are banned from running passenger transport.The court heard the alleged accident happened at about 3.40pm on March 28 in Lynnwood, when Grewal was driving a silver Toyota Kluger with his mother and her two young children. He fell asleep while driving and crashed into a tree. A seven-month-old baby died in the accident, while the woman and another child were injured.Grewal is alleged to have worked for 22 hours before the collision. Police told the court that they had obtained dashcam footage from inside the vehicle in which he was seen sleeping several times before the accident.He has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He has not yet entered a plea and is due to face Perth Magistrates Court on August 11.During the bail variation hearing on Monday, his lawyers said he had taken breaks throughout the day and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He also said that he was not driving at high speed at the time of the incident.Prosecutors say fatigue was a factor in the crash, and Grewal was working both a ride-sharing job and a second job driving freight at the same time.An Uber spokesperson said the company has “fatigue management processes and tools” to force drivers to take an 8-hour break from the app after working 12 cumulative hours, but Grewal was also working a second freight job, 7News reported.After the accident, Grewal previously worked as a rideshare driver and has since been banned from carrying passengers. Under the new bail conditions, he is only allowed to work as a goods driver within prescribed hours.Grewal left the court wearing a hat, sunglasses and a surgical mask and did not answer questions from reporters.
