PM Modi quotes Ambedkar to advocate reservation for women

New Delhi: On the occasion of BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi said the proposed constitutional amendment related to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (Women’s Reservation Act) is guided by the spirit of “equality and inclusivity”, which was emphasized in the Constitution drafted by him. “Our democracy will become stronger and vibrant if the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and various assembly elections in that year are held with full women’s reservation,” the PM said in a letter addressed to the women of the country ahead of a three-day special session of Parliament beginning on Thursday. “And for this, upcoming legislation should be passed in Parliament. Any further delay in this would be unfortunate and would be a grave injustice to the women of India,” Modi said. When women become active participants in policy and decision making, the journey towards a ‘Developed India’ will become stronger. He stressed that there can be no compromise on women’s participation while adding more strength to India’s development path. The PM said that because of this principle the law was passed in 2023 and this amendment is the need of the hour. He said that with the excellent performance of women in all fields, there has long been a broad consensus on enhancing their role in legislative bodies. She cited Sardar Patel’s efforts to reserve seats for women in the Ahmedabad Municipality and said India had given equal voting rights at the time of independence. Decades of efforts failed. She urged women to write letters to MPs to support the amendment ahead of the “historic” session, as India works towards a ‘developed India’ by 2047.
