$20,000 for green card: A California man posed as an ICE officer and duped immigrants seeking US citizenship
A California man posed as a US immigration officer to swindle huge sums of money from vulnerable immigrants. He pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, NBC San Diego reports.David George Brand Jimenez, 55, admitted in a Los Angeles court this week that he impersonated a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent to defraud immigrants seeking legal status in the United States.Brand Jimenez targeted undocumented members of the Latino community, promising to help them secure work permits, legal residency and citizenship, and even green cards. Despite having no authority or ability to provide such services, they charged each victim between $10,000 and $20,000.According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), he pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, identity theft and illegal use of government seals, as well as 10 counts of falsely impersonating a federal official. Sentencing is scheduled for July 16, and he could face up to 117 years in prison, as well as a $4 million fine and more than $152,000 in compensation to at least 25 victims.Brand Jimenez not only claimed to be an ICE agent, but also misrepresented himself as a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official. In some cases, he told victims he was a “G-18” officer, a position that does not exist. He never filed valid immigration applications on behalf of his victims. Instead, he created fake documents using their names along with forged Homeland Security symbols to make his claims appear genuine. In one instance, he even presented a fabricated order withholding deportation to make a victim believe they would not be deported.Despite paying large fees in hopes of securing a better future, the scheme left dozens of victims penniless and without any legal immigration benefits. This case is one of several frauds targeting immigrant communities, particularly those seeking legal pathways to live and work in the United States.

The new setup is expected to be led by a former investment banker who is also an opposition politician. The move comes after Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reportedly held discussions with Silva over the weekend regarding the restructuring of the board and the introduction of new governance.Governance concerns and previous ICC suspensionsSri Lanka Cricket, the country’s richest sports organization, has been accused of corruption and administrative mismanagement for a long time. The latest developments add to the ongoing investigation into its functioning. The International Cricket Council had suspended Sri Lanka’s membership in November 2023, citing political interference in board affairs – a rare but serious sanction. The suspension was lifted in January 2024 following assurances on autonomy, allowing Silva’s administration to return and remain in office.Sri Lanka’s struggles on the field have further compounded the crisis. The team recently suffered an early exit from the T20 World Cup, which it co-hosted with India, further intensifying calls for changes to the system.Silva had previously secured a fourth consecutive term unopposed, but the latest intervention signals a significant change in direction, with officials now pushing for reforms aimed at restoring credibility and stability to Sri Lankan cricket.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday issued a statement condemning the “terrorist attacks” that took place at several places in Mali. “India strongly condemns the terrorist attacks targeting multiple locations in Mali. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and express our solidarity with the Government and people of Mali at this difficult time. We also express our sincere condolences on the death of General Sadio Camara, Mali’s Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, in the terrorist attack, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release. “India reiterates its firm commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and supports efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region,” it said.Mali is battling its biggest coordinated terrorist attack in more than a decade, as al-Qaeda-linked groups and Tuareg separatists launched near-simultaneous attacks on key sites including Bamako’s airport, the Kati garrison city and several cities in the north and centre. The defense minister was reportedly killed in a car bomb attack, while rebels claimed control of the strategic northern town of Kidal. The attack signals a sharp deterioration in security despite Russian support for the military government, with rebels stepping up operations and state control weakening across the country.

Manesar civic body to promote water conservation, plans revival of reservoirs. gurgaon news
Gurgaon: The MCM has directed officials to prepare a framework for rainwater harvesting and step up water conservation efforts, with a focus on rejuvenating natural water bodies and preventing water crisis.Commissioner Mo in the review meeting Pradeep Singh Asked engineering officials to conduct surveys and identify ways to collect and store rainwater in the entire municipal corporation area. He said the plan should include creating clusters of villages where ponds can be developed for rainwater harvesting with the option of adding water treatment facilities in the future.“There is a need for rain water harvesting to improve the groundwater level and avoid water crisis in future. I have directed officials to develop a system for collecting and storing rain water to increase the water level,” Singh said, adding that ponds in clusters of villages should be developed in such a way that water treatment plants can be installed to supply water if required.“This will help improve the water level in Manesar in the coming years and reduce the risk of water scarcity. The village ponds should be deepened, as water recharge depends on them,” he said. While reviewing the development works in the corporation area, the Commissioner said that the civil work should be completed before the rainy season. ‘Really stressful’: UK graduate who spent Rs 1 crore on degree fails to get job even after 500 applications
A 21-year-old graduate, who spent almost £100,000 (about Rs 1 crore) on his UK education, says the job market is “broken” after applying for 500 jobs without securing a single offer.Khalid Sharif, who graduated top in his class in digital media technology from Kingston University near London in 2025, has received less than 20 interview calls so far and remains unemployed despite his academic performance. New York Post Informed.Sharif described the experience as “really stressful”, saying, “I graduated top of my class, but I didn’t get anything.”Sharif, who was born in Egypt and grew up in Qatar before moving to Britain at the age of 18, hoped studying in Britain would open up global career opportunities.Instead, he says he has been forced to expand his search beyond his field into sales and other roles that don’t interest him.
‘Flooded’ job market, less openness
He believes that the graduate job market is overly saturated. “The system is flooded with applicants,” he said, adding that companies are also hiring less due to cost pressures, post-pandemic uncertainty and increased use of AI tools.According to him, though he can easily get a job in a supermarket, he wants to work in the field for which he has studied.Despite securing interviews, Sharif says the results were disappointing. “They say I passed the first round, but I got rejected after the second round,” he said.In one instance, he passed several rounds at a multinational tech firm, only to be told that the graduate program had been scrapped.Visa confusion escalates conflictsSharif also believes that his international background may work against him. Although he lives in the UK through his mother and does not need work sponsorship, he says recruiters may think otherwise because of his education history in Qatar.“They probably think I need sponsorship and don’t read the entire application,” he said.
Freelancing, the startup route after struggling to find a job
Not finding full-time opportunities, Sharif has continued to work as a freelance videographer and photographer – skills he developed during college.Reflecting on his education, he admitted that most of his practical knowledge came from real-world experience rather than classroom learning. “To be honest, I didn’t learn much at university. Most of it was YouTube and volunteering,” he said.He now regrets not choosing filmmaking earlier, but says he put it off due to fear of limited job prospects. He said, “I wish I had done filmmaking, but I thought the opportunities would be limited.”
Launched a clothing brand
Sharif has now started her own clothing label, Zoque, which means “my style” in Arabic, combining her interests in fashion and photography. He says the experience has been discouraging but not so discouraging as to give up completely. “More opportunities have to be created,” he said, adding that many other graduates were facing similar struggles in the UK job market.
