No clarity on hearing process of tribunals: SIR leaves voters in limbo in West Bengal

KOLKATA: Not a single applicant who has approached the appellate tribunal against deletion of SIR names nor their lawyers have any clarity about the process to be followed to get back in the voter list.Alok Basu, a resident of Haridevpur, had gone to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation of Joka for two consecutive days – Sunday and Monday – with the hope that the tribunal would hear his case on the ground that his last name was wrongly recorded as ‘Bose’, leading to the name being deleted. But there is no information about the hearing yet.

No clarity on hearing process of tribunals: SIR leaves voters in limbo

“I have contacted my BLO, he doesn’t know. Neighbors – several people – whose names have been omitted, are in touch on whether we are being called for hearing. We don’t know whether we will be heard or whether our fate will be based on the same absurd logic that got us removed in the first place,” Basu said.“They could have had some website where the hearing dates could have been listed,” said Raghunath Chakraborty, a lawyer who provides legal advice extensively to the removed voters in Howrah. Advocates like Chakraborty and advocate Saikat Thakurata are helping people from weaker economic backgrounds file appeals and representing them pro bono. While 16 tribunals have started functioning from Monday, according to Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s letter to the Supreme Court on Monday, the removed electors and their lawyers are confused about how they will be called for hearing and where they can see the orders passed by these tribunals.During the April 6 hearing in the SC, CJI Surya Kant, referring to CJ Paul’s letter, said that a retired Chief Justice had raised the issue regarding the process of providing ‘personal hearing’ to the affected party.Calcutta High Court lawyer Firdous Sameem said, “There is no clarity on how the applicant will be called. Will it be a personal hearing or will the tribunal only go through the documents already submitted. Interestingly, what documents will be given to the tribunal is also now known to the applicant.”He has the experience of appearing for two candidates fielded by Congress and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) namely Motab Shaikh from Farakka and Kechabuddin Shaikh from Kaliganj respectively. In Motab’s case, Sameem physically appeared at Bichar Bhawan, where documents were provided and Motab’s name was later restored, allowing him to stand as a candidate. Citing the Supreme Court order of September 8, 2025, former judge TS Sivaganam said that Aadhaar card can be accepted as a supporting document. Although it is not proof of citizenship, it is “one of the documents enumerated for the purpose of establishing the identity of a person”.Meanwhile, in Kechabuddin’s case, Sameem is given a conference call link and presents his client’s case. Kechabuddin was also present during the hearing. Ultimately, his name was also directed to be included as it was found that it was clear from the documents given that he is a permanent resident of village Haat Gobindpur, Nadia. Sameem suggested that there could be an online platform where the orders are uploaded as the lawyer had also cited Motab’s case as a priority in the petition filed in the Supreme Court on Monday. Even though a three-member panel comprising former CJ TS Sivagnanam, Justice Pradipta Roy and Justice Pranab Kumar Deb was constituted by CJ Sujoy Paul following the April 7 SC order to prepare the SOP, the removed electors are confused about how they will be called for hearing. Now all they have is an ‘Appeal Number’ which was sent via SMS to their registered mobile.

PM Modi cited Ambedkar to advocate reservation for women. india news

PM Modi quotes Ambedkar to advocate reservation for women

New Delhi: On the occasion of BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi said the proposed constitutional amendment related to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (Women’s Reservation Act) is guided by the spirit of “equality and inclusivity”, which was emphasized in the Constitution drafted by him. “Our democracy will become stronger and vibrant if the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and various assembly elections in that year are held with full women’s reservation,” the PM said in a letter addressed to the women of the country ahead of a three-day special session of Parliament beginning on Thursday. “And for this, upcoming legislation should be passed in Parliament. Any further delay in this would be unfortunate and would be a grave injustice to the women of India,” Modi said. When women become active participants in policy and decision making, the journey towards a ‘Developed India’ will become stronger. He stressed that there can be no compromise on women’s participation while adding more strength to India’s development path. The PM said that because of this principle the law was passed in 2023 and this amendment is the need of the hour. He said that with the excellent performance of women in all fields, there has long been a broad consensus on enhancing their role in legislative bodies. She cited Sardar Patel’s efforts to reserve seats for women in the Ahmedabad Municipality and said India had given equal voting rights at the time of independence. Decades of efforts failed. She urged women to write letters to MPs to support the amendment ahead of the “historic” session, as India works towards a ‘developed India’ by 2047.

'What Indians wear to the gym could pose a health risk'

New Delhi: The controversy in the US over chemicals in activewear has raised new concerns about the clothes Indians wear to the gym, with experts warning that the issue goes beyond comfort to potential health risks.Dr Kabir Sardana, professor of dermatology, said, “Most activewear is made of plastic-based polymers that can release chemicals with potential endocrine effects, but in India, we lack the tools to measure this risk. What we see clearly is the effect on the skin – synthetic, tight clothing in hot conditions often causes fungal infections, irritation and higher absorption in areas of natural barrier such as the waist and buttocks.” The trigger came from an April 13 announcement by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said some sportswear products were being investigated for chemicals that may interfere with the endocrine system. Development has focused on endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which are used to add stretch, sweat absorption and odor resistance to fabrics. In India, where synthetic gym wear has become the norm and regulation of textile chemicals remains fluid, the concern is particularly relevant. Chemicals like PFAS and phthalates – globally linked to hormone disruption – are widely used in textile processing. From global labels to domestic players, most of the activewear sold in India depends on chemically treated fabrics.

Zoji La tunnel to Ladakh on the verge of collapse

Srinagar: The Zoji La Tunnel, an upcoming strategic corridor that will provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, is nearing a crucial moment, and engineers are moving towards a “successful” final blast around May 30.Work is going on at about four meters per day from both ends – Sonamarg (Baltal) in Kashmir and Meenamarg in Ladakh – using controlled drilling and blasting. Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) chief operating officer (COO) Harpal Singh told TOI that only 300 meters of the 13.155 km long tunnel remains to be excavated. The Hyderabad-based company is implementing this project.“The final blast will conclude the excavation phase, completing the main structure of the tunnel,” Singh said. He said the blast would indicate physical connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.According to Singh, this historic achievement will be achieved by reducing tunnel excavation to zero within 30 to 35 days. “The breakthrough will ensure expeditious construction of the remaining works including concrete lining, permanent tunnel drainage, installation of monitoring equipment, control building, underground transformer and (traffic) smoke control system,” Singh said. There are still two and a half years left for the tunnel to be completed. Before it is opened to the public, the breakthrough will allow construction teams and machines to move seamlessly between the two ends, streamlining work. “Teams and equipment can move through the tunnel without any hassle,” Singh said, adding that this would help in continuing the construction work in winter when surface movement would be halted due to heavy snowfall in Sonamarg.Officials said the tunnel will reduce the distance between the two ends (Sonamarg and Meenamarg) from 49 km to 43 km and the vehicle speed will increase from 30 km per hour to 70 km per hour.

Toll will have to be paid up to 4 times on overloaded vehicles; It is now mandatory to report the vehicle

New Delhi: From April 15 (Wednesday), it will be impossible to extract toll revenue from overloaded vehicles or under-reporting on national highways. Toll collection agencies will collect higher user charges from overloaded vehicles only through FASTag, and they will have to record such vehicles and report the same on the government’s vehicle portal. The provision for reporting overloading on the vehicle portal is important, as it will enable enforcement agencies to impose penalties for violations of motor vehicle laws. As per the updated MV Act of 2019, the fine for overloading goods vehicles is Rs 20,000, and an additional fine of Rs 2,000 per tonne is also imposed for excess load. The road transport ministry on Tuesday issued a notification amending the NH user charge rules, saying that while overloading up to 10% will be permitted, vehicles with 10-40% overloading will have to pay double the normal amount, and four times that for more than 40% overloading. The ministry said overloading will be determined using certified weighing measuring devices installed at fee plazas. It added that no overload fee will be levied in cases where there is no weighing facility at the fee plaza. It added that the provisions would not apply to certain private investment projects executed before commencement, unless the concessionaires agreed to adopt the revised rules. In an official statement, the ministry said the amendments to toll fee rules are expected to improve compliance, reduce road damage caused by overloaded vehicles and promote safer and more efficient movement of goods on the NH.

Feat of ‘elder brother’: How BJP made Maharashtra strategy in Bihar. india news

Act of 'big brother': How BJP wrote Maharashtra's story in Bihar

New Delhi: ‘Excitement’ is high for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as Bihar is all set to have its own Chief Minister from the saffron party. Samrat Chaudhary was elected leader of the NDA legislature party, paving the way for him to become the first BJP CM of Bihar. And with this, the BJP has once again given a masterclass on “how to form alliances”.Choudhary, who is expected to take oath on April 15, takes over the top post from Nitish Kumar, who resigned the day earlier. This is certainly a high moment for the BJP, which is trying to keep the alliance running smoothly and yet has the upper hand. This announcement also seems like a repeat of the incident in Maharashtra when Devendra Fadnavis was reinstated as the Chief Minister of the state.

‘Big Brother’

For most of the 2000s, the BJP was the silent partner in Bihar, drawing strength from Nitish Kumar’s credibility and caste alliance. In 2005 and again in 2010, it was Nitish who led from the front, with JDU consistently getting more seats than the BJP.However, this balance began to break down in 2014. Nitish’s decision to walk out of NDA after not making Narendra Modi the Prime Ministerial candidate backfired badly. Fighting separately, JDU was reduced to only 2 Lok Sabha seats and Nitish Kumar resigned from the post of CM, taking moral responsibility. In the 2015 assembly elections, the BJP had the largest vote share of 25% and 53 seats, but still fell short of power as the Grand Alliance (RJD – 80; JD(U) – 71) formed a strong social alliance. When Nitish returned to NDA in 2017, BJP was no longer the same player as before. By 2020, it had clearly taken the lead within the alliance, and won significantly more seats than the JD(U). The party got 74 seats and JDU got 43 seats. Although Nitish remained the CM, the equations within the alliance had changed.By 2025, BJP had completely changed the script. NDA had contested the assembly elections by making Nitish Kumar the CM face. However, with 89 seats the BJP once again emerged as the bigger partner compared to the JD(U) which got 85 seats. While Nitish Kumar remained the CM, the BJP took control of key departments like Home. And finally within a year, Bihar managed to give its first BJP CM with Samrat Chaudhary.

Fadnavis’ return

Before Bihar, it was Maharashtra where the BJP had implemented a similar formula. Here, the BJP showed how it could remodel the alliance from within, turn partners into dependents and gain key control without breaking the alliance. There came a time when Devendra Fadnavis had to step down due to the separation of Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joining hands with BJP and Eknath Shinde was made the CM. However, in the 2024 assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party in the ruling grand alliance with 132 seats out of 288. Backed by strong numbers, the BJP insisted on a leadership change and on December 5, 2024, Fadnavis took oath as CM, with Shinde moving into the role of deputy CM.Once back in power, the BJP moved towards centralizing power. Key departments like Home, Finance and Law remained with the CMO, reducing the space to operate for both Shinde and Ajit Pawar, who had also been the Deputy CM. The alliance remained intact, but its internal balance changed decisively. After the death of Ajit Pawar, his wife Sunetra Pawar was given her post in the Maharashtra Cabinet. The electoral strength of BJP has further strengthened its position. In the January 2026 municipal elections, it performed strongly in urban centres, including Mumbai. In both Bihar and Maharashtra, the rise of the BJP within the alliance has shown how the alliance can work without breaking it. By expanding its own voter base and reducing space for its allies, the BJP has shown that alliances can be the path to dominance, not compromise.

Bihar: Nitish Kumar left the center stage; Beginning of BJP era

New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) supremo Nitish Kumar tendered his resignation from the post of Chief Minister on Tuesday BiharTo set the state towards a new era of politics. BJPSamrat Chaudhary is all set to take oath as the next CM.With Lalu Yadav out of active politics and Nitish Kumar now in the Rajya Sabha, it also marks the end of the long-standing political lineage that revolved around the ideals of Jai Prakash Narayan, Karpoori Thakur and Lohia after more than three decades.

Bihar’s DY CM’s puzzle for JDU, Nishant Kumar’s reluctance complicates NDA’s mathematics

Now, the Bharatiya Janata Party – which played second fiddle to Nitish’s JD(U) for a long time – is set to bring Samrat Chaudhary to the center stage as its new CM.end of an eraAfter the total revolution movement during the Emergency, socialist ideology deeply penetrated the state. JP took many young leaders under his control, many of whom later became big leaders of Bihar.Additionally, this was also the era of Karpoori Thakur, during which a new grammar of power emerged, where caste was not hidden under euphemisms, but was talked about as a politics of representation.

.

The convergence of these ideologies led to the emergence of the state’s two tallest leaders – Lalu and Nitish – who cemented the vision of social justice on which Bihar’s identity politics rests.Lalu, a popular leader known for his sense of humor, ruled for more than 15 years. After his fall, Nitish, popularly known as Sushasan Babu, ruled for the next 21 years, which ended on Tuesday.Rise of BJP in BiharHowever, it seems that Nitish’s exit plan was made long ago. After the National Democratic Alliance’s landslide victory and the BJP’s exceptional performance in last year’s assembly elections, rumors started flying that Nitish might step down from the top post, opening the way for the BJP in a state that is under its control and yet out of reach. The rumors proved true when one fateful day, Nitish announced his decision to leave the top post in Bihar for a Rajya Sabha seat to fulfill his personal desire to serve in all four legislative bodies – Bihar Legislative Assembly, Bihar Legislative Council, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.Although many had anticipated the move amid speculations about his deteriorating health, Nitish’s sudden announcement still surprised many who were expecting a smooth transition plan.JD(U) without NitishNitish Kumar remained the only star of his party for decades. Despite not winning an absolute majority on his own, his “good governance babu” image kept JDU at the center of Bihar politics. Nitish’s decision not only ended the political lineage of JP Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur, but also threw his party into uncharted waters with no clear roadmap for the future. The party failed to form a strong second line of leadership. Leaders like Sanjay Jha, Lalan Singh and Vijay Chaudhary are present, but no one has a support base compared to Nitish.

.

Political analysts believe that there is also a possibility that JDU may merge with its ally BJP in the coming days, although such a move may not get unanimous support within the party.“There is also a possibility that BJP and JD(U) may merge in the future, although not everyone in JD(U) will accept such a merger. Many leaders may oppose this. Some leaders within the party may cross over to RJD, while others may join BJP,” political analyst Kumar Vijay told The Times of India. He said, “Earlier, JDU workers also voted for BJP candidates because they believed that Nitish Kumar would ultimately remain the chief minister. But now many staunch workers may refuse to support the BJP in future.”End of the road for JD(U)The situation changed between JD(U) and BJP in the last assembly elections, where BJP emerged as the “big brother”. In the 2025 elections, BJP became the largest party with 89 seats and 20.45% vote share, while JD(U) won 85 seats with 19.61%.After the landslide victory, the BJP started looking less like a coalition partner and more like a contender for the driver’s seat. It secured a major share in the Council of Ministers and Nitish Kumar also had to leave the Home Department.According to PTI, party sources admitted that there was a misunderstanding among workers over the role of Sanjay Jha and some other close aides of Nitish in the recent developments. He said, “Yesterday, when the Chief Minister visited the JD(U) office in Delhi, many party workers insisted that even after he steps down, the top post should not be given to the BJP. These views have been shown by all media outlets and, to an extent, reflect the sentiment prevailing in the party here.”“In Nishant (Nitish Kumar’s son, who recently joined the party), we have a young leader who is capable of replacing his father. However, we also know that our leader is unlikely to push for his son. But, at least, we should emphasize all the benefits that the BJP is currently enjoying, including posts like two deputy CMs, Assembly Speaker and the important home portfolio,” he said.“The BJP, on its part, is acting with swagger. Just look at the urgency with which it nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh to the Rajya Sabha, days after denying him a third consecutive term,” JD(U) sources said.

.

JDU workers have put up posters all over Patna urging Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant to take over the post of Chief Minister. The posters put up by “Nitish servants” called for Nishant Kumar to step into active politics, describing him as a “young leader” and urging him to “come out of the shadows”.The posters read, “We neither need bulldozers, nor riots or unrest in Bihar. We need a young public servant… now is the time for him to come out of the shadows.”What will happen to Nitish Kumar’s EBC vote bank?Over the years, Nitish has established himself as a prominent leader of the Extremely Backward Class (EBC), which forms a significant part of Bihar’s population. He deliberately built this support base by taking advantage of Karpoori Thakur’s legacy and focusing on economically weaker sections. His exit has raised the question as to who will be the successor of this vote bank. According to analyst Kumar Vijay, neither party looks well placed to consolidate non-Yadav OBC and EBC votes.Vijay said, “If Tejashwi Yadav had strong leadership capabilities, that vote bank could have shifted to RJD. But the biggest tragedy in Bihar today is the lack of strong political leadership. Congress does not have it, RJD also does not have it. Despite being a politically mature state, Bihar is facing a serious leadership crisis.”“Upendra Kushwaha has lost credibility. Tejashwi Yadav has not emerged as a grassroots leader.” LJP has also become a dramatic political organization. For Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s move to Rajya Sabha marks the end of a long political chapter defined by his leadership, changing alliances and ‘good governance’ governance model. The coming months will decide how JD(U) and state politics will evolve from them forward.
