King in trouble alphonso mango
wWith a large carving on his face, Omkar Kulkarni points to a huge mango tree in his garden in Nivendi village, near the pilgrimage site of Ganpatipule in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. “This tree dates back to my grandfather’s time. Until recently, it yielded about 70 crates of Alphonso [popularly called Hapus]. “This time I will hardly get 10,” says Kulkarni. About 200 km away in Malvan in neighboring Sindhudurg district, farmer Sanjay Nare echoes Kulkarni’s concerns. In a typical year, he sells about 25,000 boxes of the prized fruit, each containing a dozen; This season, he will be lucky to reach even 5,000.
