Phone sirens startle millions as government launches real-time warning system india news

जैसे ही सरकार ने वास्तविक समय चेतावनी प्रणाली शुरू की, फोन सायरन ने लाखों लोगों को चौंका दिया

People show their mobile phones during the nationwide trial of the new ‘Cell Broadcast Alert System’ in Patna on Saturday.

The phones started shouting. The screens lit up. A passenger lunged for the emergency chain. The theater audience froze. Patients grabbed chairs. Tensions are already running high in West Asia, with many fearing the worst as confusion spread across cities – before being relieved within minutes.Millions of users across India received an “extremely severe warning” around 11.45am on Saturday, which was repeated a few minutes later – part of a nationwide trial of a new cell broadcast-based disaster alert system. The message was clear: no action required. The reaction was anything but. During a children’s play at Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre, around 40 phones started ringing simultaneously, as startled families lined up for the performance. In a suburban train, a passenger tried to pull the emergency chain before others could intervene.

134 billion alerts in different languages

Phone sirens were annoying to some people and scary to others

In hospitals and clinics, alarms interrupt consultations, causing patients to panic.“I immediately switched off my phone thinking it was a bug,” said a resident of Bandra. A visitor to Borivali remembered people shivering from the cold. “It was annoying to some people and scary to others.”Similar scenes were seen in all the states. Before reading further, many people in Bhubaneswar were afraid of hacking or cyber attack. One resident said, “I thought my phone had been attacked, then felt relieved.” In Bengaluru, users mistook it for a heatwave or earthquake warning before clarity emerged. In Lucknow, a pharmacist said that several instruments started ringing simultaneously, causing a brief panic. In New Delhi, Kanika Sharma, a 29-year-old private school teacher, said the sudden movement during lunch sparked fears of global tension before she realized it was a drill. “The tension in West Asia was the first thing that came to my mind… this system could be useful in an emergency,” he said. Others described confusion over repeated alerts. Abhishek Dogra, a 33-year-old IT professional from Jasola in southeast Delhi, said his entire family’s phones rang simultaneously. He said, “At first we were worried, then realized it was a test. It’s a good step, but test messages should be clearly marked.”Officials later confirmed that it was a planned test by the National Disaster Management Authority and the Department of Telecommunications, marking the rollout of a real-time public warning system.Unlike SMS, cell broadcast technology sends alerts simultaneously to all devices within a defined area, overriding silent and do not disturb settings. It does not require any internet, apps or subscription.Alerts appear as full-screen pop-ups with a loud siren, temporarily halting other phone functions.Built on an indigenous platform called SACHET and aligned with the global warning protocol, the system is already operational in all states and union territories. Officials said it has enabled more than 134 billion SMS alerts so far in multiple languages for weather and disaster warnings.Saturday’s drill was aimed at testing reach, speed and public reaction. To enhance understanding, messages were given in English and Hindi as well as regional languages. Not all devices received alerts highlighting the vulnerabilities. Some users reported that one phone was ringing while the other phone next to it was silent – a reminder of the ongoing calibration. Officials said the system will be used for industrial hazards like earthquake, cyclone, flood, lightning and gas leakage. Geo-targeting will allow alerts tailored to specific districts or neighborhoods. In Bihar, officials are planning follow-up preparedness exercises, including blackout and civil defense exercises, later this month to build public familiarity. “This created awareness among the people,” said a senior official.(Input from New Delhi, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad)

IPL 2026, CSK vs MI: Mumbai Indians can still qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs. This way

Mumbai Indians are in all kinds of trouble as they slowly but surely move closer to an early exit from the Indian Premier League 2026. On Saturday, May 2, MI suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. with defeat, MI finished ninth in the table with four points And a net run rate of -0.803, they managed just two wins from nine matches.

Hardik Pandya’s team is in terrible form after losing seven of its last eight matches. Against Super Kings, MI could only score 159 runs for seven wickets after opting to bat first. Naman Dheer, who was dismissed by Will Jacques on 19, top-scored with an innings of 57 runs with the help of four fours and three sixes.

CSK vs MI: highlighted | Achievement:

In reply, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Karthik Sharma scored fifties to help Super Kings reach the target with 11 balls to spare. Mumbai will now look to make a comeback when they face Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Supergiants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, May 4.

How can Mumbai Indians qualify for the playoffs?

Now the question is whether Mumbai Indians will still be able to make it to the playoffs. It’s not impossible, but the probability is low. Their fate is no longer in their own hands as winning all the remaining matches still cannot guarantee qualification. Even if they finish with 14 points, they will have to depend on other results, in which net run rate could play a decisive role.

The 2026 season is the sixth Indian Premier League edition to feature 10 teams, after 2011, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. In these seasons, only once has a team qualified for the playoffs with seven wins (14 points). That example came in 2024, when Royal Challengers Bangalore overtook Chennai Super Kings to enter the top four on the basis of net run rate.

So, from here on out, MI have very little breathing room in the tournament. Not only do they need to keep winning, but they also need to improve their net run rate to ensure they don’t fall behind if qualification comes down to that metric.

Great Nicobar project is important for India’s economic growth and military presence, opposing it will benefit China: Defense giant india news

ग्रेट निकोबार परियोजना भारत की आर्थिक वृद्धि और सैन्य उपस्थिति के लिए महत्वपूर्ण, इसके विरोध से चीन को फायदा होगा: रक्षा दिग्गजMany defense veterans have also expressed their support in favor of the island project.ACM Bhadauria (Retd) has rejected Congress’s criticism as misplaced and highlighted that the project is extremely important for India’s national security, economic development and military posture. He stressed its strategic location to monitor the Strait of Malacca, another chokepoint after Hormuz, to keep an eye on China. Roughly 80% of China’s oil imports and a significant portion of its total cargo pass through this narrow waterway (the Strait of Malacca). With China’s growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean region, India needs a strong economic and military base in the Great Nicobar Islands. The Rs 92,000 crore Great Nicobar mega-infrastructure project includes development of key infrastructure such as transshipment terminals, greenfield international airports, townships and power facilities with limited forest diversion, compensatory afforestation and no proposed displacement of indigenous communities.Bhadauria’s comments come a day after Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Great Nicobar project in Campbell Bay was “one of the biggest scams and serious crimes against the natural and tribal heritage of the country”.On February 16 this year, a bench of the National Green Tribunal had cleared the way for the Great Nicobar project, saying that taking into account its “strategic importance” and “other relevant considerations”, “we do not find any good grounds to interfere”. It had disposed of the applications related to environment clearance (EC) for the project, directing officials to “ensure full and strict compliance with the EC conditions”.Reacting to the opposition to the project, ACM Bhadauria (Retd) said, “It is important to understand it from a strategic perspective, especially in the light of recent events, such as the ongoing conflict (in West Asia) and developments in the Strait of Hormuz.”Strategically, it is important to understand that this project will give us the ability to be located only 150 km from the Strait of Malacca. Our overall domain awareness in both air and maritime domains will get a significant boost.Citing the example of the Gulf crisis, Major General (retd) GS Rawat recently said, “We need to look at this (project) from an operational and strategic perspective, including its geographical alignment and maritime position. Recent global developments have shown how strategic choke points can be exploited, as seen around the Strait of Hormuz.Similarly, the Strait of Malacca assumes even greater importance in the context of global trade and maritime movement… From an operational perspective, control or strong presence along such routes enhances strategic advantage, surveillance capabilities and maritime security. This is where the importance of the Great Nicobar Project lies, as it strengthens India’s position in monitoring and responding to the development of these vital sea routes.Air Vice Marshal PK Srivastava (Retd) said, “Whenever the Government of India undertakes a project, it consults a wide range of expert advisors from different fields. Every project is prepared after taking opinion from experts and conducting proper ground survey of the area. Such projects are not prepared sitting in Delhi alone – teams go to the site and assess all aspects.“Any potential concerns or issues related to the Great Nicobar Island Project would have already been carefully considered during the planning process.”Describing the project as a major strategic and economic win for the country, Major General Sinha (retd) said, “In the maritime sector, the Great Nicobar Project has created a stir in the country. Some people do not want the country to emerge in the world.”Cautioning about China’s moves, former Border Roads Organization director general Lieutenant General (retd) Rajeev Chaudhary said, “If the project is delayed due to protests – especially through international pressure citing environmental concerns – then it may benefit China. Beijing is wary of such a project on Great Nicobar Island as it would increase India’s surveillance of maritime trade and military activities in the area...China’s ‘String of Pearls’ strategy – through ports such as Gwadar Port, Hambantota Port and Kyaukpyu Port – will be countered by a strong strategic and economic hub in Campbell Bay and Galathea Bay…Such opposition or negative narratives may inadvertently align with Chinese interests. This is a necessary project which ideally should have been implemented much earlier.”

After donating billions of dollars to charity, Mackenzie Scott says ‘small acts of kindness matter’ world News

After donating billions of dollars to charity, Mackenzie Scott says 'small acts of kindness matter'

After giving away more than $26 billion since 2019, including nearly $7 billion in 2025 alone, MacKenzie Scott continues to push a message that is at odds with the scale of her philanthropy. In a 2025 essay published on Yield Giving, he highlighted the importance of everyday generosity, arguing that small, frequent acts of kindness are often overlooked despite their collective impact. Citing data about charitable donations, volunteerism and informal support networks, Scott points out that ordinary people contribute huge sums of money and effort every year, shaping communities in ways that go far beyond headline-grabbing donations.

Mackenzie Scott’s message behind the billions

Scott’s argument focuses on the idea that large-scale philanthropy is only one part of a much broader ecosystem of generosity. In his essay, he said that Americans collectively donate hundreds of billions of dollars to charity annually, with a significant portion coming in relatively small amounts. In addition to formal donations, they also referenced financial support sent to family members abroad, participation in crowdfunding, and the economic value of volunteer work and low-paid service roles.Taken together, these contributions are likely to exceed $1 trillion annually, taking into account financial donations and the extensive value of unpaid and underpaid care work. This figure should be understood as a rough estimate of the broader ecosystem of generosity rather than a single standardized figure.

What does the research say about kindness?

Scientific studies largely support the idea that small acts of kindness have measurable psychological benefits. Research in psychology, including tasks such as “counting kindness” studies, has found that people who intentionally perform or reflect on acts of kindness report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction.Other behavioral research has shown that kindness can spread through social groups. In workplace experiments, individuals exposed to small acts of generosity are more likely to engage in similar behavior themselves, leading to increased overall social activity and improved group well-being over time.

small actions matter

Scott’s approach highlights a key point: While large donations can drive systemic change, everyday kindness helps sustain it. Small efforts such as helping a neighbor, offering assistance, or contributing a modest amount of money can impact well-being, strengthen social ties, and encourage others to act similarly.
