India’s oldest living cricketer, CD Gopinath, 96, dies in Chennai. cricket news
Mumbai: 96-year-old CD Gopinath passed away in Chennai on Thursday. Chingleput Doraikannu (CD) Gopinath, a resident of Chennai (formerly Madras), who played eight Tests between 1951–60, was previously India’s oldest living cricketer. Gopinath was the last player to survive India’s first Test victory over England at Madras in 1952.Following his demise, former India, Mumbai and Maharashtra wicketkeeper-batsman Chandu Patankar, aged 95 years and 136 days, is now the oldest living Indian Test cricketer.
Patankar played one Test for India against New Zealand in 1955. “Yes, someone gave me the sad news of Gopinath’s demise today. A friend told me that I am now the oldest living Indian Test cricketer,” Patankar told TOI. Asked how he maintained himself in the 90s, Patankar said, “It’s God’s grace. I don’t make any extra efforts.” After his retirement, Patankar served as the Secretary of the Cricket Club of India for many years. A wicketkeeper and lower-order batsman in his time, Patankar played one Test, the New Year Test, against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in December 1955. He scored 13 and 1 unbeaten runs in that match. He took three catches and also made one stumping in the first innings. However, he missed a tough skier and was dropped from the playing eleven for the fifth Test played at the Madras Corporation Stadium.Patankar, a resident of Parel, was born in Pen in Raigarh district of Maharashtra. He attended Bombay University and obtained an M.Sc. He played first-class cricket for Bombay from 1950 to 1966, then moved to Maharashtra in his last season (1966–67). For the fourth game of Harry Cave’s five-match Test series against New Zealand in 1955–56, Patankar replaced his Bombay wicket-keeping colleague Naren Tamhane, who was injured, but lost his place when Tamhane replaced him for the final game of the series. Patankar thus joins the list of 51 cricketers, including six wicketkeepers, who have played just one Test for India.People close to Patankar describe him as a “good person”. In October 2022, Patankar decided to go to the Wankhede Stadium complex and vote in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) elections. He also participated in the 50th anniversary celebrations of Wankhede Stadium in January 2025.
Marseille miracle: how reducing pollution brought the ocean back to life world News
The regeneration of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows in Marseille represents an important example of marine resilience, demonstrating nature’s ability to recover when pressures imposed by humans are reduced. Over the years, the city’s untreated wastewater has destroyed large sections of Posidonia oceanica grasslands, which provide important ecosystem services such as carbon storage and habitat for many marine species. Following the construction of a new major waste water treatment plant in 1987, as well as the introduction of several industrial use restrictions, researchers have shown that recovery rates have been ‘extraordinary’. The grasslands were able to expand on their own at low cost by using a method called passive restoration, as opposed to the more expensive method of planting seagrass seedlings. Underwater forests (grasslands) now cover large areas of the ocean floor, creating a global model for coastal protection and demonstrating the long-term success of implementing strict pollution control policies.
How pollution cuts brought seagrass back to life in Marseille, France
The research, published in Marine Environmental Research, highlights that the primary driver of the return of Neptune grass was a drastic reduction in organic matter and industrial pollutants. By 1987, the city of Marseille transferred its sewage system to use a treatment plant, which, as a result, produced less filth in the area. As a result, light can penetrate to the sea floor and allow the natural expansion of existing seagrass beds that had been dormant or declining for about 100 years.
Why did nature defeat human intervention?
The study in Marseille showed that passive restoration, such as in removing the source of degradation, was far more effective than human-directed planting efforts. Active restoration often results in very low success rates and high costs, but the natural restoration of Posidonia oceanica within the Gulf of Marseille demonstrates that once water clarity and sediment quality are restored, the species has considerable resilience.
How do seagrass support the Mediterranean climate?
The ‘lungs of the Mediterranean’ are extremely important in providing essential services of shoreline protection and carbon storage. The European Environment Agency has considered the recovery of these meadows as important for achieving ‘Good Environmental Status’ (GES) under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, particularly along the coast of France. Seagrass recovery near Marseille is an important contributor to regional biodiversity, providing habitat for hundreds of different marine species.
How EU directives protect Marseille’s marine life
The current health of the seagrass is strongly linked to compliance with the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, as confirmed by regular monitoring carried out by the French Water Agency (Agence de l’Eau). Regular sampling of coastal waters near Marseille indicates a reduction in levels of heavy metals and nitrogen, which were previously causing algal blooms (eutrophication) that were suppressing seagrass populations.
‘Bomb making has become a cottage industry’: PM Modi attacks Mamata Banerjee, TMC at Birbhum rally. india news
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday sharply criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government and alleged that it has “turned crude bomb making into a cottage industry”.Addressing an election rally in Birbhum, West Bengal, the Prime Minister said the TMC has normalized violence in the state and promised strict action if the BJP comes to power. He said, “Today I make a promise to the people of Bengal. As soon as the BJP government is formed in Bengal, a special investigation will be conducted against those who helped in infiltration. This is my guarantee to you. No matter how powerful they are, they will be identified and sent to jail.”The Prime Minister also took a dig at TMC’s slogan, saying, “TMC’s ‘Maa-Mati-Manush’ is nothing more than empty talk.” The Prime Minister commented, “Mothers are crying, the soil has been taken over by infiltrators and the humans are scared.”Referring to Rabindranath Tagore, he said, “Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore envisioned a society where everyone would be free from fear. However, TMC’s ‘Maha Jungle Raj’ has done just the opposite.”Referring to the 2022 Birbhum violence, also known as the Bogatui massacre, he said, “What happened in Bogatui was not just an incident; it was a stain on humanity. Innocent women and children were burnt alive. If this is not jungle raj, what is it?”The PM also accused TMC of insulting the tribal communities. “What kind of mentality does TMC have that it can even insult the country’s first tribal woman President? How much arrogance is there?” he asked.Appealing to young voters, Modi said, “The youth power of Bengal is bidding farewell to this ruthless government. They will give their answer on April 23 and April 29.”The Prime Minister had earlier addressed a rally in Asansol. Voting for the 294 assembly seats of West Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29 and the counting of votes will take place on May 4.

KKR vs LSG, IPL 2026: After recent doubt, will Cameron Green finally bowl today? | cricket news
New Delhi: Focus ahead IPL The 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hinges on whether Cameron Green will return to bowling or not. During pre-match warm-up at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the all-rounder was seen bowling in the nets, raising hopes that he may resume full duties soon after missing the ball in the earlier matches.KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane made it clear that Green’s bowling is key to improving the team combination.
“When he (Green) is allowed to bowl, we will look at him, the combination will get better, so Rovman Powell will play, when Cam Green bowls we will have an extra bowler,” he said at the toss after being asked to bat first. He also confirmed changes to the lineup and said, “Just one change – Sunil (Narayan) comes in for Blessing, Varun is still recovering from his hand injury.”Talking about the batting approach, Rahane said, “As a batting unit, we just want to see the ball and react, rather than putting pressure on ourselves, trying to focus on a certain target and then trying to achieve it. I think just staying in the moment, try to react and see the ball.”The buzz around Green started after KKR’s loss to Mumbai Indians, where he did not bowl and the team struggled to defend big scores. Rahane’s previous comment, “This is the question you need to ask Cricket Australia,” added to the confusion and sparked debate about player workload and outside influence.Later, Cricket Australia clarified that no sudden ban was imposed. Green is battling a lower back problem and is slowly working his way back to bowling. His recent net session indicates progress, although it is unclear whether he will bowl against LSG today. Expectations are high for contributions from such a high-profile player, both batting and bowling.

Bitcoin in trouble: Iran’s Hormuz Haftar stirs markets
TOI correspondent from Washington: Iran moved to re-assert control over the Strait of Hormuz just hours after Israel’s continued strikes in Lebanon, straining shipping movements just 48 hours before the talks are set to begin in Islamabad. Tehran’s actions – ranging from increased inspections to completely blocking tankers – have contradicted US claims that the strait is open and safe. The White House has dismissed reports of a renewed closure by Iran as exaggerated and stressed that any attempt to block the waterway would be “completely unacceptable.” Yet on land – or rather, at sea – the situation looks much worse. But shipping companies report delays, diversions and increased scrutiny by Iranian authorities, suggesting that control over the strait is, at the very least, disputed. Physical obstruction is also not necessary; Due to fears that Iran may have mined the strait, insurance companies are not covering the ships, resulting in the ships not sailing at all. Adding to the uncertainty is a shocking report from the Financial Times that Iran intends to impose tolls payable in cryptocurrencies on ships passing through the strait. According to Iranian industry representatives, to avoid traceability under sanctions tankers must declare cargo via email, undergo appraisal, and then be paid about $1 per barrel in a digital currency such as Bitcoin – within seconds. The Iranian proposal outlines Tehran’s broader strategy: leveraging its geographical advantage during the ceasefire while testing new mechanisms to circumvent Western financial sanctions. The fact that President Trump has suggested that the US could partner with Iran in exacting such a toll, thereby legitimizing the shelling, has also worried Americans. This dispute over maritime control is just one aspect of a much larger gap between the US 15-point framework and Iran’s 10-point proposal, with differences on almost every important issue: nuclear enrichment limits, regional proxy activity, sanctions relief and control of strategic waterways. While the ceasefire has provided a temporary pause in direct hostilities, both sides appear to be using the hiatus to regroup and consolidate their positions. In fact, President Trump himself acknowledged this in a particularly aggressive message on social media, warning that U.S. military forces would stand ready to take renewed action if Iran fails to abide by the “real deal.”“If for some reason it is not [complied with],” he wrote with cowboy swagger, “Then the shootin’ starts, bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone’s ever seen before.” He said, with a mixture of courage and ambiguity, that the American army “is moving forward and resting, in fact, waiting for its next victory.”Such rhetoric has done little to reassure skeptics – neither abroad nor at home. In Washington, criticism is growing that the administration, despite inflicting significant military damage on Iran, has inadvertently given up strategic and diplomatic ground. Even within Trump’s political base, voices are emerging that question the coherence of the approach. The so-called “Taco Tuesday” satire – short for “Trump Always Chickens Out” – has gained popularity among critics who view the ceasefire as an escalation rather than a well-intentioned pause.
