Energy-saving measures Japan: Good business: Why are Tokyo workers ditching suits for shorts?

Cool Business: Why are Tokyo workers ditching suits for shorts?

The corporate world rarely loosens its grip on formal clothing, such as crisp linen shirts, sharp tailoring and neatly tailored office attire. But Tokyo’s workforce may have found a way to escape. To beat the heat and cut down on electricity use, the metropolitan government is now allowing its staff to wear shorts, as rising energy costs linked to the Middle East war add to the pressure to save electricity this summer. The decision was taken as part of the country’s “Cool Biz” program, an energy-saving campaign launched by Japan’s Environment Ministry in 2005. The campaign initially focused on encouraging light office wear, asking employees to forego formal jackets and ties during the warmer months, with some even opting for Okinawan-style collared T-shirts.The latest amendment, implemented this month, loosens the dress norms to include shorts, officials said. A Tokyo official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an anticipated energy crisis linked to the Middle East war was “one of the factors” behind the move.Images circulated by local media earlier this week showed the policy was already taking effect, with some male staff in metropolitan offices seen in T-shirts and shorts.Governor Yuriko Koike, who championed the original Cool Biz initiative during her tenure as environment minister, has thrown her full weight behind the updated measures.Addressing reporters earlier this month, he said, “We encourage ‘cool’ attire that prioritizes comfort, including polo shirts, T-shirts and sneakers and – depending on job responsibilities – shorts”, while he warned of “a serious approach to power supply and demand”.Koike also said the initiative would expand beyond clothing choice, with a greater emphasis on teleworking and earlier office hours. These measures come as Japan faces increasingly extreme heat. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded last year as the hottest year since records began in 1898. With temperatures often reaching 40 degrees Celsius or more, the agency last week introduced a formal classification for such conditions, calling them “extreme hot” or “kokusho” days.Even before Japan’s move, Thailand had introduced its own set of energy-saving measures for government workers, encouraging them to take the stairs instead of lifts, choose short-sleeved shirts instead of formal suits and work from home where possible. Offices were also instructed to keep air conditioning between 26-27 degrees Celsius, while ensuring that lights and electronic equipment were switched off when not in use.Meanwhile, the Middle East war continues to escalate, now approaching its 2-month mark. The conflict began on 28 February, when the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran.

UK couple’s dream home extension turns into “nightmare”, ends in arrests world News

UK couple's dream home extension
Rob and Lucy Davis’ dream home extension turns into “nightmare”, ending in arrests/Image: BBC

What started as a routine home extension for a UK couple later turned into a “nightmare” that left their home damaged and both of them in police custody for some time.Rob and Lucy Davies, a couple from Basildon, Essex, hired Steve Figg to build a single-storey extension, expecting the work to be completed within 12 weeks. Instead, the project dragged on for months and their home was left in a dangerous condition. Figg, 35, had already taken £44,000 but failed to complete the job. The situation worsened when he reported the couple to police, accusing them of harassment and claiming he wanted to kill them, the BBC reports. The couple were arrested at their workplaces and spent 22 hours in custody before being released. Later the police issued an apology.Describing the condition of his home, Rob Davies said: “The only way I could tell was that our house looked like a bomb site,” with parts of the property left open, including a large hole where the kitchen should have been, putting parts of the structure at risk of collapse.Incomplete work has made even daily life difficult. Rats entered through cracks in the walls and it became difficult to keep the house warm. Davis said the experience deeply affected their relationship, saying, “It was an absolute nightmare… It tested our marriage.”The couple said they spent around £75,000 in total, including £28,000 repairing the damage and additional legal costs. An investigation by Basildon Council’s building control team later found numerous breaches of regulations. Figg, who runs Figg Construction Ltd, admitted 22 breaches and was ordered to pay £85,000 in compensation. The BBC also found that Davis was not the only one affected. Other customers have also come forward with similar complaints, including claims that their homes were left structurally unsafe. In one case, a woman said Figg damaged her garden office during a dispute over payment.Reflecting on the experience, Davis said that Feig “pretends to be a guy who can do all these things, but, when you get beneath the surface, he’s incapable.”The case highlights the risks that homeowners can face when construction projects go awry and raises broader concerns about oversight in small building projects.

To whom will we apologise? If any of my mothers or sisters come into politics, I will do anything to protect them. If any of our sisters who come into politics are hurt, we will ensure that all our daughters are safe and clean.” If despite this any person creating ruckus gets hurt. When I am fighting for my daughter, if someone is hurt by my conduct, what harm do I have in apologizing to them?” ANI quoted him as saying.Yadav also alleged that politicians, officials and capitalists are “feasting on the rape of 6 to 12 year old girls”, and suggested that his previous comments should be seen in the same context. He said, “The world knows that there is nothing left after the Epstein case. All the leaders, officials and capitalists are feasting on the rape of 6-12 year old girls. Should I apologise?…I will do anything to save the honor of my daughters and sisters from politicians and not hurt them. If I have to apologize 1 billion times, I will apologise.”Questioning those who issued notices against him, he said, “Who are these people who have served me notices? Who are they with? It is also asked as to why a recommendation should not be made to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for cancellation of your membership,” it said in a statement. On the allegations and action taken against him, Yadav said, “I have also said in the House that 70-80% of the leaders watch porn. So get everyone checked. If there is porn on my phone, then get me checked too.”Alleging large-scale exploitation in politics, Pappu Yadav said, “I had said that male politicians do not allow women to enter politics without exploiting them. Is this wrong?”He further claimed that his comments were meant to highlight the issues faced by women in politics, adding that he was “fighting women’s battles.” Responding to the criticism, she said, “Why are they (Women’s Commission) upset if I talk about male politicians?”Linking her comments to the broader debate on women’s representation in politics, she said, “These politicians exploit women, and then they talk about the Women’s Reservation Bill.”

Nike will lay off 1400 people, most of the layoffs are in the technology team; COO Venkatesh Alagirisamy says in the memo: This is nothing new...

Nike has announced that it will lay off 1,400 employees across its global operations team, with the majority of the cuts coming from its technology division. The company’s move is part of its ongoing ‘Win Now’ action plan, which aims to streamline operations and position the brand for long-term profitable growth. In a memo to employees, Chief Operating Officer Venkatesh Alagirisamy stressed that the job cuts are not a new direction, but the next phase is already in the works. He also outlined four important areas to focus on:

  • Technology Modernization: Strengthening technology footprint, streamlining structures, and focusing on two centers – Philip H. Knight Campus and Nike India Technology Center.
  • Air Manufacturing Modernization: Adjustments to staffing and processes at Air MI facilities in Beaverton, St. Louis and Vietnam to improve flexibility and innovation.
  • Converse Ground Game: Moving Converse footwear manufacturing and engineering resources closer to factory partners for stronger collaboration.
  • Material supply chain integration: Positioning materials works closer to footwear and apparel supply chain teams for faster, synchronized decisions.

“These changes are about building a global operations organization that is more focused, more integrated with the business and better built for the speed of the game,” Alagirisamy wrote.

Nike layoffs: impact on employees

Nike also acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. The company said affected employees will be contacted directly by leaders and human resources partners. The company also promised to provide clear information and support during the transition. The layoffs come as Nike continues to make changes to make its operations more responsive, flexible and efficient. The company is investing in automation, upskilling and strengthening supplier relationships to simplify operations and accelerate innovation.

Team,NIKE, Inc. Our Win Now action plan is in the final stages.Across the company, we are taking deliberate steps to strengthen our foundation, sharpen the way we compete, and build a model designed to deliver long-term profitable growth. Global operations are critical to that effort.Today, I’m sharing the next phase of that work and doing so with the entire company because of the scope and importance to our collective future. In the coming months, we will continue to evolve our global operations to better serve athletes and businesses with greater speed, simplicity and accuracy. Some of that work is happening now and some will continue over time as we align our teams, capabilities and footprint to the future needs of the company. This is not a new direction. This is the next phase of work already underway.Earlier this year, I founded NIKE, Inc. We had outlined four actions to help us become a more responsive, flexible, responsible, and efficient company: optimizing our supply chain footprint, accelerating technology deployment, investing in improving our teams, and strengthening our partner and supplier relationships. The changes we are making now are based on that work.At its core, these changes are about building a global operations organization that is more focused, more integrated with the business, and better built for the speed of the game.In the coming weeks, several significant changes to global operations will take effect. These actions will result in changes to certain team structures, work locations, and headcount.

  • Technology modernization. We’re reshaping our technology team to align with the business, build better teams, and accelerate what matters most. This means strengthening our technology footprint, streamlining our structure to move forward with greater speed and focus, and doubling down on where our work is done by focusing on two strategically important centers – the Philip H. Knight Campus and our Nike India Technology Center. These are intentional steps taken to create a streamlined, faster, more connected technology organization – built for the consumer, the athlete, and the business.
  • Air Manufacturing Modernization. We’re modernizing how work gets done at our Air Manufacturing Innovation (Air MI) facilities in Beaverton, Oregon; St. Louis; and Vietnam by increasing flexibility, streamlining processes and adjusting staffing to suit business needs. These changes will help us remain flexible with changes in demand, accelerate future innovations, and continue to provide the product quality athletes have come to expect from Nike.
  • Converse Ground Game. We are moving some Converse footwear manufacturing and engineering resources closer to our factory partners to enable stronger real-time collaboration and better support the brand’s needs going forward.
  • Material supply chain integration. We are bringing content closer to our footwear and apparel supply chain teams while continuing to build on the valuable capabilities we already have. It strengthens how we work from raw material to finished product, enabling faster, more synchronous decisions and unprecedented innovation across our best-in-class manufacturing network.

Collectively, these changes will result in the reduction of approximately 1,400 roles across global operations, the majority of which will be in technology. These cuts are extremely difficult for the teammates directly affected and also for the teams around them.Part of doing the right thing is being direct. The other part is to make sure that people are treated with care. Teammates whose roles have been impacted will hear directly from their leaders and HR partners from today, and we will work to ensure they have clear information and support during this transition.Thank you to the teammates whose roles have been impacted. Your contributions have helped build this company, and we are grateful for the work, commitment, and care you bring to Nike. For the wider team, such moments require professionalism, empathy and a shared commitment to each other. These changes are meant to make the company less complex and more responsive. As we look ahead, that means simplifying parts of how we work, using more advanced automation where it helps us do better work, and building an even stronger end-to-end foundation for future growth. I hope that these efforts will continue beyond our Win Now action plan. The operations team at NIKE, Inc. has played, is playing and will play a vital role in helping the company strengthen its foundation and will continue to play a vital role in the company’s comeback.Thank you for your leadership, your dedication to your athletes, and your dedication to each other.Venkatesh AlagirisamyEVP, Chief Operating Officer
