Case registered over social media post threatening Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's security officer

Thiruvananthapuram: A case has been registered and investigation launched over a social media post by a member of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s security team allegedly threatening him with consequences if the UDF comes to power, officials said on Sunday. According to news agency PTI, the Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police registered the case following a complaint by Sandeep Sasidharan, a member of the chief minister’s security staff. The incident was later investigated and the crime branch later gave a clean chit to both the officers. Recently, after the conclusion of the state assembly elections on April 9, several social media posts, reportedly by Congress, Youth Congress and KSU workers, claimed that revenge would be taken after the LDF government is ousted and the UDF takes power. Police said cases have been registered against Facebook accounts named Arun Rajendran, Tom Kuriakose, Yasser KP, Soni Panamthanam, Sarath Pillai, KSU Kanjiramkulam, Rahul John C and Youth Congress Battle. 14 killed, 38 injured in bomb attack in Colombia, weeks before presidential elections

14 killed, 38 injured in bomb attack in Colombia, weeks before presidential elections

At least 14 people were killed and 38 others were wounded in a highway bomb attack in southwestern Colombia on Saturday, underscoring a surge in violence just weeks before the country’s presidential election. The bomb was detonated after the attackers stopped traffic by using a bus and another vehicle to block the road.Authorities said the blast occurred in the conflict-hit Cauca department, a coca-growing region long plagued by unrest, and blamed dissident factions of the now-disintegrated FARC guerrilla group for the attack, as cited by AFP.“Those who carried out this attack… are terrorists, fascists and drug traffickers. I want our best soldiers to fight them,” President Gustavo Petro said in a post on X.The president blamed Colombia’s most wanted fugitive Ivan Mordisco for the attack, drawing parallels between him and slain drug lord Pablo Escobar.“So far, we are reporting 14 dead and more than 38 injured, including five minors,” Cauca Governor Octavio Guzman announced on Saturday night.A police source said rescue teams were continuing to search for several people reported missing. The explosion on the Pan-American Highway damaged buses and vans, overturned several vehicles, and left a large crater on the road. The bodies of the victims were lying amid the debris, covered with sheets, and emergency teams were working at the scene. As cited by the AP, the bombing is the latest in a series of attacks targeting public infrastructure, with at least 26 incidents recorded in southwestern Colombia over the past two days. These include a shooting at a police station in the rural area of Jamundi and an attack on a civil aviation radar facility in El Tambo, where authorities intercepted and defused three explosives-laden drones earlier Saturday.Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said Saturday that authorities had increased military and police deployment in affected areas.Colombia has long battled armed groups that finance their operations through drug trafficking, illegal mining and extortion and often try to influence elections through violence. Dissident factions of the FARC, which rejected the 2016 peace accord, have also been accused of attempting to derail stalled peace efforts under President Gustavo Petro.Security has emerged as a central issue ahead of the May 31 presidential election, with political violence again in the spotlight last June when conservative leader Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot in broad daylight while campaigning in the capital Bogotá.

Uber Cup: India kept its quarter-final hopes alive by registering a 3-0 win in the Uber Cup.

The Indian women’s team responded strongly after the initial defeat and registered a spectacular victory over Ukraine in their second Group A match in the Uber Cup Finals on Saturday. The win keeps India’s campaign alive ahead of the crucial final group-stage encounter.

After losing 2-3 to hosts Denmark in their first match, India needed a solid performance to stay in the competition. He performed similarly and secured an unassailable 3-0 lead by winning all three singles matches.

India dominate singles to seal tie

The charge was led by 18-year-old Unnati Hooda, who registered a straight games win over Polina Buharova. Showing composure at crucial moments, Hooda won the tough match 21-19, 22-20 in 46 minutes.

After this Tanvi Sharma had to work hard in the second singles. After winning the opening game easily, Yevgenia Kantemir pushed them into the deciding game. However, Sharma regained control in the third game and won 21-12, 17-21, 21-10 in a 49-minute battle.

Devika Sihag equalized in the third singles by defeating Maria Stolyarenko in straight games. He fought hard in the first game and won the match 23-21, 21-13 in 38 minutes.

With the tie already decided, the remaining two doubles matches became irrelevant.

What does this mean for India?

The win has put India back in a strong position after a disappointing start to their campaign. Ukraine, which also lost its opening match 0-5 to China, is now almost out of the race for a quarterfinal spot.

With only the top two teams from each group advancing, India’s qualification will now depend on their final group-stage encounter.

They face a tough test against China on Monday, a match that could decide their place in the knockout rounds.

Trump kicked out of media dinner after shooting; Supporters say another attempt to murder

TOI correspondent from Washington: US President Donald Trump was quickly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Saturday night when gunshots were heard outside the banquet hall moments before he was to deliver his speech. The US Secret Service said in a statement soon after that it was investigating the shooting near the main magnetometer screening area at the hotel, the same hotel where John Hinckley Jr. tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. It also said that a person is in custody. While some eyewitness reports stated that a suspect was shot in the melee, the Secret Service stated that “the condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,” suggesting that others may have been involved.Follow live updates: ‘Shotgun, handgun and several knives’ with him – Trump calls shooting suspect a ‘lone wolf’ The Secret Service also said that the President and First Lady are safe, as well as all other protected individuals present at the event, including Vice President J.D. Vance and several Cabinet members. The WHCA dinner is an annual roast and toast that Trump has avoided since becoming president, apparently because he believes most of the media is hostile toward him. But this year he made an exception, and instead of a well-known comedian or late-night host who would normally headline the gathering, he had to deliver the keynote address himself, with a “psychic expert” providing entertainment for the evening. Also read: Who was the shooter at Trump’s White House dinner? first image emergesBut about half an hour into the evening when dinner was about to be served, several popping sounds were heard outside the banquet hall while Trump and the first lady were seated on the stage. Secret Service agents stormed down the aisle shouting “Get down, get down”, while other agents swarmed around the President and First Lady and escorted them out. The security detail attached to various cabinet members also excluded him.About half an hour after the event, President Trump, while still at the hotel, said that he wanted the show to go on, but that he would heed the advice of law enforcement, and that if they insisted on cutting the program short, he would like to do it again. In fact, after WHCA president CBS White House reporter Weijia Jiang said the event would go on, most guests remained in anticipation of Trump’s return. Trump apparently wanted to return, but security officials advised him not to do so, as he indicated in a social media post shortly thereafter. “The DC Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job one evening. They acted swiftly and bravely. The shooter has been captured, and I have recommended that we ‘let the show go on’ but be guided solely by law enforcement. They will make a decision soon. Despite that decision, the evening will be very different from planned, and we will just, frankly, have to do it all over again,” he said in a post, after which the event concluded — without dinner. Also read: Trump wanted ‘the show to go on’ after shooting at White House correspondents dinnerTrump’s message earned praise from many of his supporters, who characterized the incident as a third assassination attempt on him and praised his courage for willing to return to deliver his speech. Some supporters blamed the “radical left” for the alleged assassination attempt, while preliminary details were emerging.
