76% of UK universities report decline in Indian student numbers as international enrollments fall 31% ahead of new visa rules
The survey revealed that enrollment of Indian students has declined in 76% of UK universities.

Enrollment of Indian students at UK universities has fallen, new data shows, with stricter visa rules leading to a wider decline in international postgraduate admissions.A survey by British Universities International Liaison Association found that 70% of UK universities reported fewer international students joining courses in January 2026, with total enrollments down 31% compared to the same period last year. The decline is also reflected in Indian students, with 76% of universities reporting lower enrollments from India. Similar patterns were seen across South Asia, where 82% of universities reported a decline in student numbers from Pakistan, where numbers fell by an average of 75%, while 65% reported a decline from Bangladesh. These markets are seen as higher risk under the evolving visa framework. The findings show that universities are already adjusting their recruitment strategies ahead of strict compliance measures. Nearly a third of institutions have restricted recruitment in certain countries, while 58% have strengthened credibility checks or interview limits. In a similar proportion higher deposits or stricter financial requirements have been introduced to reduce the risk of visa refusal.According to BUILA’s press release, from June, the UK government will introduce a traffic light system to assess universities’ compliance with visa rules. Institutions must keep visa denial rates below 4% to maintain a “green” rating. Those placed in the “amber” category will not be allowed to increase their international student numbers, raising concerns about future growth and competitiveness. Nearly half of the universities surveyed are expected to receive at least one non-green rating under the new system.Despite stringent internal controls, universities report continuing challenges in visa processing. Nearly 60% said they had seen higher than usual UK visa and immigration refusal rates during the January entry period. Additionally, 41% flagged delays and issues with interview scheduling, while more than a third raised concerns about inconsistent or unclear reasons for rejection, even if applicants meet expected standards. The sector has warned that these trends could discourage genuine students and affect the UK’s global position in higher education. Andrew Bird, president of BUILA, said: “The UK already operates one of the toughest student visa compliance regimes in the world, and our members fully support protecting its integrity. But the government keeps changing the goalposts.”He said: “If introduced as currently proposed, the new system risks significant reputational damage to our world-leading higher education sector. It could deter genuine students from applying.”BUILA has urged the government to refine the proposed system, including using “amber” ratings as a warning rather than a trigger for sanctions, and to improve transparency in visa decisions with clearer reasons for refusal and better early-warning signals for universities.

From wards to homes: where India's maternal care has fallen apart

Access to maternal care in India has certainly expanded over the past decade, even as mothers’ experiences during pregnancy and delivery after coming out of the delivery room remain uneven. The outcome for a mother in the weeks and months following delivery is breastfeeding struggles, poor follow-up after delivery and limited mental health support. At the Times Future of Maternity 2026, organized by Times Internet and Pregatips, practitioners and experts gathered to discuss a part of the maternity care ecosystem in India that often does not get much attention – what happens before birth, and more importantly, after birth.Beginning with a discussion on how to strengthen antenatal, postnatal, breastfeeding and mental support systems, the focus turned to breastfeeding, an area where India continues to see gaps despite clear global guidelines. Exclusive breastfeeding rates still vary widely across regions. Dr Deepti Arora, founding member of Everbliss Maternity and Family Wellbeing Leader, pointed to a pattern she sees again and again in practice. “Breastfeeding fails not because a mother doesn’t know how to do it, but because the guidance is so lacking that she feels like I don’t know how to do this simple thing.”Known challenges in the early days include pain due to incorrect latch, concerns about low milk supply, delayed weaning, and being emotionally overwhelmed. However, what stood out in Dr Arora’s comments was the lack of timely support and preparation rather than a lack of awareness. She stressed the need for early and sustained guidance rather than reactive intervention, saying, “Breastfeeding does not fail, but the system fails.”That idea of continuity came up again when the discussion turned to postpartum recovery. Dr Helai Gupta, senior consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Rosewalk Hospital, argued that the healthcare system often treats delivery as the end point rather than the beginning of a long recovery phase. “Postpartum care is the least medicalized stage in a woman’s life cycle,” she said. The adverse effects of that mentality are visible. Many aspects related to recovery do not receive much attention from medical teams, while the focus remains on delivery and discharge-related protocols. For example, sleep, hydration, mobility and mental health are areas that have been overlooked. Highlighting how even basic practices can have unintended consequences, Dr Gupta said limited water intake after delivery in some communities leads to dehydration, which impacts recovery and breastfeeding.Mental health, in particular, remains a weak link in the continuum of care. According to Dr Juhi Rachel Baluja, consultant psychiatrist at St Stephen’s Hospital, awareness about mental health has improved but the burden still remains, with anxiety disorders being the major areas of concern recorded during pregnancy and even after delivery. “In about 15-20% of cases… there will be some kind of underlying concern,” Dr. Baluja said, adding that such concerns are not limited to first-time mothers. In more severe cases, symptoms may develop into depression or psychosis and go unnoticed until they become severe. According to Dr. Baluja, many women are unable to see these changes, which basically makes the role of families important. Some early signs that need immediate attention are low self-confidence, inability to take care of the baby, and sadness.During the panel discussion around preparedness, the conversation then turned to prenatal education, which experts say is underutilized. Dr Rashmi Bawa, founder director of WellMom, a wellness platform for expectant mothers, described structured antenatal sessions as a low-cost, high-impact intervention. He said, “Structured prenatal education…is the lowest investment but highest yielding resource we have.”According to Dr. Bawa, when the available information is not deemed reliable enough, prenatal sessions help families understand what to expect and how to respond. Additionally, a shared space where parents-to-be can talk and learn from each other can help reduce anxiety and gain confidence before delivery. Time is also important here. For example, according to Dr. Arora, it is too late to provide guidance about breastfeeding after delivery, as the mother is already experiencing emotional stress while she is physically recovering. Therefore, preparation during pregnancy helps moms know what is normal and what is not, and react accordingly instead of panicking. This idea of continuity of care extends to how postpartum support systems are structured. According to Dr. Gupta, while current public health programs track mothers for six weeks after delivery, follow-up should be extended further. Digital tools, periodic check-ins, and structured screening can help identify early risk and boost outcomes in the long term.At the same time, experts said that the systems themselves are not enough, as what remains central, especially in the Indian context, is the role of the family. As Dr. Arora said, “If the mother is supported, breast milk flows; if she is doubted, it slows down.”Yet, current support structures focus more on the newborn, often ignoring the needs of the mother and the entire family. Dr. Bawa said that while postpartum care needs to move toward a more “parent-centered” approach, in many families it remains baby-centered. Furthermore, communication gaps between partners, lack of practical support, and societal expectations regarding care can increase stress during this stage.Experts also discussed the importance of involving extended family members in care planning. This is because older family members often have a say in decisions related to nutrition, health benefits and child care. Therefore, involving them in the process can help boost compliance and results.Throughout the panel, a theme of conversation was that maternal care spans preparation, delivery, recovery and adaptation to a new stage of life, rather than starting at delivery and ending at discharge. Therefore, coordination between healthcare providers, communities and families in addition to clinical protocols is important to strengthen antenatal, postnatal, breastfeeding and mental health structures. Why? Because for many women the most important time of care begins after childbirth.

Weight Loss Tips: 6 Best Practical Weight Loss Motivation Tips That Actually Work

6 Best Practical Weight Loss Motivation Tips That Actually Work
Weight loss and persistent fatigue represent two common symptoms that people usually dismiss as normal aging or stress. People usually associate weight loss with dieting or stress, but unexplained weight loss can indicate a potentially serious medical condition, such as lung cancer. This happens because the body needs extra energy to fight cancer, which can lead to drastic weight loss. On the other hand, cancer cells within the body deplete the energy levels of patients, making it difficult to perform daily tasks. Due to the non-specific nature of these symptoms, people usually dismiss them as normal aging or lifestyle fatigue, thereby delaying cancer diagnosis.

There’s no denying that losing weight is one of the most challenging things in life, but do you know what’s even more challenging than losing weight? Well, it’s about hustling every day and staying motivated to achieve your goals. While the internet is full of fitness experts and inspiration, do they always work? Put it somewhere you can see it every day, like on a sticky note on your mirror or on your phone’s lock screen. Read this when you feel like eating something you shouldn’t. If your goal is just to “fit in” for no reason, it will be hard to continue. If you have a personal reason, it will be easier to stay motivated.

Tips for Maintaining Weight Loss After Transitioning from Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is one of the most popular and proven strategies for losing weight, dividing your day cycle between fasting and eating windows. While there are people who follow such eating patterns as a preferred diet option, the most common option remains to follow a fasting style until you reach your weight loss goal. However, it is also a well-established fact that maintaining weight loss once you get back into regular eating habits is hard to achieve, and things can get unbalanced if you do not follow diet discipline. In fact, some people find maintaining weight loss and establishing a routine more difficult than the actual weight loss process. So, if you have successfully lost weight after following intermittent fasting, here are some tips to actually lose weight and adopt an easier lifestyle: Also Read: According to studies, intermittent fasting is the best window for weight loss.

Win small wins and set rewardsAlways plan for small wins instead of trying to do too much at once. For example, instead of saying “I want to lose 20 pounds by summer” say “I will walk for 20 minutes every day” or “I will drink water instead of soda for three days.” If you can do these things you will feel good about yourself, and you will want to move forward. Big goals can be overwhelming. Small wins can make you feel like you can do anything.track every stepKeep track of your achievements and cherish them! Get a magazine or an app. Write down what you eat, how you exercise, and how you feel. It’s great to see that you have made progress. Like if you have lost 2 kg in three weeks and you have energy. There are no numbers. It’s nice to look at your photos or measure your progress to remind yourself that you’re doing well.keep your friends aroundTell your friends or family what you are trying to do. They can lift your spirits and make it more fun. You can also join groups where people share recipes and talk about their struggles. It’s good to have people who understand what you’re going through. It can make you feel more accountable. When you have people supporting you, it’s easier to say “I did this today” or “Maybe tomorrow.”

tfliygou

reward effortIf you have been doing well for some time, treat yourself. Like buying shoes after working out ten times or enjoying a movie night after eating healthy for a week. Don’t reward yourself with food as this can make it harder to lose weight. It’s good to give yourself a gift from time to time as it can make you feel happy and motivated.talk to yourselfImagine what you will be like when you lose weight. Like if you can run with your kids or feel confident in your clothes. Say it out loud. “I’m getting stronger every day.” Don’t say anything about yourself as this can make it difficult to stay motivated. Instead say things and remind yourself that you can do this. You can also read about people who have lost weight and succeeded and this can inspire you to keep going.Give it a try and let us know your progress!

Indian man living in US on student visa convicted of defrauding elderly man by posing as federal employee

छात्र वीजा पर अमेरिका में रह रहे भारतीय व्यक्ति को संघीय कर्मचारी बनकर बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति से धोखाधड़ी करने का दोषी ठहराया गया

An Indian man living in the US on a student visa has been convicted of a major scam targeting elderly people.

Venkateswara Chagamreddy, a 27-year-old Indian man living in Texas on a student visa, has been convicted in Delaware County of defrauding a 79-year-old Vietnam veteran. In August 2025, the elderly man called a phone number he believed was Microsoft support. He was told that criminal activity had been detected on his computer and that a federal official would contact him to provide further advice.Another person called him, posing as a federal officer, and gave him the wrong badge number. The fake federal officer told the victim that his identity had been stolen and provided to criminals, resulting in him being “investigated” and his identity used to commit a federal crime. The victim was told that his money should be transferred to gold and deposited in the Treasury Department. The victim complied and handed over a large amount of gold to the fake officer. When the victim was contacted again for more money, he reached out to a family member who told him that he was being defrauded and that no government department would ask for gold from any individual. This time, Chagamareddy came to collect the package and was arrested. Evidence presented to the jury revealed that he had $500 in cash, a cell phone, and 23 ounces of gold in the vehicle.

Who is Venkateswara Chagamareddy? What is his gold scam?

While a big gold scam racket has already come under the radar of law enforcement, investigators said Chagamreddy was working with another co-conspirator. He was a courier man as he traveled across the states to pick up packages from victims. For example, when he was arrested, his messages proved that he had been in contact with several elderly victims. He even flew from Austin to North Carolina where he picked up the gold and then handed it over to a co-conspirator.On his trips, he would provide status updates, location, fuel levels to the co-conspirator.When he was arrested, Chagamreddy told law enforcement that he was in the United States on a student visa and was at risk of deportation after being suspended from school. He said that he had recently gone out of the state to join a different college and when he returned, the gold was in his vehicle.

Beijing-Delhi flights resume as China, India expand air connectivity amid growing ties

Direct air connectivity between India and China is set to improve further as Air China restarted its Beijing-Delhi service from Tuesday, the second route to India to be restored by the Chinese carrier this month. The service will operate three times a week – on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays – using Airbus A330 aircraft. Economy class fares are expected to start from 3,570 yuan (about US$523), with departure from Beijing at 3:15 pm and arrival in Delhi at 8:20 pm local time.

Second route restarted this month

The move follows the recent resumption of flights by China Eastern Airlines, which had resumed its direct service between Kunming and Kolkata on April 18. The Kunming–Kolkata route operates six weekly round-trip flights using Boeing 737 aircraft. China Eastern Airlines had earlier restarted the Shanghai-Delhi route in November 2025.Indian airline IndiGo is also expanding its presence in China. On March 30, IndiGo launched its daily non-stop service between Kolkata and Shanghai using its A320neo aircraft. Earlier, IndiGo had resumed flights on the Kolkata-Guangzhou route and launched the Delhi-Guangzhou route on November 10, 2025. According to operational data for April, IndiGo maintained passenger load factor between 68 per cent and 85 per cent on several China-India routes, with popular routes such as Delhi-Guangzhou and Kolkata-Guangzhou showing particularly strong performance.

sweetness in relationships

Air connectivity has expanded amid signs of warming relations between India and China. Last month, India approved easing of restrictions on Chinese investment in selected sectors including electronics, capital goods and solar cells, marking a resumption of economic ties after six years of friction.Earlier in March, the Union Cabinet had approved changes to the FDI policy guidelines on investment from countries sharing land borders with India, including China, providing a fixed timeline for approval in critical sectors.

expert opinion

Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute of Tsinghua University, told the Global Times that more airlines from both sides increasing their services has positive significance for further strengthening the momentum of bilateral relations.“This trend not only facilitates personnel exchange between the two countries, but also represents more practical measures to reduce supply chain costs and support travel for technology companies and the manufacturing sector,” Qian said.

Congressman Riley: Big Tech likes this system: Congressman Riley writes to DHS to end OPT; Claims 450,000 jobs were ‘stolen’ from Americans

Congressman Riley Moore urged DHS to end the OPT, STEM OPT Extension, and CPT programs.

GOP Congressman Riley M. Moore has written to new DHS Secretary Markway Mullin to eliminate the OPT, STEM-OPT and CPT programs to save jobs for American graduates. He is not the first person to raise the demand amid the ongoing H-1B controversy, but he detailed how these programs allowing foreign students to enter the workforce make a mockery of Congress’s original intent. The Congressman said, “At a time when new graduates are entering one of the most challenging job markets in recent history, it is troubling that corporations and universities continue to exploit nonimmigrant worker programs that replace American workers with foreign workers.”“For years, Big Tech lobbyists have quietly worked with the previous administration to turn ‘practical training’ programs into a backdoor pipeline for cheap foreign labor. They also urge DHS to secretly rewrite the OPT rules to avoid the H-1B cap intentionally imposed by Congress. “This regulatory trickery not only makes a mockery of Congress’s clear intent for the student visa program, but gives powerful corporations exactly what they want: an unlimited supply of low-wage, tax-advantaged workers to displace America’s own talent,” Riley wrote.

What are OPT, OPT Extension and CPT?

OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a temporary work authorization for F-1 students in the US that allows students to work in a job related to their studies for practical experience. Its validity is 12 months.STEM students get a 24-month extension on their one-year OPT.CPT (Curriculum Practical Training) is work authorization that is part of an academic program. Unlike OPT, it can be done only during the course. It is university approved and many people choose it when they get status in the US.Riley Moore said these programs are a good deal for foreign students to get practical training but over time they have become a bridge between temporary student visas and long-term H-1B status.Describing how the programs evolved, Moore said, “Since 1947, government programs have existed to provide opportunities for foreign students to gain experience, such as brief internships. But in 1992, the Bush administration quietly transformed those programs into the modern OPT, allowing foreigners to live and work in the US for a full year.”“By 2007, the H-1B visa limit was limiting Microsoft’s access to cheap foreign labor. At a dinner party in 2007, a Microsoft lobbyist proposed to DHS Secretary Chertoff that the H-1B problem could be solved by extending the OPT period. It worked. The 2008 Chertoff rule extended STEM OPTs to 17 months without any public notice or congressional approval. Nearly Eight years later, the Obama administration extended the OPT again, bringing the total period of stay in the US after graduation to 36 months,” he said, adding that about 450,000 foreigners hold jobs that should be held by Americans. He said, “Big Tech loves this system. Foreigners accept low wages. They can’t hold down jobs or ask for promotions. And almost every one of them is exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes, saving billions.”
