Cooch Behar workers’ ‘vote first, work later’ mantra hits Jaipur restaurants, homes and businesses. india news

Jaipur: With just a fortnight left for the elections in Bengal, there is a severe shortage of staff in homes and eateries across Jaipur as migrant workers from Cooch Behar return home to cast their votes, leading to kitchen shortages and problems for businesses. As nine constituencies in Cooch Behar go to the polls on April 23, a large section of Bengali domestic workers and daily wage earners in Jaipur are pushing back, asking employers to “vote first, work later”. The migration has disrupted regular services at homes, hotels, restaurants and construction sites.“More than 80% of Jaipur’s domestic servants and laborers are from villages in Cooch Behar. This is the first time we are seeing so much enthusiasm to return home to cast their votes.” In fact, the enthusiasm is the highest post-Covid,” said Mewa Bharti, a domestic help worker who runs Rajasthan Mahila Kamaraj Union. The impact is widespread. Women largely work as domestic helps, while men are employed in hotels, marriage gardens, factories and construction work.“We cannot think of running kitchens in Jaipur without Cooch Behar manpower. At present, there is an acute shortage as almost entire families are going to vote,” said Tarun Kumar Bansal, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Rajasthan. He said that out of his 240 employees, more than 70 are from Cooch Behar and all have applied for leave. Its impact has spread to the markets, the Bengali fish market at Bais Godam and the Bengali grain market at Shakar Marg are likely to remain closed for about a month.Explaining the increase, migrant Usha Barman said: “We have been promised financial help by political parties depending on the number of family members who vote. There is also a fear that if we do not vote, our names may be struck off in the next amendment.”With trains full and waiting lists long, many are opting for ordinary coaches or private buses – underscoring that, for these workers, voting takes priority over livelihood.

‘Mahatma Gandhi is on fire brother’. india news

'Mahatma Gandhi is on fire brother'

New Delhi: “Mahatma Gandhi is on fire brother” – a fireman’s frantic exclamation, captured on video, has become the focal point of the investigation into the fire that broke out at Justice Yashwant Verma’s official bungalow in the capital last year. At around 11.35 pm on March 14, police and fire personnel reached 30 Tughlaq Crescent (Verma’s residence) in Central Delhi. Two fire tenders were sent to the spot and they, along with police personnel, brought the fire in the store room under control within 15 minutes. This was supposed to be the end of an emergency response, but as first responders walked through the thin curtain of smoke, they were shocked – the store room contained, among other things, wads of partially burnt high denomination Indian currency notes. This comment, captured on video – a direct reference to the image of Gandhi on burnt Rs 500 notes – turned an emergency call into a scandal that reached the highest levels of the judiciary, besides leading to a young officer – who quickly realized the gravity of what happened to his men and alerted his superiors – being labeled a “whistleblower”, simply because he showed his presence of mind. By the afternoon of March 15, when Justice Verma was returning to the capital midway from his visit to the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora was already briefing Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay about the incident. A formal report supported by WhatsApp video of the cash-laden wreck was sent to the Union Home Ministry.

A joint NASA-US military recovery team supported by USS John P Murtha retrieved the crew for medical examination. The successful landing is a key step in NASA’s renewed lunar program, with Trump’s comments adding to the political spotlight on the agency’s long-term ambitions to expand human missions beyond the Moon to Mars.

Verma walks down in protest: ‘Asked to give mandatory answer’ india news

Verma walks down in protest: 'Asked to give mandatory answer'

New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court has probably submitted his resignation to the President. Draupadi Murmu on Friday, but he went down screaming. In a letter addressed to Supreme Court Justice Arvind Kumar, who heads the judges’ inquiry committee, the controversial HC judge faulted the committee’s process to test the veracity of allegations related to the discovery of huge amounts of unaccounted burnt cash from his official residence. Questioning the committee’s decision to proceed without any concrete evidence against him, Justice Verma said such a process left him no option but to withdraw, as his further participation would legitimize a process that “asks me to give unassailable answers – where did the money come from”. “Parallel to this, I have also written a letter to Her Excellency the President of India,” he said. The video, recorded by the first responders – firemen and police – of the fire incident at his residence in central Delhi on the night of March 14-15 last year and later uploaded on the Supreme Court website, proved Justice Verma’s murder. If his evidence before the committee was damning, it became even more trenchant during his cross-examination by Justice Verma’s lawyers, as they sketched the discovery of the cash and the conduct of the people present in the judge’s house that night. Justice Verma was considered very close to Justice DY Chandrachud, who had a two-year tenure as CJI from November 2022 to November 2024. An SC bench headed by him had in March 2024 quashed a CBI FIR and an ECIR by the Enforcement Directorate against Justice Verma, who, as a lawyer and before his appointment as an HC judge, had come forward as a non-executive director of Simbhaoli Sugar Limited in an alleged bank loan fraud case. One of his main complaints was that the committee had put the onus of proving his innocence on the basis of evidence collected by the inquiry committee constituted by the then CJI Sanjiv Khanna. He said the investigation report could not serve as evidence or be relevant to any future proceedings. His decision to challenge the inquiry proceedings, its report and the then CJI Khanna’s recommendation of removal motion was quashed by the SC bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih on August 7 last year. Justice Verma said that the storeroom from where the burnt cash was allegedly found and where the video was recorded was never seized by the police. Moreover, since the room was accessible to all, it could not be the responsibility of the judge to keep track of who kept what in the vast complex of the official bungalow, which also included residential quarters for domestic help. Justice Verma said that he left it for the coming generation to decide “whether such an obligation can ever be discharged or can fairly be imposed on the occupants of such premises”. He said that there is no basis or evidence in the allegations and allegations made against him. Saying there was no concrete evidence to prove the charges against him, Justice Verma said the criminal trial would be conducted in a process undisclosed by law. “The burden of proof has effectively been reversed without making any substantive case.” Justice Verma said, “I am extremely disappointed that despite the serious nature of these proceedings, which could have the potential consequence of removing a sitting judge of a High Court from constitutional office, the Commission (Committee) did not intervene despite the shocking manner of the proceedings.”

IPL Play of the Day, RR vs RCB: Dhruv Jurel faces Vaibhav Suryavanshi attack

Be it commentators or common spectators, it was natural to assume that Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s breathtaking strike against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Guwahati had completely turned the game in favor of Rajasthan Royals. The young batsman’s fearless strokeplay started the chase and it looked like it would slip away from RCB in just a few overs.

But amid the fireworks, another innings was quietly shaping the outcome. Dhruv Jurel’s calmness, awareness and control under pressure proved equally decisive and assured Rajasthan Royals are on the way to their fourth consecutive win And maintain your unbeaten streak.

IPL 2026, RR vs RCB: Achievement: | highlight

There is probably a reason for that nature. Jurel comes from a family with deep ties to the Indian Army, his father being a veteran of the Kargil War. And on a night when the chase threatened to escalate, that discipline and restraint were on full display.

Suryavanshi’s aggressive pace undoubtedly put RCB on the backfoot. Their attack forced the bowlers into defensive zones and reactive plans. However, once his innings ended, the game suddenly reopened.

Krunal Pandya struck twice in succession, first removing Suryavanshi and then dismissing Shimron Hetmyer, who was moved up the order in an attempt to accelerate his finishing. Hetmyer’s dismissal by a well-directed short ball brought the momentum back to RCB. The pressure started to build with Josh Hazlewood also finding his rhythm.

The situation became even more tense when Riyan Parag fell, leaving Rajasthan still with work to do and only a few recognized batsmen left. From a position of dominance, the Royals suddenly felt that restraint was needed more than aggression.

This is where Jurrell stood out.

Like a soldier under constant fire, Jurel endured the pressure without allowing the situation to overwhelm him. He did not hold back nor was he swayed by the urgency of the occasion. Instead, he struck the right balance between caution and intention.

Jurel, along with Ravindra Jadeja, ensured that there were no further obstacles. While many wickets fell around him, he remained steady, taking the chase back to the safe zone. The partnership was built not on brute force but on clarity, communication and smart decision making.

Behind the chaos is Jurel’s calm control

The most underrated aspect of Jurel’s innings was how he kept Rajasthan ahead even during the match Explosive phase of Suryavanshi. While the spotlight was firmly on the latter, Jurel was a far from passive presence at the other end.

Unlike earlier instances this season, where partners had taken a back seat, Jurel matched the pace. He attacked when opportunities presented themselves and ensured that the pressure never fell entirely on the chasing side. His innings of 27 off just 10 balls in the powerplay was a statement of intent, showing that he was not just playing the second innings.

By the time Jadeja came in, Jurel had already laid a strong foundation by scoring 40 runs in 18 balls. From there, he adjusted his approach to suit the match situation. The next phase of his innings was not one of dominance but of control.

It took him a few balls to reach his half-century, but that slowness was a reflection of awareness rather than hesitation. As wickets fell at the other end, Jurel prioritized consistency without completely shutting down scoring opportunities. He continued to hit boundaries at crucial moments, ensuring that the chase never got into a risky phase.

Jadeja, on the other hand, played an excellent supporting role. Known for his ability to hold one end and rotate the strike, he complemented Jurel’s vision effortlessly. The left-hander did not need to increase the pace, allowing Jurel to dictate terms when necessary while maintaining overall balance.

With that determination, Jurel calmly took charge of the chase like a field commander executing a plan to perfection. There was no panic, no unnecessary risks, just a clear understanding of what was needed to get the job done.

In the end, while Suryavanshi’s innings provided the spark, it was Jurel’s composure under pressure that ensured the job was finished. In a contest swinging between chaos and control, it was his calm, almost battle-hardened approach that made the difference and took Rajasthan Royals home safely once again.
