Iran drone attack on US embassy in Saudi Arabia hits CIA station: Report

An Iranian drone attack on the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia last month caused far more damage than officials in the kingdom had previously anticipated and dealt a major blow. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) facility within the complex, according to a latest report by The Wall Street Journal citing current and former US officials. The attack occurred in Riyadh on March 3, when a drone breached the air defenses protecting the Saudi capital’s diplomatic quarter and struck the US compound. Officials said a second drone arrived shortly afterward, flew into the crack created by the first drone, and exploded.

The attacks took place around 1.30 am and targeted a secure part of the embassy compound. According to officials, three floors were heavily damaged and areas including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) station were affected. While Saudi officials initially described the incident as causing only minor material damage and limited fire, sources told The Wall Street Journal that the fire lasted about half a day and that parts of the embassy could not be repaired. No injuries were reported, but officials said that if the attack had occurred during working hours and been stopped in time, it could have resulted in mass casualties.Additional drones were intercepted later that night, including debris falling near a preschool. A drone is believed to have targeted the residence of the most senior US diplomat in Saudi Arabia.Bernard Hudson, former CIA counterterrorism chief, said, “It was able to produce a weapon indigenously, fire it hundreds of miles, and put it into the embassy of their top rival, which meant they could hit whoever they wanted in the city.”“The true extent of the damage caused at these locations has been completely highlighted,” he said. “This raises suspicions that much damage may actually have been caused.”The incident is part of a broader escalation in which Iran and allied groups have targeted US diplomatic and military sites across the region. Embassies and consulates in Baghdad, Dubai, Kuwait City, Riyadh and Erbil have faced missile or drone attacks, although none resulted in American deaths. The US State Department said it did not disclose specific security measures but confirmed it was monitoring threats in Saudi Arabia and advised citizens to avoid places associated with Americans. The broader conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, has now entered its second month, raising tensions across the Middle East and raising concerns of broader regional escalation. The confrontation began with joint US-Israeli attacks on Iranian military and security infrastructure, after which Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on US targets in the Gulf and other regional bases, leading to sustained exchanges between the two sides. Not just Riyadh, US embassies and consulates in Baghdad and Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan have also been targeted, with attacks reported near US diplomatic facilities amid the ongoing conflict. According to multiple reports, similar threats and attack attempts have spread across the Gulf, including in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Beyond 'men vs. women': Knee replacement focuses on patient needs

BENGALURU: As the debate over gender differences in knee replacement surgeries moves from implant design to patient experience, doctors say expectations from surgery remain largely the same for men and women. The change in perspective was discussed at the Bangalore Orthopedic Society’s 29th annual conference, BOSCON 2026, held on Saturday, where physicians highlighted that outcomes are influenced less by gender and more by when and how patients access care.“The basic question is simple – what does any patient want from a knee replacement?” said Dr Pratima Khincha, consultant orthopedic surgeon at Khincha Orthopedic Centre. “Relief from pain, the ability to walk independently, climb stairs, return to work, and ultimately improve quality of life with as little medication as possible.” These expectations, he said, are universal. However, data shows that women often arrive later for surgery than men, typically with more advanced disease and greater disability. “By the time they come to us, their condition is often more advanced, and this is reflected in the results as well,” Dr. Khincha said. One of the main reasons for this is the decision making process. Many women are not the primary decision makers when it comes to surgery. “When patients are not the primary decision makers, it can impact their motivation and recovery. The ideal patient is one who chooses surgery for himself,” he said.Differences in perception also emerge. Doctors note that women are more apprehensive about post-operative pain, while men often focus on regaining pre-surgery activity levels. However, both share concerns about the risks and existing health conditions. On implant design, Dr Srishti Patil, consultant orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon at Sparsh Hospital, said gender alone should not dictate the choices. “Every knee is different—not just women’s knees,” he said. While anatomic differences exist — including issues like femoral overextension and anterior overextension that are commonly seen in women — he said the variability is wide across all patients. “Although gender-specific designs attempted to address this, these changes have not translated into meaningful clinical benefits,” he said.“We don’t fail because of gender. We fail because we ignore morphology,” said Dr. Chandrashekhar C, senior joint replacement surgeon at DHEE Hospital, adding that anatomical differences were oversimplified in earlier implant designs. He said the field is moving toward a phenotype-based approach, where treatment is tailored to each patient’s anatomy. “It’s no longer about male versus female transplants. It’s about understanding each patient’s anatomy and planning accordingly,” he said.

Steps being taken to provide Hormuz passage to Indian ships: Iran envoy

New Delhi: As conflict in West Asia disrupts narratives and navigation, Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali on Saturday told TOI that the war against his country was an illegal attack built on “illusion”. Significantly, he indicated Tehran’s continued cooperation with New Delhi, including safe passage for Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Appreciating India’s position, he said it was a “reflection of its understanding of regional complexities”.The envoy said: “At present, the strait is closed only to countries that are at war with Iran. It is natural that during the war, we will not allow our enemies to pass through our internal waters.” The fact is that other ships are not sailing in the area due to insecurity and extremely high insurance costs.”He said special measures have been implemented to ensure safe movement of ships of friendly countries, including India. These are handled operationally and on a case-by-case basis, based on real-time conditions. At the same time, he clarified that access is restricted for countries “directly or indirectly involved in aggression” against Iran. The Iranian ambassador said Tehran is “committed to freedom of navigation and maritime security”, but added: “Freedom of navigation is not possible without proper respect for the coastal state”. On the disruption, insecurity and increased risks, he said, “responsibility lies squarely with the US and Israeli regimes”, and placed their actions in “direct contradiction to the UN Charter”.

'Serious threat of radioactive contamination': Iran's Foreign Minister writes to UN on Bushehr nuclear attacks
Abbas Araghchi (Image/ANI)

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has written a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in response to the recent US-Israeli attacks targeting Tehran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant. In his letter, Araghchi wrote: “Repeated attacks by attackers in the vicinity of the active Bushehr nuclear power plant are a matter of great concern. They place the entire region at grave risk of radioactive contamination with serious human and environmental consequences.”This comes after a projectile attack near the perimeter of the Bushehr plant on Saturday, which killed a member of the site’s physical security staff and damaged a nearby building.Reports confirmed that while supporting structures were affected, there was no damage to the main plant and power generation.Araghchi stressed that the proximity of such attacks to an active nuclear facility creates an intolerable situation with the possibility of radiological releases. He stressed the need for international attention to prevent escalation around nuclear infrastructure. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, also expressed deep concern over the incident. In a statement shared on Twitter, the agency confirmed that this is the fourth attack near Bushehr in recent weeks.Grossi said, “Nuclear power plant sites and surrounding areas should never be targeted. Auxiliary buildings may contain critical safety equipment. Maximum military restraint is necessary to prevent a nuclear accident.”The IAEA confirmed no increase in radiation levels at the site and highlighted that attacks near nuclear facilities significantly increase the risk of potential accidents. The Bushehr incident is part of a series of recent attacks in the Middle East conflict. Iran, Israel and America are involved in this war that started on February 28.

After opening their account brilliantly, SRH are entering the match with confidence. They registered an impressive 65-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders and became the first team to successfully defend the score this season. Their bowlers put in a brilliant effort and bowled out KKR for 161 runs in less than 16 overs. Jaydev Unadkat took three wickets, while Ishan Malinga and Nitish Kumar Reddy took two wickets each. LSG, on the other hand, will be keen to bounce back after their disappointing performance against Delhi Capitals. Batting at home, they were never able to find any rhythm and were bowled out for 141. The total proved to be a low total as Delhi chased it down easily with the help of Sameer Rizvi’s unbeaten 70, handing LSG a six-wicket defeat. With SRH gaining momentum and LSG trying to recover from the early shock, this clash makes for an interesting battle between the two sides at different points in their campaigns.

'I only revealed what the DMK leader said': Palaniswami on Karunanidhi 'house arrest' controversy; Stalin hit back

New Delhi: AIADMK General secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday announced that if the party comes to power after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on April 23, his government will investigate the viral video in which senior DMK Leader A Raja reportedly claimed that Chief Minister and DMK supremo MK Stalin had kept his late father M Karunanidhi under “house arrest” during the last days of the DMK stalwart. Palaniswami insisted that Stalin should vent his anger on the King, not on him. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister told supporters at an election rally at Arani in Tiruvannamalai district, “Mr Stalin, don’t take your anger out on me. Take it out on your deputy general secretary and former Union minister A Raja, who released the audio which went viral. I was only reporting what Raja had said in his message. Why be angry? Show your anger on Raja, and he will tell the truth. There is no point taking it out on me.” He further claimed that Stalin’s elder brother and former Union minister MK Alagiri had earlier said that “my father is being kept as a prisoner.” Palaniswami said, “I reiterated what Raja had said. Is it appropriate to confine your own father, who made you the DMK working president, to his house in his last days? Your elder brother Alagiri had said that his father was being kept as a prisoner.” Recalling Stalin’s announcement ahead of the 2021 assembly elections to order a probe into the 2016 death of AIADMK veteran and former chief minister J Jayalalitha and her 75-day hospitalization, Palaniswami remarked, “You had said you will probe the demise of the former chief minister. Karunanidhi was also a former chief minister. The AIADMK will launch a state-led probe into Raja’s audio and take appropriate legal action. Responding to the allegations, Stalin dismissed them as “baseless and offensive” and cautioned Palaniswami to focus his criticism on the Chief Minister’s performance. He emphasized that Karunanidhi was taking rest due to age-related ailments and accused Palaniswami of “crossing all red lines”. Counting of votes for all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu is to be held on May 4.

IPL 2026, DC vs MI: Mukesh Kumar follows Hazlewood’s bowling map for T20 success

On a surface that required more patience than power at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals outclassed Mumbai Indians to clinch two spots out of two in IPL 2026.

While Sameer Rizvi scored a fluent 90 DC’s six-wicket win over MI made headlinesThe foundation for this had been laid earlier in the evening by Mukesh Kumar, who once again showed the value of discipline with the new ball and implemented a methodology that has come to define his T20 bowling.

dc vs mi, IPL 2026 highlight | Achievement:

There is a tendency to chase novelty in the format, relying on variations that can baffle batsmen ready to attack. Instead, what Mukesh is creating is a much older craft, based on the control of length and the discipline of repetition.

hazelwood t20 impression

In that sense, the reference point is clear. Josh Hazlewood has made his career on surprising batsmen rather than denying them the chance, and his IPL The 2025 season was an extension of that philosophy.

Taking 22 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.77, he led Royal Challengers Bangalore to their first title through consistent accuracy rather than fancy variations.

Mukesh, for his part, is starting to work in a similar mold, leaning on those principles and making them the center of his methodology.

Is Mukesh Kumar the most reliable fast bowler for DC after Starc? (Photo: PTI)

“Last year, we saw the way Hazlewood bowled; he consistently hit Test lengths. Our coach advised me to focus on my strengths and target that area. It is difficult to score runs on this length, especially if the ball is turning,” Mukesh said after DC’s win over MI in Delhi.

The phrase “Test length” may seem counterintuitive in the context of T20, but its importance lies in the doubt it creates. It sits in that awkward zone, neither full enough to drive nor short enough to pull with authority and, even with a hint of help on the surface, it makes mistakes rather than inviting strokes. Mukesh has returned to that area with increasing confidence.

When the season started, Mukesh Kumar was not seen as an automatic selection. The competition was hard to ignore, especially with Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi pushing his bid after an impressive domestic season.

After this Mukesh told how he won the trust of Delhi Capitals management to confirm his place in the playing eleven for the start of the season.

“There are practice matches before the IPL season. If you perform well there, the management supports you. I performed well in the practice match. So, the team has supported me. The performance is visible.”

Mukesh took a big step

And in the first two matches for Delhi Capitals, the Bihar pacer has quietly shown why he remains ahead of the pecking order based on the experience he already has in India colors across all formats.

in Lucknow, During Delhi’s opening game of the season, That intention became clear during the powerplay itself. He bowled three overs with the new ball at less than a run per ball, not through exaggerated action but through control. There was enough swing to bring the batsman forward and enough seam to keep the lead in the game. However, what was more telling was his refusal to ease the pressure. There was little width on offer, and he rarely made a mistake in length, especially against Mitchell Marsh, who was repeatedly forced to play in front of square. Luck also intervened, with a run out involving Rishabh Pant going in their favour, but the spell was composed of control rather than chance.

Then, against Mumbai Indians, the Bihar-born seamer started searching both sides of the wicket, but the improvement came quickly. The line straightened out, the length fell right out, and the batsmen’s reaction began to follow a familiar pattern. Ryan Rickelton, after being tied down, went looking for a release shot and instead edged out the fielder, guiding an errant stroke towards mid-off, where Axar Patel completed the chance.

Mukesh Kumar played a key role in DC’s victory with his 2/26 spell. (Photo: PTI)

Tilak Verma lasted only two balls. The 114.7 kph ball was no surprise in itself, but it worked because it followed a sequence that had already closed down the scoring options. The shot was checked, timing was absent and Mukesh completed an easy return catch.

His figures of 3-0-26-2 tell only part of the story. This mantra was less about taking wickets in isolation and more about shaping the phase of the innings.

“You have to read the pitch first, whether it is slow or not. You have to make your plan accordingly. Here, if you hit the pitch hard, the bounce is generally less. I focused on that and mixed it with the cutter,” he said after the game.

“My mindset is still to take wickets. That’s why I was bowling at the stumps. I was looking to attack.”

The emphasis on attacking the stumps is a natural extension of the length he is aiming for. This limits scoring areas, brings both edges into play, and forces batsmen to create options rather than reach for them. It’s a method that requires belief, especially in a format where even good balls can go missing.

Focus on India’s comeback

At 32, Mukesh is in that difficult phase of a fast bowler’s career where every spell is a statement. His India debut in all formats came during the tour of the Caribbean in 2023, but opportunities have become less frequent since then. Then again, this IPL is more than any other season. For Delhi Capitals, it is about marching towards an elusive first title; For Mukesh, it is about forcing him back into national identity.

There has been no dramatic change in his art, only refinement. Mukesh has leaned towards discipline, closing in on a test length and hitting it consistently. The method is subtle but effective, based not on flair but control, stacking dot balls, squeezing the batsmen and varying the pace inch by inch.

And there is a clear trace of Josh Hazlewood in that approach.
