Supreme Court says huge turnout in Bengal and Tamil Nadu is real sign of democracy India News

Supreme Court says heavy voting in Bengal and Tamil Nadu is real sign of democracy

New Delhi: After dealing with petitions challenging the special intensive review and deploying judicial officers to conduct an impartial investigation, the Supreme Court on Friday described the record 92 per cent turnout in the first phase of West Bengal assembly elections as a sign of the strong democratic process in the country. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi made the remarks when TMC MP and senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, a vocal opponent of SIR, said, “A good thing happened. A record 92% turnout happened because all the migrant laborers reached the state to cast their votes due to the fear that if they did not do so, their names would be struck off from the voter list.”

People should realize the power of their vote: CJI Kant

Justice Bagchi said, “Another good thing is that there was no violence during the voting except isolated incidents.” CJI Kant said, “As a citizen of India, I am very happy to see the high percentage of voting. People need to participate in voting.”Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also said the forces did a commendable job in preventing violence which resulted in high turnout. Justice Bagchi cited a Bengali proverb to describe earlier violence during state elections and said, “When kings fight, poor people suffer and die”.CJI Surya Kant said, “People should realize the power of their vote in a democracy. More than 92% people went to vote. When a large number of people go to vote, there is no violence. This shows that people realized that their power lies in the democratic system.”SG Mehta said, “92 per cent voting is historic. Barring sporadic violence, the forces have done a commendable job. We should be grateful to them. The state has a history of violence before and after the elections.”The CJI said, “This shows the fairness of the democratic process. There has been heavy voting in Tamil Nadu also.”Justice Bagchi said, “Voting in the democratic process is something that needs to be protected and respected. Otherwise, the basic essence of democracy will be lost.”Turning to senior advocate DS Naidu, representing Election CommissionJustice Bagchi said, “For the change, Naidu’s client has been appreciated by all.” This unexpected praise for the Election Commission angered Banerjee, who disagreed with it and said that the Calcutta High Court has been reprimanding the Election Commission for the last three days. Naidu protested and said that Banerjee was behaving inappropriately and unfairly. “It is Banerjee who is misusing the Election Commission in the courts,” he said.Mehta requested the bench to end the proceedings and warned that the debate would turn into a political discourse by Trinamool. The bench adjourned by asking both Naidu and Banerjee to have lunch together.

Government increased wheat procurement target by 15% as farmers turned to MSP

Government increased wheat procurement target by 15% as farmers turned to MSP

New Delhi: The government has increased the wheat procurement target to 34.5 million tonnes (MT), about 15% more than the target set for the current Rabi marketing season. This comes amid indications that more farmers may choose to sell their produce to the government at MSP as mandi prices are lower.Recently, the governments of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar sought to increase wheat procurement from the Centre. While the government usually revises the targets near the end of the procurement period, this year the decision was taken early. The government on Friday urged flour mills to buy wheat directly from the market instead of relying on Food Corporation of India (FCI) sales. The government has so far purchased 16.4 metric tonnes of wheat in the current procurement season. The all-India average mandi price of wheat on April 22 was Rs 2,572, against the MSP of Rs 2,585 per quintal. The average farmgate price in UP was Rs 2,439 per quintal and in MP it was Rs 2,416.At the release of the “Annual Wheat Survey Report 2026” prepared by the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that on the request of the state governments, in MP (7.8 MT to 10 MT), UP (1 MT to 2.5 MT), Rajasthan (2.1 MT to 2.3 MT), Bihar (18,000 MT to 1,80,000 MT) and Procurement targets have been increased. Uttarakhand (1,000 tonnes to 50,000 tonnes). The government has relaxed procurement norms for four states except Uttarakhand, where crop was damaged due to adverse weather.Chopra said he estimates wheat production to be between 110-120 metric tonnes after losses due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm in major producing states. The Flour Millers Federation has estimated wheat production at 110 metric tonnes. The agriculture ministry had earlier estimated production at 120.2 metric tonnes before adverse weather conditions. The annual survey report said there was moderate to high impact on wheat crop in nine states – Punjab, West Bengal, UP, Haryana, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra – due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm between February and April.

UP government suspends meetings to ensure full attendance in assembly session on Women's Reservation Bill

Lucknow: The state government has suspended all district and division-level meetings requiring the presence of MLAs and MLCs across the state to ensure maximum attendance of MLAs during the special session of the UP Assembly on April 30.The one-day session of the Assembly – the second of the 2026-27 financial year – has been called to discuss the recently defeated 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to extend women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from 2029.The Parliamentary Affairs Department, in a communique sent to all DMs and divisional commissioners, reiterated the 1998 government order directing officials not to organize district or divisional level meetings requiring the presence of MLAs during the ongoing session of the Assembly or Parliament. The release said that if unavoidable, the meeting can be called when there has been no meeting of Parliament or Assembly for three consecutive days.Sources said that the government order has been issued ensuring full presence of all the MLAs and Legislative Councilors. BJP The aim is to effectively centralize the message around the politically charged national issue of the Women’s Reservation Bill.BJP sources said the party sought full attendance of its MLAs to show solidarity. It is not surprising that the state government invoked a long-standing rule to avoid legislators’ distraction or conflicting local commitments. This prevents MLAs from getting caught up in constituency-level pressures and being absent or distracted from any serious debate.“Effectively, this is more about optics than governance,” said a BJP MLA. The debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill has largely created a narrative battle between the BJP and the opposition. Samajwadi Party and his colleague, Congress. This discussion is becoming quite relevant in the backdrop of high-risk UP assembly elections to be held early next year.Analysts said that even though it was a state assembly session, the issue clearly had national implications, especially in UP, where women voters are increasingly becoming decisive. This session is equally important for the opposition, which may raise questions as to why and how the bill was defeated. Sources said the SP and Congress planned to take on the ruling BJP symbolically rather than substantively on women’s issues.

FBI chief Kash Patel again under investigation for 2005 arrest while urinating in public: Report

FBI chief Kash Patel again under investigation for 2005 arrest while urinating in public: Report

FBI Director Kash Patel The criticism comes again after reports surfaced about two previous arrests for public intoxication and public urination, which are detailed in the previously mentioned legal filing.According to a report published by The Intercept, Patel acknowledged the events in a 2005 Florida Bar Disclosure Statement submitted during his early legal career. The document has received renewed attention following recent media coverage regarding alleged drinking issues. The first incident occurred in 2001 when Patel was a student at the University of Richmond. This included him being escorted out of a basketball game by campus police. He said that he was drunk at that time.“Upon exiting the arena,” he wrote, “the officer arrested me on a charge of public intoxication, as I was not yet 21 years old.”The second arrest occurred later, while he was attending Pace University Law School. Patel described going out with friends and drinking at a local bar before the incident. He wrote, “We went to some local bars and consumed some alcoholic beverages…In gross deviation from proper conduct, we attempted to relieve our bladders while walking home.” He said, “Before we could do that, a police cruiser stopped the group. Then we were arrested for urinating in public.”Patel said the incidents were out of character and asked them to be seen in the context of his overall conduct.Patel further said, “These two incidents do not represent my normal conduct.”He added, “And I hope the board will view these as an anomaly. I apologize to both the board and the community for my inappropriate behavior.”These incidents date back more than two decades and were disclosed at the same time. This revelation resurfaces amid a report by The Atlantic which detailed Patel’s alleged drinking habits. The journalist behind the original report has defended his story, saying he has received additional confirmation from high-level sources in the government. The report was written by journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick alleging that Kash Patel had shown signs of heavy drinking and erratic behavior, based on more than two dozen anonymous sources in and around the US government. The story claimed officers observed “apparent intoxication and unexplained absences” and raised concerns about his availability and performance in sensitive roles, with some sources alleging instances where he was difficult to reach or unresponsive during work periods, even missing important meetings. Patel has denied all the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated, and has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic, while the publication has maintained its reporting and said it stood by its story.
