Tagana thieves send stolen sarees back to Boyanika
A CCTV footage of Boyanika saree showroom

Bhubaneswar: It is rare for thieves to spontaneously return stolen items to their rightful owners. Employees at the government-run Boyanika Handloom Outlet in Angul district were left astonished when they discovered that several high-value sarees stolen from their store last month had resurfaced, neatly packed in parcels. A total of 25 sarees worth Rs 7.18 lakh were stolen by a group of well-dressed women who had come to the showroom on April 11 afternoon.According to the FIR lodged at Angul police station, the women examined several sarees but bought only a kurta worth Rs 1,400. Later the employees came to know that 25 sarees were missing. CCTV footage revealed that the women were hiding the sarees under their clothes before leaving.Boyanika lodged a police complaint the same night and shared the CCTV footage with police officials to identify the thieves. The video soon went viral on social media, prompting a search. However, on Saturday the Boyanika staff got a surprise. A big courier packet containing 24 of the 25 stolen sarees reached his store. “We were pleasantly surprised to get the sarees back,” said store manager Rashmi Ranjita Patnaik.Adding an unusual turn of events, one of the suspects reportedly called a Boynika employee to apologize. “The caller, a woman from Telangana, obtained our staff member’s number from the kurta purchase bill. She requested to withdraw the complaint saying that the viral video has caused embarrassment in her locality,” a staff member said.Despite compensation, the police made it clear that returning stolen goods does not end the crime. IIC, Angul police station, Prakash Chandra Majhi said, “Though they returned the sarees, legal action will be taken as per law.”

‘Protecting the British is our top priority’: Keir Starmer reacts to Hantavirus outbreak that kills three on Atlantic cruise

Starmer said, “My thoughts are with those affected by the hantavirus outbreak on board the MV Hondius. We are working closely with international partners to support British nationals on board and we are making plans for their safe onward journey.”He said the risk to the wider public is “very low” and stressed that “protecting the British people is our number one priority.”The statement came after at least three people aboard the luxury expedition ship died and several others fell seriously ill, triggering an international health response involving Dutch, South African and other authorities.According to reports, the outbreak emerged on the MV Hondius during a voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde, with the World Health Organization confirming at least one positive hantavirus case and several suspected infections still under investigation. The first victim, a 70-year-old Dutch passenger, reportedly became seriously ill during the voyage and died after the ship reached water near the island of St. Helena. His 69-year-old wife later died in a Johannesburg hospital after being medically evacuated.A third death has also been linked to the outbreak, while a 69-year-old British traveler remains in intensive care in Johannesburg. Two crew members are also receiving immediate medical attention as monitoring continues on the ship.An American travel blogger on board the ship described growing fear and uncertainty among passengers. “At the moment it feels very real and deeply uncertain,” the blogger said, adding that passengers were struggling with isolation and delays in medical evacuation as the situation unfolded at sea.Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal rodent-borne disease, usually spread by contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments. It can cause serious respiratory complications, with initial symptoms being flu-like before progressing rapidly in severe cases. The MV Hondius, carrying about 150 passengers and crew, is currently docked off Cape Verde after authorities have not allowed it to dock due to public health concerns.

‘Making myself a laughing stock’: BJP criticizes Mamata Banerjee for refusing to resign after West Bengal election defeat. india news

'Making myself a laughing stock': BJP criticizes Mamata Banerjee for refusing to resign after West Bengal election defeat

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has questioned Mamata Banerjee’s “will not resign” comment, saying she is free to approach the Supreme Court in case of any irregularity, as alleged by the outgoing West Bengal CM. After the saffron party’s victory in the Bengal elections, Banerjee accused the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP and refused to accept the decision.”She is only making herself a laughing stock,” he said, adding that she is free to approach the Supreme Court on the election results,” state BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said.Questioning the legality of such remarks, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said it was an attack on “democracy and the Constitution”.He said, “It is worrying because in India’s democracy, there is a beauty in the fact that since independence such a situation has never arisen where two parties are at loggerheads with each other like this. Very respectfully, with dignity, when a Chief Minister or a Prime Minister loses, the losing party resigns, and the transfer of power in India in the last 75 years has always happened in a peaceful manner.”“But today, what Mamata Banerjee has said and done, I must say with regret, has hurt this tradition of India. This is not an attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party; this is an attack on democracy. This is an attack on the Constitution of India, the Constitution of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. However, Mamata Banerjee is saying that she is not defeated and will not resign. This reflects the spirit of authority and anarchy. This is a story of anarchy and authority.” Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata from Bhawanipur, also reacted to her statement, saying, “Everything is mentioned in the Constitution. I don’t need to say much.”Mamata Banerjee has refused to accept the verdict of Bengal elections, where TMC suffered a defeat at the hands of BJP, with the saffron party winning 207 seats. She said she would not resign because her party “did not lose the election”, but it was an attempt by the BJP and the Election Commission to “defeat us”.“I will not resign, I did not lose, I will not go to Raj Bhavan…the question does not arise. No. Now, I also want to say that we did not lose the elections. This is their attempt to defeat us. Officially, through the Election Commission, they may defeat us, but morally we won the elections.” Mamata Banerjee said while addressing a press conference in Kolkata.

CSK, on the other hand, brought in Akeal Hosein and Gurjapneet Singh to make changes to their combination due to injury to Ramakrishna Ghosh.“We will bat first. I think the surface looks good, and we think it is a very good pitch. Maybe it might be a little slower in the second innings, so I would like to give our bowlers the advantage. The way the tournament is going, it is a very important match. But at the same time, it is more important to focus on how you are playing. You can’t think too much about points – if you do, you put extra pressure on yourself. That’s what we are discussing as a team, we just want to play good cricket and the points will decide themselves. We have lost some close matches, but if you look at the season overall, I am happy with the wins and performances. This happens sometimes, but if we talk about cricket, I am very happy with the boys’ batting and bowling. If we had performed better in fielding, we would have been in a stronger position. One change – Lungi Ngidi in place of Kyle Jamieson,” Axar Patel said at the toss.CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said, “We wanted to bowl first, but the pitch looks a bit dry, so I don’t think there will be much change in it. So batting or bowling first won’t make much difference. There have been some positive signs (on the team’s atmosphere) in the last 2-3 matches.” Even though we haven’t won every game, there are some good positives. We have improved a lot in all departments since the first three matches of the tournament. Our bowling is performing really well and the batting is slowly getting better. We just want to maintain that momentum till the last stage of the tournament. We are really happy to be in this game, especially after the last match. But this is a new game, so we want to start fresh and start well. It is also great to see the youth getting opportunities and moving forward. This is a good sign for the franchise – they are repaying the faith shown by the management. Still a long way to go.”Teams:Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Sanju Samson (w), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Karthik Sharma, Dewald Brewis, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hossein, Noor Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapaneet Singh.Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Karun Nair, Tristan Stubbs, Nitish Rana, Axar Patel (c), Ashutosh Sharma, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, T Natarajan.

Pakistani man pleads guilty to human trafficking in US, charged $40,000 to bring people on ‘donkey route’ for film work

A Pakistani man pleaded guilty in the US to leading an international human trafficking organisation.

A Sialkot man pleaded guilty in a US court to leading an international human trafficking conspiracy that involved shell companies, fake visas and a ‘dinky’ route through Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia and then through the southern border into the US. Abbas Ali Haider, 49, was extradited from Mexico to the US in July 2025 to face charges here. After pleading guilty, he will be sentenced on July 30. Haider faces a minimum prison sentence of three years and a maximum of 10 years.$40,000 to bring illegal Pakistanis to AmericaAccording to court documents, Haider operated two fake film production companies – Diamond TV World Productions and Multimedia Advertising Limited. Both these fake companies were shown to be based in Pakistan but by using these companies he brought Pakistani citizens to America illegally. These people presented themselves as employees of Haider’s film companies traveling for film work. They were allowed to enter Latin American countries through fake visas but their final destination was the US through the Mexican border.“From approximately September 2019 to September 2023, Haider fraudulently obtained visas for Pakistani nationals to travel to Ecuador, Cuba and Colombia under the guise of legitimate business travel, while their actual destination was always the southern US border. Posing as employees of Haider’s fake companies traveling to work in films, Pakistani nationals were recruited into Latin America and the Caribbean countries. Haider’s network then led them to the US-Mexico border, from where they illegally entered California, Texas and Arizona. For this, Haider charged each individual up to $40,000,” the Justice Department said.America is sending illegal foreigners sitting in PakistanHaider used his fake film companies to sign contracts with film companies in Ecuador, Cuba and Colombia. He then sponsored visas for Pakistani nationals who were to work for Haider’s companies, under the guise that they were working on a joint filming project in Latin America. Haider provided Pakistani nationals with fake documents that showed they worked for his companies, which he used at ports of entry in Panama, Brazil and Colombia. Haider trained the aliens to say they worked in the film industry to deceive and thwart Customs and Border officers. Haider’s network of smugglers helped Pakistani nationals travel to the US-Mexico border, from where they illegally crossed into California, Texas and Arizona.Haider traveled from Pakistan to Mexico in late 2024 and was arrested in Mexico in January 2025 at the request of the US government.

Meenu Batra still not in the clear: Attorney says fight to get green card or military parole is not over

Meenu Batra’s lawyer Deepak Ahluwalia talks about what’s next for Batra’s legal fight after Batra is released from ICE custody after six weeks.

Indian-origin Meenu Batra, who was detained by ICE for living in the US as an undocumented person since 1991, remains untraced even after being released from six weeks of ICE custody, her lawyer Deepak Ahluwalia said in an interview. The release was a victory and he can no longer be detained again without notice, but they are now pushing for military parole for him, since his son is in the US Army, so that Batra can get a green card.Ahluwalia said the detention was completely unnecessary as Batra had been living in the US for 35 years, paying taxes and working as a legal interpreter for the courts. She was never called by ICE or given any information, but while she was on a work trip she was surrounded by ICE agents as if she were a cartel member. Batra could not be sent to India because there was an earlier court order to this effect and the administration was planning to send him to a third country. Ahluwalia said that during the six-week detention, the administration did not name any third country because they had no plan. They arrested Meeni Batra first and they didn’t know what to do, the lawyer said, adding that ICE is insisting on increasing the number of their arrests because they have to meet a quota. And keeping people in detention centers also benefits the corporations that run these centers, which explains the complex system running on gross abuses of justice.Ahluwalia said Meenu Batra is eligible for military parole as a family member of an army personnel. And if they can get it, they will apply for a green card for minnows.Describing his conversation with Batra after his release, Ahluwalia said that Batra considered herself an emotionally strong person because she had fled the Sikh genocide in India, but this ICE arrest shook her to the core.Ahluwalia said racism was also a factor in Meenu Batra’s detention, which instilled fear among other immigrants.Meenu Batra came to America in 1991 after her parents were murdered in Punjab. He had not entered the country legally, but in 2000, he received a legal status known as ‘suspension of removal’, which prevented him from being deported back to India for fear of persecution.

Center strengthens Supreme Court: Number of judges to be increased from 33 to 38

New Delhi: The central government at its meeting on Tuesday approved increasing the strength of judges from 33 to 37 (except the Chief Justice of India), six years after it was increased from 31 to 33.The government said the move was aimed at strengthening Supreme CourtThe aim is to ensure speedy justice as there are more than 92 thousand cases pending before the Supreme Court. The Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Modi approved the proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to increase the strength. The Constitution leaves the size of the Supreme Court open. Article 124(1) provides for the Chief Justice of India and allows Parliament to determine the number of other judges through legislation. That number has been revised from time to time to keep pace with rising cases. The first such change came with the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, which fixed the number of judges at 10, apart from the Chief Justice. Later in 1960 it was increased to 13 and in 1977 to 17. Despite this, the workforce remained limited to 15 for a period until 1979, when the restriction was lifted following a request by the Chief Justice.Further expansion took place over the decades. The approved number was increased to 25 in 1986 and to 30 in 2008. The most recent amendment came in 2019, when Parliament increased the number of judges from 30 to 33, excluding the Chief Justice of India. These periodic increases reflect an effort to align the court’s capacity with the ever-increasing backlog, even as questions remain over whether increasing the bench strength can address delays in justice delivery.
