Tower protest: How Basanti, who rewrote Sholay's script, has Veeru syndrome
Women are climbing water tanks, mobile towers and even high tension poles to create pressure on the system

Varanasi/Prayagraj: In Sholay, Veeru had climbed on the water tank for Basanti. Recently, the districts of Purvanchal have seen several iterations of that iconic cinematic moment, but with a gender twist.Women are climbing water tanks, mobile towers and even high tension poles to create pressure on the system. Sometimes it works. More often than not, it has the opposite effect. In Ballia, Jaunpur, AzamgarhIn Pratapgarh and beyond, many people have faced cases of endangering life, creating public nuisance and wasting government resources.Last month, a girl from a village in Sukhpura police station area of Ballia was in the news for about a fortnight. After filing an FIR against her boyfriend and three others alleging sexual harassment, she climbed a mobile phone tower on April 7. The police worked for hours to bring her down and eventually called her boyfriend. He agreed and the couple got married on 17 April at the Maharishi Bhrigu temple. After this the groom took his wife home. But a minor girl from a village under Nevadhiya police station of Jaunpur was not so lucky. On April 2, she climbed a mobile tower in her village and demanded that her boyfriend be released from jail and that they be allowed to live together. She was jailed on kidnapping and rape charges after her family lodged an FIR over her escape. After bringing the girl down, the police sent her to the Government Girls Home in Varanasi. From March 29 to April 21, Pratapgarh police have registered five cases where women aged between 18 and 22 climbed a water tank or mobile tower for their love. These incidents came to light from Leelapur, Kotwali, Kunda and Patti areas. The first case was reported on March 29, when a woman, upset over a romantic dispute, climbed a mobile tower with her boyfriend, demanding his marriage. It took more than two hours for the police to pacify him before they brought him down safely in the presence of family members. In April, a woman in the Patti area, upset that her family had arranged her marriage against her wishes, climbed a tower and refused to come down. However, through persuasion and counselling, the police brought her down safely and advised her family not to go ahead with the marriage without her consent. A senior official said times of India At least five cases of women climbing water tanks or mobile towers were reported within a month. But, every time the police managed to bring them down safely. Yet, this trend has shocked the force, as women are using such risky acts to press for their demands. In Shahganj, Jaunpur, a 19-year-old girl climbed an electric pole demanding marriage with a young man who was jailed for having physical relations with the promise of marriage. After being released on bail, he went to Mumbai. Police, QRT and firefighters struggled for hours to bring him down.In Ghosi, Mau, a minor girl climbed a mobile tower on May 2, demanding marriage with her lover. She came down after he called her and promised her marriage. The family members had opposed this match. One such case came to light from Saraymir in Azamgarh. The police are usually lenient in such cases, but they booked most of the people who climbed the towers. A man climbed a mobile tower in Azamgarh’s Bilariaganj on April 23 and started demanding marriage from the girl he loved as her marriage was fixed with someone else. After about two hours of drama, the police brought him down but took him into custody.A 17-year-old boy from Bansdih, Ballia had to pay a heavy price for climbing a 33,000 volt high-tension electricity tower on April 19. He climbed the 80-meter high tower, demanding to speak to a 16-year-old girl from his village. He was taken down and caught. In Nagra and Bansdih areas too, two people had to face legal action after climbing a tower for love.Officials said incidents of people climbing towers, overhead tanks and electric poles are not new or surprising. Such protests happen everywhere and people make different demands, often regarding property disputes, jobs or police action in criminal cases. But he acknowledged that climbing towers to seek marriage or relationship has become a growing trend.“We have a clear SOP to deal with people climbing towers, overhead tanks or pillars. Trained, experienced senior officers in such situations psychologically interact with them,” said ADG Varanasi zone Piyush Mordia. “If a girl has climbed up, we deploy a team of women officers, women constables and anyone who can pacify her.”Psychologists like BHU professor Rakesh Pandey said these incidents are rarely suicidal. This can be called instrumental aggression displayed towards the family or institution for some important pursuit. This can be called the ultimate bargain, he said, as whenever they climb a tower or pole people surround them with mobile cameras and solve their purpose of attracting attention.“They try to create panic without caring whether it harms personal or family reputation,” said Dr Brijesh Pandey, a sociologist at the Women’s College. “Most of the people involved come from classes where the elders are less educated and pay less attention to ensuring that the younger generations retain their original culture.”Officials said the post-modern era, where advanced communication devices like smartphones are an integral part of life, is also pushing people to claim a separate identity.

‘I would rather die in my own country’: Why immigrants are choosing voluntary departure rather than detention or asylum in the US

'I would rather die in my own country': Why immigrants are choosing voluntary departure rather than detention or asylum in the US

A growing number of immigrants to the US are abandoning their legal cases and choosing to leave the country, many of whom are being held in detention centers. This comes as voluntary departures have increased under the Trump administration.Court data obtained by the Vera Institute of Justice shows that immigration judges issued more than 80,000 “voluntary departure” orders between January 2025 and March this year. The figures were shared with The Washington Post. The current data shows a sharp increase compared to the previous administration, when about 11,400 people opted in over the same period.Voluntary departure allows immigrants to leave the US without a formal deportation order. This can sometimes make it easier to legally withdraw in the future. But it also means giving up any ongoing claims to remain in the country, including asylum applications.According to the data, more than 70 percent of those granted voluntary departure under the Trump administration were in immigration detention at the time they made the request. That’s a higher proportion than during former President Joe Biden’s tenure, when the majority of people went from outside detention. The Trump administration has promoted voluntary departures as part of its immigration crackdown, with MAGA officials advertising the option in detention centers and online.Voluntary departure is a long-standing legal option for people who are unlikely to win their cases in immigration court. Applicants must generally show good moral character, have no serious criminal record, and agree to leave within a certain time frame at their own expense. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not directly note the increase in numbers, but said the administration was enforcing immigration laws more strictly. In a statement, the department said: “Biden and [then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas] Recklessly introduced millions of undocumented illegal aliens into American communities – and they abused multiple loopholes to do so, “saying Trump officials were now enforcing the law” as it was actually written.During the latter half of the Biden administration, judges issued about 750 voluntary departure orders a month. After Donald Trump returned to office, the number began to exceed 6,000 in a single month following immigration enforcement raids. Many immigrants are now detained for months awaiting trial, while very few are released on bond.Migration experts say the policy change has changed the way people experience the system.“It’s quite clear that the trend has increased, with more people in detention seeking voluntary departure as an alternative to remaining in detention,” said Ariel Ruiz Soto of the Migration Policy Institute. Some immigrants cite harsh conditions and long periods of detention as reasons for leaving.

  • A 33-year-old Middle Eastern man detained after crossing the US-Mexico border in 2024 reportedly suffered panic attacks and mental health deterioration in custody. With no criminal record and claims of religious persecution, he decided to leave after months in detention. His brother said: “He told me: ‘Look, I’m dying here anyway. I’d rather die in my own country than go to the place where I’m going to die,'” he said, adding, “‘I can’t live without freedom.'”
  • Another case involved Roman Husar, a Ukrainian artist who arrived in the US with his family under a Biden-era sponsorship program. After immigration detention and a rejected bond hearing, he opted for voluntary departure. “No one gets asylum here in Texas. No one,” he said. “People, they’ve been rejected, rejected, rejected.” His lawyer later said: “This type of voluntary departure is not voluntary,” he said. “This is coercion.”

The states with the highest numbers include Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and California, which have thousands of cases combined.

Smart sensors to be installed on old major NH bridges for early warning alerts
AI generated image used for representation

New Delhi: For continuous ‘health monitoring’ of major and extra long old bridges on NH, highway owning agencies will now install advanced sensors for quick warning in case of abnormal behavior so that corrective steps can be taken before any accident. The Road Transport Ministry has issued a standardized tender document (RFP) for procurement of Continuous Structure Monitoring System for bridges, which highway owning agencies and their engineers can use to invite bids. This is important keeping in mind that there is a dire need to monitor the behavior of old major bridges on the NH network of the country.Installing sensors to monitor bridge health is part of new major bridges, but a large number of older bridges do not have them, officials said. “We need to ensure that old bridges are continuously monitored. Now regional officials of NHAI, road transport ministry and NHIDCL can use the document to rope in the firms,” said an official. The agencies engaged will be responsible for the supply, installation, commissioning and long-term operation and maintenance of advanced equipment designed to track the structural integrity of bridges in real time. This involves the deployment of a wide range of sensors, along with hardware for data acquisition, transmission and reporting, enabling authorities to detect early warning signs of stress, damage or failure.According to the document, such works will be divided into two phases – the first phase will be for six months for installation and commissioning of the bridge health monitoring system and the second phase will include operation and maintenance of the system, ensuring interruption free functioning for at least 10 years.

‘Hantavirus’ cruise passenger who visited school on remote island Tristan de Cunha is believed to be infected

The MV Hondius visited Tristan de Cunha, the world’s most remote island, and one passenger, a British citizen, is believed to be infected.

Amid the worldwide scare over Hantavirus, it has now emerged that a passenger on the infected MV Hondius visited a school on the world’s most remote island, Tristan da Cunha, colloquially known as Tristan. It is a remote group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and is now suspected to be infected with an emerging rat virus. It is one of the three constituent parts of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Tristan has over 200 residents who depend on ships coming from South Africa for food and fuel supplies and the MV Hondius was one of them. The MV Hondius grounded off the coast of Tristan da Cunha in mid-April, three days after the death of the first passenger from hantavirus. Since there are no airstrips, the only way to reach the island is by sea, with ships departing from Cape Town about 10 times a year. The man who visited the island has been identified by the UK Health Protection Agency as a new suspected case, who is believed to still be on the island.according to a Local blog from TristanWhen the cruise visited the island, locals boarded the ship and many passengers came ashore. The Tristan blog states, “Our final voyage of the season was the MV Hondius, and while we left well into mid-April, the island continued to offer those short weather windows. She arrived on the morning of Tuesday 14 April 2026 and traveled northeast to Tristan while dealing with immigration formalities.”A statement from Tristan da Cunha administrator Philip Kendall said the infections on the MV Hondius were “a matter of grave concern for the island”.

Level 3 emergency in America

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has activated its emergency operations centers and classified the hantavirus outbreak as “Level 3”, the lowest level of emergency activation and specific to the situation. State health department officials in Texas, Arizona, Georgia, California and Virginia confirmed to The US Sun on Thursday that they were monitoring people who disembarked from the plane.Hantavirus is usually spread by contact with infected rodents, but WHO has confirmed that it is a strain known as Andes virus, where transmission between humans can occur through close and prolonged contact.

Decoding Bengal SIR data: Of 123 in the margins, 49 in close focus india news

BJP Winning 207 seats, surpassing most expectations, powerful TMC Were reduced to 80, and other parties were reduced to mere footnotes. Many pundits believe that the anti-incumbency wave was so intense that it perhaps drove much of the unease and anger around SIR, which TMC wanted to exploit. Some have previously argued that the deletion was done in a politically motivated manner to tilt the situation in favor of the BJP, particularly pointing to the “logical inconsistency” factor introduced late in the SIR process. Here, we decode the data based on various boundaries. To understand the potential impact of SIR, the most obvious starting point is to examine seats where voter deletion was greater than the margin of winning the seat. This analysis uses constituency-wise deletion calculations by the Saber Institute, mapped with 2026 result-margin data. Pure extinction here means extinction due to reasons other than death. The net-deletion table covers 294 assembly constituencies and involves 66,62,010 deletions. And this is where the first big number comes in.In 123 of the 293 declared seats in Bengal, the net deletion was larger than the margin of victory. Of these, BJP won 83 seats, TMC won 38 and Congress won 2 seats. The BJP’s tally of 83 seats is almost two-thirds of the 123, which is roughly in the same area as its overall dominance in the election. There is a second, more intense layer. Supplementary deletions from the supplementary/adjudication layer crossed the margin of victory on 49 seats. This refers to under-decided voters whose names were ultimately removed. At last count, out of about 60 lakh names under consideration, 27.16 lakh were removed. When mapped constituency-wise, BJP won 26 of these 49 seats, TMC 21 and Congress 2.For clarity, we are using the term stress in the narrow arithmetic sense. A seat is counted as an extinction-stressed seat when the number of extinctions is greater than the margin of victory. So if a constituency was won by 5,000 votes and the net deletion was 12,000, that seat enters the tension list because the deletion was more than double the margin.

Who won the seats where deletion is more than the margin?

This does not mean that the result would have changed. It only means that the number of deletions compared to the margin was large enough to be electorally significant. All 49 of these complement-deletion strain seats were already inside the larger 123-seat net-deletion strain universe.

stress level net deletion complementary deletion
Elimination > Margin of victory 123 49
Elimination > 2x win margin 65 23
Elimination > 5x win margin 20 10

These numbers matter because they keep the debate from becoming vague. On 65 seats, the net deletion was not just bigger than the margin; This was more than double the margin. On 20 seats this difference was more than five times. Even by the narrow complementation-deletion test, 23 seats crossed the 2x mark and 10 seats crossed the 5x mark. That is not a clerical footnote.Take Rajarhat New Town. BJP won by just 316 votes. The net deletion there was 50,274. Complementary deletions alone were 24,132. According to complementation testing, the difference in deletions was more than 76-fold; According to the net-deletion test, this margin was more than 159 times greater. In Satgachia, BJP’s margin was 401, while pure deletion was 17,783 and supplementary deletion was 8,785. In Kashipur-Belgachia, BJP won by 1,651, while the net loss was 39,278.These figures do not say that the result would have changed. He says that the number of deletions was so large that it could not be ignored. But this is where the story becomes more interesting than partisan talk. High extinction tension does not always mean a victory for the BJP.Look at Samserganj. TMC won by 7,587 votes. Congress remained at second position. The net deletion was 83,662. Complementary deletions alone were 74,775, approximately 10 times the margin. If the tension of extinction had automatically translated into BJP’s advantage, Samserganj would not have looked like this. Therefore, the more acute political question is not just where extinction has gone beyond the margins. Was intense vote-share churning seen on these seats too? Did BJP move forward rapidly? Did TMC fall drastically? Did the extinction-margin map overlap with the political swing map?The clear benchmark comes from the 129 seats that went directly from TMC in 2021 to BJP in 2026. On these seats, BJP’s average vote-share gain on an adjusted basis was 10.63 percentage points, while TMC’s average decline was 8.90 points. The average two-way churn was 19.53 points. The strongest churn signal comes from the overlap of the top 50 BJP-gained seats and the top 50 TMC-gained seats, both measured in percentage-point terms. Both lists include thirty-five constituencies. Among these, BJP gained an average of 15.93 points, while TMC fell by 12.35 points. That is the real churning area, where the rise of BJP and the fall of TMC happened simultaneously. This matters because the 123 extinction-margin seats are not of a political type.

pure deletion

There are some BJP-changed seats, where the tension of deletion and churning went on simultaneously. There are some TMC-eroded seats where the beneficiary was not always the BJP. Some are seats with only arithmetic tension, where deletions exceeded the margin but the vote-share movement was not dramatic.Bhabanipur is a good example of the first type. It is not part of the 49-seat complementation-deletion strain list. There the complement was smaller than the deletion margin. But the widespread net deletion was 2.66 times the margin. At the same time, BJP’s vote share increased by 17.86 percentage points, while TMC’s vote share fell by 15.52 points. So Bhabanipur is not a story of decision-making. It’s a net-deletion-plus-churn story.Jadavpur also tells a similar story. The net deletion was 1.25 times the margin. The complementary deletion was small. But BJP’s vote share jumped by 21.29 points, while TMC’s fell by 11.58 points. Jadavpur is not in the supplementary core, but is part of the broader extinction-margin and churn map. However, Nandigram is different. This technically falls into net-extinction stress territory, but only justifiably. BJP won by 9,665. The net deletion was 9,891, just 226 more than the margin. Complementary deletions did not cross the margin. BJP’s vote share increased by only 1.88 points. TMC’s decline was 1.09 points. There are also different political types within the 49 complement-stress seats.

49 seats where supplementary deletion was more than the margin

There are some clearly BJP-whipped seats. For example, supplementary deletion in Jangipur shows a difference of more than three times, with the BJP gaining 20.73 points, and the TMC falling 30.88 points. Rajarhat New Town, Kashipur-Belgachhia, Manikchak and Monteshwar also fall in this strong zone: crossing the extinction margin, BJP rose sharply and TMC fell sharply. But the second set tells a different story. Farakka, Raninagar, Lalgola, Raghunathganj, Mothabari, Suti and Samserganj show TMC’s erosion under high electoral stress, but the beneficiary was not always the BJP. In Murshidabad and parts of Malda, the Congress and the local competition structure mattered. TMC’s falling vote does not always translate into increasing BJP’s vote. Then there is the third bucket. The extinction-to-margin ratio was high in Raina, Pandabeswar and Jangipara, but the BJP-TMC churn was weak. Pandabesvara is particularly useful as a warning. BJP won and the margin of supplementary deletion was more than four times, but TMC’s vote share actually increased by 0.29 points. It cannot be called an anti-TMC churning seat.In a smaller group, especially in Kolkata and urban-surrounding areas, margin tension prevailed with the BJP’s sharp rise and TMC’s sharp decline. Therefore, there is no definitive way to say that the seats most affected by SIR disproportionately helped a certain political party. Looked at at a micro level, this broadly reflects the current ground situation in that constituency. The SIR had “Special” in the name, but the results were not statistically tragic. What stood out was the margin mathematics that held it back.
