1.5 lakh fake AI citations entered scientific records by 2025: Study
Suggest that many researchers are copying without checking

Bengaluru: As a flood of AI-generated fake citations enter the scientific literature, a new study estimates nearly 1.5 lakh fabricated references entering the record by 2025, with the majority moving from preprints to peer-reviewed journals. This is the central finding of a large-scale study by researchers at Cornell University, UCLA and UC Berkeley, which analyzed 111 million citations in 2.5 million research papers published between 2020 and 2025 on arXiv, BioRxiv, SSRN and PubMed Central. The study, titled ‘LLM Hallucinations in the Wild’, tracked citations whose titles could not be verified against major academic databases including Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex and Google Scholar. By comparing trends after 2022 with a pre-ChatGPT error baseline, the researchers isolated the potential contribution of AI-generated hallucinations to the increase. The fastest growth began in mid-2024, about 18 months after ChatGPT’s public release, as AI tools evolved from writing assistants to citation-generation engines. The contamination is clearly not concentrated in the fraudulent papers. The researchers found that fake references are generally sparsely sprinkled into otherwise legitimate manuscripts, suggesting that many researchers are copying AI-generated citations without verifying them. Existing security measures are failing. Approximately 78.8% of duplicate citations passed arXiv moderation, and 85.3% of the duplicate citations in bioRxiv preprints subsequently published in PubMed Central-indexed journals made it into the final published versions. Researchers warn that the problem may now be self-reinforcing: As fabricated references embed themselves in open-access repositories and citation databases, future AI models trained on that corpus risk absorbing and reproducing the same hallucinations.Study in Lancet also warns In a separate study titled “Fabricated citations: an audit across 2.5 million biomedical papers,” published in The Lancet, researchers found a sharp increase in fabricated citations in biomedical research papers. The study, conducted by researchers at Columbia University and other institutions, analyzed biomedical papers published between 2023 and early 2026. It found 2,810 peer-reviewed papers contained more than 4,000 fabricated references. The audit found that the rate of fabricated references had increased dramatically over a three-year period. In 2023, approximately one in 2,828 papers contained at least one fabricated citation. By 2025, this figure had worsened to one in 458 papers, and by early 2026, it had reached one in 277 papers. One of the most striking examples cited in the study involved a 2025 paper in an open-access oncology journal on ureteral surgical techniques. The researchers found that 18 of the paper’s 30 verified references (60%) were fabricated. The authors link this increase partly to the widespread adoption of LLMs that are known to “hallucinate” fake citations. Warning that fabricated citations could compromise clinical guidelines and systematic reviews, researchers urged publishers to introduce automated reference verification systems before accepting papers for publication. The study said that about 98% of the affected papers did not face any publisher action at the time of the audit.

“Fake relationship”: Taylor Swift fans accuse Travis Kelce of sending “mixed signals” with Instagram move nfl news

"fake relationship":Taylor Swift fans take on Travis Kelce with Instagram move
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce fans are facing fresh online drama after viral screenshots showed the NFL star no longer follows Swift on Instagram, while ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn still does. Fans debated whether the move was intentional, with some calling it suspicious and others claiming that the couple avoided social media followers to prevent breakup rumors and unnecessary media speculation.

fans of Taylor Swift And travis kels Every detail of the couple’s online behavior is once again being analyzed after a viral social media post raised questions about why the Kansas City Chiefs star still doesn’t follow Swift Instagram.Conversations escalated after users compared Kelce’s account activity to Swift’s ex-boyfriend joe alwynWho reportedly still follows the pop icon online. What started as a casual observation soon turned into a full-fledged fan discussion, with supporters offering different explanations for the digital option.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s fan reactions take over social media

The original viral post read:“Social media really sells the illusion of fake relationships, right? On one hand, we have Travis Kelce, who is the person who shows the most love for Taylor Swift through his actions, but does not follow her.On the other hand, we have Joe Alvin, who was indifferent towards her, but still pursues her.Screenshots attached to the post showed Kelce’s Instagram following list appearing in search results without Swift’s account, while Alvin’s account was still following her page. Then a fan added another layer to the debate, writing:“But why exactly does Taylor’s fiancee follow nearly 1700 people and not follow him?”That comment quickly drew responses from other users trying to explain the situation. One reply simply said:“None of them follow each other kkkkk”Another user argued that the decision may actually have been deliberate:“To avoid problems with the press! If there is a bug and it stops stalking or does not show that it is stalking, it will appear on all the gossip sites, they will say the relationship is over and we will need Tree to deny it.”A different fan posted echoing the same theory:“A very obvious move, isn’t it?! They avoid any speculation about whether to follow or not”

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift continue to fuel online curiosity

The discussion highlights how closely fans follow celebrity relationships in the social media age. Every follow, unfollow, like, or missed conversation can become headline material within minutes. For Swift and Kelsey, the attention has only increased as engagement rumors continue to circulate online.Still, many fans pointed out that the couple’s public appearances and obvious support for each other mattered more than Instagram activity. Kelce has frequently attended Swift’s Chiefs events, while Swift has attended several Chiefs games since their relationship went public. For many supporters, real-world presence is more important than any social media follow button. Yet in the age of Internet sleuths and viral fan theories, even a lost Instagram connection can dominate conversations for days.

They’re holding civilian ships hostage, including ships that are now stuck in the Persian Gulf,” Rubio said. He said that the Donald Trump administration will never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. He said, “This is an Iran that has committed murders and attempted murders of people around the world, including civilians and dissidents and people they don’t agree with. There is no country on Earth that sponsors terrorism more than Iran. And they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars sponsoring terrorism and targeting individuals around the world.”The Iranian embassy here rejected Rubio’s comments, saying the current “disrupting and threatening maritime security and passage of ships” in the Strait of Hormuz was a “military, provocative and audacious action by the US and the Zionist regime in the region”. “Both of these regimes are key drivers behind the escalating global security and energy crisis and seek to further their political and military objectives by creating instability and insecurity,” it said. The embassy also said that Iran, “as a committed member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, has consistently declared that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and remains under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency”.

'Would shoot her': Luigi Mangione fangirl says she'd kill her pharmacist mother if she became a healthcare executive

A woman saved luigi mangione And she sparked outrage after claiming she would kill her mother if she became a health care executive like the slain UnitedHealthcare CEO. Brian Thompson.Lena Weisbrot, 32, made the comment on Instagram after reports identified her mother, Rena Natero, as an executive at CVS Health who oversees prescription drug insurance coverage rules.Weisbrot first attempted to downplay his mother’s condition after the information became public.“He’s an activist,” she wrote in a text message screenshot, which she later shared to her Instagram Story, according to the New York Post. After this he escalated the controversy with shocking comments.“If my mother had been a health insurance executive I would have shot her myself,” Weisbrot wrote. He continued to imagine a hypothetical scenario in which he inherited money from his mother after such an act.“If she were a health insurance executive like Brené [sic] Thompson, and I were the same person I am now and if I had known what I would do now (not likely because I am coming from and [sic] extremely wealthy family would make me a fundamentally different person), and I was still in the will and I thought I could get away with it, I would inherit the money and redistribute it to all the families he destroyed with his murderous company,” she wrote. He added, “But it’s so far from my reality, it’s just a fantasy. A fantasy that makes me…wet.”In another Instagram Story post, Weisbrot wrote: “Debate: If my mom was a health insurance CEO would I really comment on that.”He added: “When it comes to me arguing about hypothetical situations that don’t exist: no.”Weisbrot is known online as one of several self-described “Mangionistas”, a group of supporters and independent bloggers who have attended Luigi Mangione’s court hearings using press credentials issued by the City of New York.Mangione is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, whose death sparked online debate over the US healthcare system. Some consider his death justified, while others say Mangione is another ruthless killer.Outside a recent court hearing, Weisbrot caused further backlash after saying that Thompson’s children are “better off without her”.He said, “He has to learn not to be like his father – and enjoy blood money.”

Congress denies entry of AIADMK into Tamil Nadu government

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing controversy over the fate of the rebel AIADMK faction in Tamil Nadu and the close figures given to the TVK alliance, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said the AIADMK will not join the Vijay government and the mandate in the state is against any kind of “backdoor” politics by the BJP.Tagore, an early supporter of the Congress’s move to TVK from the DMK camp, told TOI that the numbers in the state are not close to destabilizing the Vijay government, and the arrangement will work well.Asked about the VCK’s threat to leave the government if the AIADMK faction is given ministerial berths, Tagore said, “AIADMK is not joining the government. So, the question does not arise. We are clear. We are against the BJP.” BJP’s behind the scenes politics should not be allowed. The Vijay government fell short of the majority mark by only 10 seats. All parties – Congress, VCK, IUML, Left – gave numbers. Therefore there is no need to take help from any other party. The government is safe.”Tagore argued that the numbers were not as close as were being reported, and that “TVK’s floor managers will deal with the issue.”Tagore said the rebellion in the AIADMK happened because the party never entered into an alliance with the DMK, but party chief Edappadi Palaniswami planned to form a government with the DMK after it returned a hung assembly in the state elections. He said, “The reason they (AIADMK faction) gave was that they could not go with the DMK because the party was founded against the DMK. These 25 MLAs were against the move, and instead sided with the TVK. The Speaker has to decide about their membership. The issue is on the Speaker’s table.”Expressing confidence about the future of a “secular progressive government”, Tagore said the TVK regime is the first coalition government in TN since 1957. He said, “We hope that a new era of alliance has come in TN, and we feel that we will fight the politics of hate that is trying to enter TN.”

GPS spoofing targets IGIA just hours after Rubio reaches Delhi delhi news

GPS spoofing hits IGIA just hours after Rubio reaches Delhi

New Delhi: Barely hours after the US Secretary of State marco rubio As soon as it landed in Delhi on Saturday, the capital’s IGI airport once again became the target of GPS spoofing.About 10 to 12 aircraft flying close to the airport on Saturday evening and night reported a threat not seen on this scale after a few months. Government agencies are investigating the sudden recurrence of GPS spoofing – a cyber attack where fake radio signals are transmitted to override real satellite signals – and that too at the time of the VVIP visit.Air traffic control immediately increased the distance between incoming aircraft to allow more time to safely guide them to the airport using radar vectors. This resulted in overcrowding and some problems flight delay.“When spoofing occurs, we switch to the pre-GPS days of flying, which means flying from one point to another instead of going straight to the destination. This means greater monitoring of the status of aircraft,” air traffic controllers said.Below 14,000 feet, planes headed towards Delhi generally have a difference of 3 nautical miles. On Saturday night it was increased to 5 NM. “This impacts capacity as Delhi can normally handle 42 arrivals an hour. When aircraft have to fly using radar vectors or without GPS this number comes down to about 30 or even less,” air traffic controllers said.Broadly speaking, airliners face two types of GPS problems – jamming commonly used by militaries in war zones to avoid giving away the location of military assets, including aircraft; And hoaxes are being used by miscreants to confuse pilots in conflict zones from Pakistan to the Middle East, Türkiye and Ukraine. Spoofing distorts GPS signals, resulting in the pilot receiving a false indication of his location: up to 2,500 km away from the actual location.

Delhi Capitals were already eliminated after PBKS’s win over Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, leaving only pride and the final standings to play for at the Eden Gardens. Batting first after the KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane Deciding to bowl, Delhi Capitals scored 203 for 5 at the top thanks to an explosive half-century from Rahul. The DC openers looked in complete control from the start and attacked both pace and spin with ease. Rahul hit five fours and four sixes during his innings of 60 runs in 30 balls and registered his sixth half-century of this season. he specifically targeted Sunil NarineDancing on the track again and again to clear the ropes. In one over, Rahul hit a skyscraper six off Narine over long-on and followed it up with another four over the spinner’s head. After this, Rahul changed his stance further against Karthik Tyagi and completed his half-century in 25 balls by scoring 20 runs by hitting one four and a straight six in one over. At that point, Delhi looked set for a total of over 220. However, KKR managed to regain some control through Anukul Roy, who dismissed Rahul towards the end of the game. Sahil Parakh also scored 24 runs before Axar Patel scored 39 runs, while Varun Chakravarthy returned with 1 for 35 despite continuing to play with a hairline fracture in his left toe. KKR got off to a positive start in their chase, with Rahane taking charge of the side in what could possibly be his final appearance for the franchise. Who was Kamran Aman? Delivery driver stabbed to death in racist attack by teenagers in Britain

Who was Kamran Aman? Delivery driver stabbed to death in racist attack by teenagers in Britain

The life sentences handed down to two teenage boys convicted of the racist murder of 38-year-old Kamran Aman in Wales have been referred to the Court of Appeal amid concerns the sentences could be “unduly lenient”.Marcus Staniforth, 17, and a 16-year-old boy, whose identity is protected by law, were jailed for life after brutally attacking Aman outside his mother’s home in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, earlier this year. The victim, described as a devoted husband and father, had given groceries to his mother just before midnight on June 30 last year when he was attacked without provocation.

Who was Kamran Aman??

Kamran Aman, 38, was a grocery delivery driver and family man who had visited his mother’s home on Barry Road shortly before the attack. According to prosecutors, Aman was preparing to return to his car when the teenagers targeted him.Court proceedings revealed that the attackers had been drinking and taking drugs at a nearby house before spotting Aman sitting in his vehicle. Before trying to confront Aman, the young defendant allegedly began shouting racist abuse, including anti-Pakistan slurs.

The attack was described as ‘relentless’

After failing to enter the passenger side of the car, the teen came to the driver’s side, forcing Aman to get out and defend himself when he was punched.Witnesses described the attacks as “relentless”, with neighbors telling the court that the boys behaved like a “pack of animals”.During the attack, Staniforth fled to a nearby house and returned a short time later carrying a large kitchen knife. Eyewitnesses said he swung the weapon several times before stabbing Aman in the heart.Even as the victim lay in a pool of blood, the younger boy allegedly continued to use racist abuse, including the N-word and slurs targeting Pakistani people.

Evidence and arrest

Paramedics attempted emergency open-heart surgery at the scene, but Aman died of fatal chest wounds. The court heard that after the stabbing, Staniforth went back inside the house and attempted to wash the knife and his hands with bleach before the two teenagers fled.Within about 10 minutes of the attack, the police arrested him at a short distance. Investigators later found Staniforth’s DNA on the knife, while Aman’s blood was found on the boys’ clothes and shoes.

Court can increase the punishment

At Cardiff Crown Court in February, Staniforth received a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years, while the 16-year-old was ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years before being eligible for parole.Mr Justice Griffiths described Staniforth as “a very dangerous young man indeed” and told the young defendant that he had “instigated a deliberate, unprovoked, sustained, violent racist attack”.The case has now been referred under an unnecessarily lenient sentencing scheme, meaning the appeal court judge will decide whether the minimum prison sentence should be increased.
