Opposition files fresh notice demanding removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi: Opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha on Friday submitted a fresh notice to the Secretary General, demanding a motion to remove Gyanesh Kumar from the post of Chief Election Commissioner on the grounds of “proven misconduct”.Earlier this month, notices submitted by opposition MPs in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were rejected by the Speaker and the Chairman respectively. In its latest notice, the opposition has made nine new allegations against Kumar.According to Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh, a resolution has been sought “on the basis of proven misconduct” – an example of this being the “straight talk” social media post by the Election Commission after the meeting with the TMC delegation on April 8. The meeting ended in a heated exchange, with TMC leaders saying the CEC told them to “get lost”, and the Election Commission accusing them of shouting.Ramesh said, “There are now nine specific allegations against the CEC, which have been recorded in great detail and cannot be easily denied or dismissed. His continuance in office is an attack on the Constitution. It is extremely disgraceful that the man continues to hold office to follow the orders of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister.”The resolution has been signed by MPs from Congress, TMC, DMK, SP, RJD, CPI, CPM, NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), JMM, IUML, NC and AAP.Under the fresh charges, the opposition has accused Kumar of “continuing partisan bias in implementing the Model Code of Conduct”, alleging that the Election Commission failed to act on complaints against PM Narendra Modi’s address to the nation on April 18 over the defeated Constitution Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation amid the assembly elections. It added that the CEC has not issued any show cause notice, any advisory and any public response on any complaint made in this regard. Other allegations include “administrative lapses evidencing institutional closeness with the governing party” and “conduct unbecoming a constitutional functionary”. The list of allegations also includes large-scale disenfranchisement in West Bengal including deletion of names of about 91 lakh voters and judicial disenfranchisement of about 34 lakh voters.

IPL 2026, RCB vs GT: Selfless Virat Kohli praises Devdutt Padikkal as the real hero of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s win over Gujarat Titans

Virat Kohli was named the player of the match after Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday. Kohli scored 81 runs on 44 balls RCB achieved the target of 206 runs in 18.5 overs.. However, he described Devdutt Padikkal as the real difference-maker and the real hero of the victory.

Padikkal scored a half-century in 20 balls and scored 55 runs in 27 balls, before he was dismissed by Rashid Khan. Kohli said that their 115-run partnership for the second wicket set the tone for the chase. He also remembered Padikkal’s inning of 61 runs in 26 balls earlier. IPL 2026, when they made a partnership of 101 runs RCB wins over Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets.

“We had to assess the conditions early on. We were just one partnership away. We wanted to try and analyse. Padikkal has done that twice this season. It’s quite rare to be honest. His innings was the clear difference. I was trying to stay in the game. That partnership was a game changer,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Virat Kohli praised RCB bowlers

Kohli also praised the RCB bowlers for not letting the GT batsmen take the game away. After 16 overs, the Titans were at 170 and looked set to sail towards 230 or more. However, RCB conceded only 17 runs in the next three overs – less than a run-a-ball – before Krunal Pandya scored 18 runs in the final over.

“Even in our bowling innings, we did well in pulling things back. We were looking at 230-235 at one point,” Kohli said.

Kohli also got luck to some extent. In the very first over of RCB’s chase, they got relief on the very first ball. Mohammed Siraj created a chance, but Washington Sundar dropped a simple catch at midwicket, after which Kohli made GT pay.

Kohli also hit 300 sixes in the IPL and is now just 11 runs short of becoming the first batsman to reach 9,000 runs in the history of the tournament. Meanwhile, with their win over GT, RCB moved up to second on the table with 10 points and a net run rate of +1.101, having won five of their seven matches.

Supreme Court says huge turnout in Bengal and Tamil Nadu is real sign of democracy India News

Supreme Court says heavy voting in Bengal and Tamil Nadu is real sign of democracy

New Delhi: After dealing with petitions challenging the special intensive review and deploying judicial officers to conduct an impartial investigation, the Supreme Court on Friday described the record 92 per cent turnout in the first phase of West Bengal assembly elections as a sign of the strong democratic process in the country. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi made the remarks when TMC MP and senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, a vocal opponent of SIR, said, “A good thing happened. A record 92% turnout happened because all the migrant laborers reached the state to cast their votes due to the fear that if they did not do so, their names would be struck off from the voter list.”

People should realize the power of their vote: CJI Kant

Justice Bagchi said, “Another good thing is that there was no violence during the voting except isolated incidents.” CJI Kant said, “As a citizen of India, I am very happy to see the high percentage of voting. People need to participate in voting.”Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also said the forces did a commendable job in preventing violence which resulted in high turnout. Justice Bagchi cited a Bengali proverb to describe earlier violence during state elections and said, “When kings fight, poor people suffer and die”.CJI Surya Kant said, “People should realize the power of their vote in a democracy. More than 92% people went to vote. When a large number of people go to vote, there is no violence. This shows that people realized that their power lies in the democratic system.”SG Mehta said, “92 per cent voting is historic. Barring sporadic violence, the forces have done a commendable job. We should be grateful to them. The state has a history of violence before and after the elections.”The CJI said, “This shows the fairness of the democratic process. There has been heavy voting in Tamil Nadu also.”Justice Bagchi said, “Voting in the democratic process is something that needs to be protected and respected. Otherwise, the basic essence of democracy will be lost.”Turning to senior advocate DS Naidu, representing Election CommissionJustice Bagchi said, “For the change, Naidu’s client has been appreciated by all.” This unexpected praise for the Election Commission angered Banerjee, who disagreed with it and said that the Calcutta High Court has been reprimanding the Election Commission for the last three days. Naidu protested and said that Banerjee was behaving inappropriately and unfairly. “It is Banerjee who is misusing the Election Commission in the courts,” he said.Mehta requested the bench to end the proceedings and warned that the debate would turn into a political discourse by Trinamool. The bench adjourned by asking both Naidu and Banerjee to have lunch together.

Government increased wheat procurement target by 15% as farmers turned to MSP

Government increased wheat procurement target by 15% as farmers turned to MSP

New Delhi: The government has increased the wheat procurement target to 34.5 million tonnes (MT), about 15% more than the target set for the current Rabi marketing season. This comes amid indications that more farmers may choose to sell their produce to the government at MSP as mandi prices are lower.Recently, the governments of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar sought to increase wheat procurement from the Centre. While the government usually revises the targets near the end of the procurement period, this year the decision was taken early. The government on Friday urged flour mills to buy wheat directly from the market instead of relying on Food Corporation of India (FCI) sales. The government has so far purchased 16.4 metric tonnes of wheat in the current procurement season. The all-India average mandi price of wheat on April 22 was Rs 2,572, against the MSP of Rs 2,585 per quintal. The average farmgate price in UP was Rs 2,439 per quintal and in MP it was Rs 2,416.At the release of the “Annual Wheat Survey Report 2026” prepared by the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that on the request of the state governments, in MP (7.8 MT to 10 MT), UP (1 MT to 2.5 MT), Rajasthan (2.1 MT to 2.3 MT), Bihar (18,000 MT to 1,80,000 MT) and Procurement targets have been increased. Uttarakhand (1,000 tonnes to 50,000 tonnes). The government has relaxed procurement norms for four states except Uttarakhand, where crop was damaged due to adverse weather.Chopra said he estimates wheat production to be between 110-120 metric tonnes after losses due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm in major producing states. The Flour Millers Federation has estimated wheat production at 110 metric tonnes. The agriculture ministry had earlier estimated production at 120.2 metric tonnes before adverse weather conditions. The annual survey report said there was moderate to high impact on wheat crop in nine states – Punjab, West Bengal, UP, Haryana, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra – due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm between February and April.
