IIT to H-1B: JD Vance calls out academic in-laws for red flagging green cards without loyalty test

'Great contributor': How JD Vance balanced praise of Indian roots with criticism of H1B visa fraud

TOI correspondent from Washington: US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday doubled down on the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration stance, signaling deep skepticism towards the H-1B visa program that considers national “loyalty” as the ultimate litmus test for immigrants.Speaking at a TurningPointUSA townhall in Georgia, Vance sidestepped a question from an Indian-origin student about the decades-long green card backlog, instead pointing to systemic fraud in the program and cultural expectations of assimilation, instead offering policy prescriptions for the estimated million-plus Indians currently stuck in the permanent residence queue.

‘Great contributor’: How JD Vance balanced praise of Indian roots with criticism of H1B visa fraud

The US Veep, who has long portrayed the H-1B program as a tool for “big tech” to suppress American wages – despite being financed by big tech early in his political career – told the young audience that the system is currently rife with abuse. He recalled his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, and his parents as role models for successful assimilation, saying, “You can believe that there has been a lot of H-1B fraud, and also believe that there have been people who have come to the United States who have enriched this country.”“Look, I’m married to the daughter of immigrants from India… I love my in-laws and they have made great contributions to the United States. I also think that when you become an American citizen, whether you have nine generations of lineage or zero, one of your obligations is to think about the best interest of your country, not the best interest of the country you came from.” Expressing his irritation at a Ukrainian-American who pressured him to supply arms to Ukraine, he said that his father-in-law, who moved to the US and became a US citizen, never told him that he should take any decision because it was in the best interest of the country he came from. Vance argued, “The extent to which this attitude prevails among the new generation (of immigrants) makes Americans feel welcome. Being an American means taking care of Americans first, and that is the perspective we need to adopt in our immigration policy.” Vance’s in-laws, Radhakrishna “Krish” Chilukuri and Dr. Lakshmi Chilukuri, immigrated from Andhra Pradesh, India in the late 1970s. Krish Chilukuri, a mechanical engineer who studied at IIT Madras, is a lecturer in aerospace engineering at San Diego State University. Dr. Lakshmi Chilukuri is Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of California, San Diego. Both have built distinguished academic careers in California after arriving legally decades ago. While the student’s question concerned law-abiding, high-tax-paying professionals waiting decades for a green card because of country-based quotas, Vance ignored the issue, avoiding any promises to raise the 7% per-country cap, which favors smaller countries (like Nepal and Sri Lanka, whose immigrants get residency faster). Instead, he suggested that massively reducing immigration across the board was the only way to unify the American social fabric.“The system only works if everyone thinks of themselves as Americans first,” Vance said, effectively ending the exchange without addressing the specific legislative hurdles currently in the backlog. These comments were enthusiastically praised by the MAGA wing of the party, which has recently become more vocal about curbing legal immigration as well. But it was condemned by critics, some of whom pointed out that the loyalty test does not apply to Jewish Americans, many of whom openly and vocally lobby for Israel. As the 2026 midterms approach, Vance’s deliberate stance reflects the tightrope the Trump administration has walked: satisfying its restrictionist base without alienating the tech and business sectors that rely on H-1B talent.

Magadha’s new ‘Chaudhary’: Emperor’s ‘Muretha’ fast completed with Nitish’s departure. india news

Magadh's new 'Chaudhary': With Nitish's departure, the emperor's 'Muretha' fast completed

After Nitish Kumar stepped down from the post, political change in Bihar has come as expected as he announced his entry into Rajya Sabha. Once Nitish signaled his exit from state politics, the BJP put forward its most prominent and politically viable face in Bihar, Samrat Chaudhary, to take charge of the government. However, the historical change in Magadha had its own flavor of ups and downs as well as Nitish’s rise to power. The man who once wore saffron muretha As a public pledge to oust Nitish from power, he has now got the chair which the JDU chief had occupied for two decades. Samrat Chaudhary’s long and dramatic promise has been fulfilled not through confrontation, but through a force in politics that almost always delivers results at the right time. Patience. Samrat Choudhary, who was unanimously elected leader of the NDA legislature party, has now become the new face of power in Bihar and the first BJP leader to lead the state government. His rise is a defining moment not only for the BJP’s expansion in Bihar, but also for a politician whose career has been built on reinvention, ambition and sharp political instincts.

Patna, April 15 (ANI)_BJP leader and newly appointed Chief Minister of Bihar Samrat....

BJP leader and newly appointed Chief Minister of Bihar Samrat Chaudhary at the swearing-in ceremony administered by Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain (unseen) held at Lok Bhawan, Patna on Wednesday.

emperor’s political stalwart

Chaudhary’s journey to the top has hardly followed the traditional BJP path. Unlike many leaders nurtured within the Sangh ecosystem, he comes from outside that circle. His father, veteran politician Shakuni Chaudhary, was a founding member of the Samata Party and a contemporary of both Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Samrat himself started with the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the 1990s and entered the government early on, serving as a minister under Rabri Devi. Over the years, he moved to different political camps, spending time in the JD(U) before eventually joining the BJP. That change transformed his career. His rise has been rapid since his entry into the party. In less than a decade, he rose from a late leader to state president, then deputy chief minister and now chief minister.

Samrat Chaudhary’s political journey

Interrelationship between Emperor and BJP

The rise of BJP in Bihar has been slow but sure. In the 2015 assembly elections, it emerged as the largest party in terms of vote share by securing 25 per cent votes and 53 seats, yet remained out of power as the RJD and JD(U), with 80 and 71 seats respectively, formed the government in alliance. When Nitish Kumar returned to the NDA in 2017, the balance within the alliance had started changing. This change became evident in the 2020 elections, when the BJP outperformed the JD(U), winning 74 seats against its ally’s 43 seats. Nitish Kumar remained the Chief Minister, but the BJP had established itself as a strong force in the alliance.By the 2025 elections, that transition was complete. Although the NDA once again contested the elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, the BJP emerged as the major partner with 89 seats, ahead of JD(U)’s 85. Even though Nitish retained the post of Chief Minister, the BJP strengthened its hold on the government by acquiring important ministries like Home. Within a year, that growing dominance in the party culminated in the installation of Samrat Chaudhary as the first BJP Chief Minister of Bihar.

muretha fast

The turning point came in 2022, when Nitish Kumar broke ties with NDA and again joined hands with RJD. The BJP responded by handing over the reins of its Bihar unit to Chaudhary. It was then that he made the pledge that defined his political personality. Wearing Muretha in every public function, he announced that he would not remove it until Nitish Kumar remained the Chief Minister. The image stuck. The turban became both a political symbol and a personal brand. For almost two years, this marked him as Nitish’s most obvious rival. Then came the irony. When Nitish returned to the NDA in 2024 and Chaudhary himself became the deputy chief minister in the new alliance, the old rivalry gave way to partnership.Soon after, in Ayodhya, Choudhary ended the symbolism. After offering prayers and taking a dip in Saryu, he took down the Muretha and offered it in the temple and declared his vow fulfilled. Nitish was in office at that time. Now, with Nitish moving out of Bihar and moving into the Rajya Sabha, the deeper meaning of that oath finally seems to be materializing.

About Samrat Chaudhary

Why has BJP supported Samrat?

For the BJP, Choudhary checks many strategic boxes. He is one of the strongest OBC faces of the party in Bihar and belongs to the Kushwaha or Koeri community, a politically influential group that forms a significant part of the state’s voters. With the Kurmi base long associated with Nitish Kumar, this gives the BJP a strong social coalition among backward caste voters.

How will caste mathematics work?

By installing prominent Kushwaha leader Chaudhary in the chief minister’s chair, the BJP is making a direct bid for the Koeri-Kushwaha vote, a politically influential group within Bihar’s non-Yadav OBC spectrum. The Kushwaha community alone constitutes about 4.2 per cent of the state’s population and forms a significant part of the 12.86 per cent non-Yadav OBC voters that the BJP has been aggressively courting in recent years.

Number of Yadavs in OBC is more than 14%

caste mathematics in bihar

The move also allows the BJP to partially inherit Nitish Kumar’s backward caste mathematics while reducing its dependence on him. Nitish’s strength has long rested on the Extremely Backward Class or EBC, which constitutes 36.01 per cent of Bihar’s population. Although divided among 113 castes, a large non-Muslim EBC section, including Kurmi and Koeri voters, has traditionally stood behind them. With Nitish sidelined, the BJP is attempting to prevent that faction from slipping by projecting Chaudhary as a backward caste leader who is capable of keeping sections of that support base together. The BJP has retained its traditional upper caste base among Brahmins, Rajputs, Bhumihars and Kayasthas, while expanding steadily among non-Yadav OBCs and EBCs.

beyond caste

Samrat’s appeal is not just in caste arithmetic. Choudhary has been active in Bihar politics since 1990 and has witnessed every major political phase in the state, from the Mandal-era churn to alliance realignment and the expansion of the BJP. That long experience coupled with his administrative experience in key ministries like Finance, Urban Development and Panchayati Raj has helped position him as much more than just a symbolic appointment. His rise has often been compared to that of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Like Sarma, Chaudhary came to the BJP from outside, carried the burden of earlier political affiliations, and yet became one of the most trusted regional leaders for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Controversies have also been taking place during this period. His name came up in a 1995 murder case, although he has consistently denied wrongdoing and says no charges were brought against him. In 1999, he briefly resigned as minister due to questions raised about his age. Political opponents have also expressed doubts over his academic revelations. However, none of these episodes have slowed his progress. What makes his appointment politically powerful is the layered irony within it. The person who built his recent identity around opposing Nitish Kumar has inherited Bihar only after becoming Nitish’s ally. The challenger has become the successor. In Magadha, where political memory runs deep and symbols matter, that arc gives unusual weight to this change. Bihar now has a new Chaudhary, and his Murretha pledge, once seen as a dramatic gesture, has largely ended with the prophecy fulfilled.

Meet Indian-American Randeep Dhillon who ‘wants to recreate affordable California’ but MAGA doesn’t like his English

मिलिए भारतीय-अमेरिकी रणदीप ढिल्लों से जो 'किफायती कैलिफोर्निया को फिर से बनाना चाहते हैं' लेकिन MAGA को उनकी अंग्रेजी पसंद नहीं

Indian-origin Randeep Dhillon wants to ‘make California affordable again’.

Dr. Randeep S. Dhillon is one of the lesser-known Republican candidates for California’s gubernatorial election who wants to make the state affordable. As he released his campaign videos ahead of the primaries in June, he was trolled for his English and MAGAs on social media distanced themselves from Republicans because of his Indian origins. A social media post shared Dhillon’s recent video saying, “Meet Randeep Dhillon, who is running for Governor of California. His latest campaign ad shows him barely speaking English while claiming he wants to somehow fix literacy in CA. No, this is not sarcasm. Yes, this is very real.” Dhillon said that if he wins, he will recognize children who maintain GPA levels 3.87, 3.93, support first car purchases after graduating from school, and give a $505 credit. There will be a waiver on registration fees for the first year, Dhillon said while unveiling his MACA scheme. Another social media handle said, “This guy is running on fixing literacy in CA but can’t speak English to advertise. This is real.” “It’s almost ridiculous but seriously worrying. Who is letting these people run for office?” One wrote. One wrote defending Dhillon and requesting people not to judge him based on the way he speaks, “He may not be fluent, but he is saying something that most people ignore. That’s what really matters.” Many people pointed out how he was openly trying to buy votes by promising free cars to 16-year-olds.

Who is it Dr. Randeep Dhillon?

Indian-born Randeep Dhillon is an economist, farmer and sociologist who came to America in 1986. According to his website, he has built, owned, worked for, and advised numerous small businesses and farming operations. “After immigrating to California from Punjab, India in 1986, he built his future through education, hard work, and entrepreneurship. He earned bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in finance and economics in California and developed a practical understanding of how families, farmers, workers, and business owners succeed or struggle in the real economy,” his website reads.

VHP demands nationwide law against illegal conversion, security threat
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international working president Alok Kumar (PTI file photo)

New Delhi: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad On Wednesday there were calls for a stringent nationwide law to prevent illegal religious conversions, alleging that such activities pose a threat to national security and are no longer limited to isolated incidents.VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain expressed concern over “continued reports” of conversion-related activities, including allegations related to corporate workplaces. Referring to an alleged case involving Tata Consultancy Services in Nashik, Jain claimed that the incident has exposed a widespread pattern that needs immediate attention. He further alleged that similar activities may have taken place at other companies, including Tech Mahindra, although the statement did not provide any independent verification of these claims. The VHP also lauded a group of police personnel who helped expose the alleged Nashik case, claiming that their intervention prevented more youth from being affected. Jain linked the issue to broader, organized networks beyond specific institutions. The organization argued that states that have enacted strict anti-conversion laws have seen better control over such incidents. It urged all states to adopt similar laws and called on political parties to rise above “partisan considerations” in addressing the issue. The VHP sought the Centre’s intervention, saying the ongoing investigation by the National Investigation Agency indicates that the case has wider national implications.Calling for a central law against illegal conversion, the group said stronger legal measures are needed to effectively address it as an emerging challenge to social harmony and national security.

'Women's reservation bill has already been passed': Congress accuses Center of 'stealing share' by using delimitation

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi On Wednesday accused the Center of trying to usurp power through the Delimitation Bill, saying the Women’s Reservation Bill has already been passed in 2023. congress party “Clearly” supported women’s reservation. He termed the BJP-led Centre’s proposed move to increase the Lok Sabha strength from 543 to 850 from southern and other regions as well as OBC, Dalit and tribal communities as “share theft”.He said, “The Congress party clearly supports women’s reservation. Parliament passed the bill unanimously in 2023, it is already part of our Constitution. What the government is proposing now has nothing to do with women’s reservation. This amendment is an attempt to gain power using delimitation and gerrymandering.”“We will not allow ‘share stealing’ from OBC, Dalit and tribal communities by ignoring caste census data. We will not allow the southern, north-eastern, north-western and small states to be treated unfairly.”The Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023, which ensures 33% reservation for women in legislatures, is currently attached to the delimitation exercise in the Lok Sabha. The government is reportedly looking to implement women’s reservation before the 2029 general elections by amending the 2023 Act and introducing a constitutional amendment to delink delimitation from the 2027 census. According to sources reported by ANI, there is also a proposal to expand the size of the House to 850 seats, which includes 815 seats for states and 35 seats for Union Territories, compared to the current strength of 543 Lok Sabha seats.
