New Delhi: Amid the ‘faith versus fundamental rights’ debate arising out of the traditional ban on entry of women in the age group of 10-50 years into the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple, a Hindu party on Tuesday requested a nine-member bench of the Supreme Court to review its 30-year-old judgment declaring Hinduism as a “way of life”.Expressing objection to the 1996 ruling by a three-judge bench in the Ramesh Yashwant Prabhu judgment that Hinduism “can broadly be called a way of life and nothing more than that”, a lawyer appearing for the Hindu side said that Hinduism is not a way of life but an oceanic confluence and assimilation of an infinite number of different religious beliefs and faiths.

Kerala LDF government supports ban on women in Sabarimala temple: Political and electoral context

During the ninth day of proceedings before the bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices BV Nagarathna, MM Sundaresh, A Amanullah, Arvind Kumar, AG Masih, PB Varale, R Mahadevan and J Bagchi, lawyer DV Singh said that to decide what is an essential Hindu religious practice, the court has to decide what is “Hindu religion and Hinduism”, and suggested that the Supreme Court should consider Bhagavad Gita for this. Can take help of Geeta. This echoes senior advocate MR Shamshad’s request to a nine-judge bench on Thursday to review the 1994 Ismail Faruqui judgment by a five-judge bench which had rejected the challenge to the government acquisition of the then-disputed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site and ruled that a mosque was not essential for offering prayers. He had said that the mosque is the soul of Islam and the main faith of Muslims. In the decision of Ramesh Yashwant Prabhu the Supreme Court had said, “When we think of Hinduism, we find it difficult if not impossible to define Hinduism or even to describe it adequately.”“Unlike other religions of the world, Hinduism does not claim any one prophet; it does not worship any one God; it does not believe in any one philosophical concept; it does not follow any one set of religious rituals or performances; in fact, it does not satisfy the narrow traditional characteristics of any religion or sect. It can broadly be called a way of life and nothing more,” the court had said.“Generally, Hindutva is understood as a way of life or a state of mind, and cannot be equated with or equated with religious Hindu fundamentalism… The terms ‘Hinduism’ or ‘Hindutva’ are not necessarily to be narrowly construed and understood to be confined only to strict Hindu religious practices unrelated to the culture and ethos of the people of India which reflect the way of life of the Indian people,” the judgment said.In the Ismail Farooqui judgment, the Supreme Court had ruled, “A mosque is not an essential part of the practice of the religion of Islam and Muslims may offer prayers anywhere, even in the open. Accordingly, its acquisition (of the disputed site) is not prohibited by the provisions of the Constitution of India.”

Starmer dodges ethics probe over Mandelson appointment but faces more pressure

LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday dodged a parliamentary inquiry into the choice of Jeffrey Epstein’s friend Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to Washington, but failed to answer questions about whether he had changed the rules to make the controversial appointment. On Tuesday, MPs voted 335 to 223 against asking the privileges committee to investigate whether Starmer had misled the House of Commons on a number of matters, including saying “full due process” was followed during the appointment. If the committee had found that Starmer had deliberately misled Parliament, he would have been expected to resign.Starmer had criticized the effort to launch the investigation, led by opposition Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, as a political stunt to influence voters ahead of local and regional elections on May 7. He ordered MPs from his centre-left Labor Party to oppose an investigation, which resulted in overwhelming rejection. Badenoch said it was a sign of Starmer’s weakness that he had to use such an order. The fallout from Mandelson’s appointment has left Starmer fighting for his job and for his civil service. Starmer is angry that she was not told that Mandelson failed security checks, while officials say they felt pressure from Starmer’s office to quickly confirm the appointment at the start of President Trump’s second term.Starmer’s former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, acknowledged on Tuesday that he had made a “serious mistake” by recommending Mandelson, but denied pressuring officials to ignore security concerns. McSweeney told MPs on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons that “the Prime Minister relied on my advice, and I got it wrong.” He apologized to Epstein’s victims, saying, “I am sorry for any role this controversy may have played in causing further hurt or distress.Starmer fired Mandelson in September after new details emerged about the ambassador’s friendship with Epstein.McSweeney resigned in February, saying he wanted to take responsibility for the ambassadorial appointment. McSweeney said he thinks Mandelson’s experience as a former EU trade commissioner will help broker a trade deal with the Trump administration. “I don’t think the prime minister would have chosen Mandelson if Kamala Harris had been elected president,” McSweeney said.

In speech to Congress, King Charles urges reestablishment of US-UK
President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump welcome King Charles III, Queen Camilla to the White House during state visit

King Charles III on Tuesday called on the United States and Britain to renew their long-standing transatlantic alliance in a speech at a White House dinner hosted by the president. donald trump Amidst tensions regarding Iran and Ukraine.Speaking with Trump for the first time during his four-day state visit, Charles made no direct mention of the rift between the US leader and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. But as in his rare address to Congress earlier in the day, the British monarch highlighted a partnership in which London and Washington “stand together in the best of times and the worst of times.”Charles said, “Tonight, we are here to renew an indispensable alliance that has long been the cornerstone of prosperity and security for both British and American citizens.”The lavish dinner menu included a Garden Vegetable Velouté, Spring Herbed Ravioli and Dover Sol Meunier, followed by a White House Honey and Vanilla Bean Cremex. Invited guests included Apple boss Tim Cook, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and two-time Masters-winning golfer Rory McIlroy, who was born in Northern Ireland.Earlier in Congress, Charles urged the United States to stand firm with its Western allies in a warmly received speech Tuesday. As the royal family arrived for dinner, Trump also praised the “great speech” and said he was “very jealous” — even though Charles discussed sensitive topics like climate change and the importance of NATO and the need for limits on presidential power to defend Ukraine.Addressing lawmakers during celebrations of 250 years of US independence, Charles stressed that “unwavering resolve” is needed to secure a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, which has been fighting a full-scale invasion by Russia since 2022.Earlier, Trump praised Britain, calling it America’s closest ally and welcomed Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House on a four-day state visit.‘No close friends’ Speaking after a rousing reception that included a 21-gun salute on the South Lawn, Trump struck a much warmer tone than his recent criticism of Starmer.Trump praised the “special relationship” and military partnership of the two countries, saying, “In the centuries since we won our independence, Americans have never had a closer friend than the British.”Charles shook hands with top Trump administration officials and inspected troops on the lawn with the president before a military band played the British and US national anthems and cannon shots. After this, four American jets flew noisily over the White House in view of Trump, Charles, Camilla and First Lady Melania Trump. The visit comes at a delicate moment, with Trump criticizing Britain’s stance on Iran and other policies.Despite the tension, the US President jokingly joked about his Scottish-born mother having a “crush on Charles” ahead of the conversation in the Oval Office.“He’s a fantastic guy. They’re incredible people and it’s a real honor,” Trump told reporters after the meeting.‘checks and balances’The king’s address to Congress – the first by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 – was the centerpiece of the visit.Charles pointed to shared democratic traditions, calling Congress the “bastion of democracy” and emphasizing the two countries’ common legal roots.Magna Carta has been cited in more than 160 U.S. Supreme Court cases, he said, drawing applause from opposition Democrats as it highlights the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances. The monarch also stressed deeper defense and economic ties and said cooperation in security, technology and trade is central to the alliance.“Our defence, intelligence and security ties are strong together,” he said.Security has been tightened during the trip following an alleged assassination attempt against Trump at a weekend Washington media event.Charles said, “Such acts of violence will never succeed.”The royal couple will attend a state dinner later on Tuesday, which will include a ceremonial tour mixed with sensitive diplomacy.

Bangladesh’s first N-power plant starts fuel loading

Bangladesh's first N-power plant starts fuel loading
Bangladesh has started loading fuel at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

DHAKA: Bangladesh entered the era of nuclear power generation on Tuesday as its Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant started loading fuel into its VVER-1200 reactor – the latest Russian Gen III+ pressurized water reactor technology, which India is also looking at for its future nuclear power projects, including new units at Kudankulam. The fuel for the plant’s first unit was loaded at Pabna, about 160 km from the capital Dhaka. Built by Russia’s state-run nuclear corporation Rosatom, the 2.4 GW plant (2 x 1200 MW units) aims to provide 10-12% of the country’s electricity. The first unit will be formally and legally transferred to Bangladesh for operation before the end of 2026. Rooppur NPP will play an important role in ensuring national energy security, accelerating industrialization and promoting the development of a technology-driven economy, Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mehboob Anam said, adding that the project is being built at a cost of about $13 billion, with Russia providing 90% of the state loan. The loading phase is the first in the commissioning phase of the unit and will then bring the reactor to a stable controllable power level. Officials said production will start at a low level and full production is not expected until 2027. In India, Kudankulam – which already has two Russian VVER 1000 pressurized water reactors in commercial operation since 2014 – will have two more units – 7 and 8 with larger VVER-1200 reactors – as proposed for the fourth phase of the plant. Last year, Rosatom said that technical specifications were currently being prepared for the construction of a new Russian-designed nuclear power plant with VVER-1200 reactor units in India.
