Indian-origin student in Australia in disbelief after being rejected for cashier job: 'I've done a three-year degree...'

An Indian-origin university graduate’s failed attempt to get a job at a supermarket has raised new questions about whether the job market is failing young people.Raksha Hegde, 21, has gone viral in Australia after she revealed she was rejected for a part-time retail assistant role while trying to support herself while studying for her master’s. His experience sparked debate about graduate underemployment and the value of higher education in today’s job market. In an Instagram video, Hegde said that he could not believe that he had been rejected, especially considering his educational background.‘Brother, I was rejected as a retail assistant. Basically a cashier!’ Hegde said in an Instagram video. She further said, ‘I have taken a three-year degree, and am doing a master’s and I am not getting a job. Are you telling me I went to university for three years just to get rejected as a cashier?”‘And you know what? “Let me take my master’s degree for two years and spend more money to get the degree, only to not get a single job after putting so much time, money and investment in school, university… They don’t want to hire me,” Hegde said. She concluded: ‘Are you kidding me? Is the job market that ruined?’Some social media users said that being highly educated can sometimes work against candidates in such jobs. Users said retail employers may worry that more qualified applicants will leave early for better opportunities, making hires less attractive to them.Others pointed out that supermarket roles often focus less on formal education and more on practical factors such as availability, flexibility and attitude. Employers may give preference to candidates who are still studying or aiming for a corporate career. And that is why such companies prefer to hire unemployed or less-qualified applicants.

Assembly Election Results 2026: Result date and time for Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry, exit poll prediction, where and how to check and other details | india news

Assembly Election Results 2026: Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry results date and time, exit poll predictions, where and how to check and other details

New Delhi: The stage is set for the announcement of the results of the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry and the counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 8 am on May 4. The results will decide the fate of 824 assembly seats and decide the political direction in five assemblies. The Election Commission has said that counting of votes will take place simultaneously in all constituencies, with initial trends expected within the first one to two hours. Initial trends are likely to emerge by morning, while final results are expected by evening. Voters can track real-time updates on the ECI website and timeofinfdia.com.Watch complete coverage of the elections here: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/elections/assembly-electionsVoting for these elections took place in April, with Assam, Kerala and Puducherry voting in two phases on 9 April, Tamil Nadu on 23 April and West Bengal on 23 April and 29 April. West Bengal witnessed the highest turnout, over 92 per cent across all phases, while Assam saw a record 85.38 per cent participation. Voting was 84.69 percent in Tamil Nadu, 79.63 percent in Kerala and 89.87 percent in Puducherry.

How are votes counted

The counting process follows a structured and stringent monitoring system. Postal ballots are taken first, then votes are recorded in electronic voting machines. Counting for each constituency is conducted in multiple rounds, with results updated after each round. The returning officer declares the final result after all the rounds are completed and verified.Security at counting centers remains tight, strong rooms are guarded and access is restricted to authorized personnel and candidates’ representatives. The use of EVMs ensures faster tabulation, although verification processes and round-wise counting mean that the process continues throughout the day.

Exit polls, poll of polls: what do the projections say?

Exit polls for the 2026 assembly elections indicate a fragmented and state-specific verdict, with no national trend emerging in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry. Most surveys in West Bengal point to a close contest between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, raising the possibility of a hung assembly. Both parties are close to the majority mark in the 294-member House, according to surveys, which suggests that even minor fluctuations in votes could determine the winner. While some agencies like P-MARQ are projecting a BJP lead with 150-175 seats, other agencies like Matrice show a tight race, with the two parties at a distance. Tamil Nadu presents a more complex picture. While many exit polls predict that the DMK-led alliance led by MK Stalin may retain power with a comfortable majority, others highlight the disruptive entry of the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam. Axis My India projects TVK as a likely front-runner with 98–120 seats, even placing Vijay ahead of Stalin in preference for the chief ministerial post, although most other pollsters limit TVK to a smaller number, while still acknowledging its potential to influence the results. In Assam, projections are more conclusive, with exit polls predicting a massive BJP victory. Most surveys predict the party to win between 85 to 100 seats in the 126-member assembly, far ahead of the Congress, which is expected to win between 25-35 seats. As exit polls have predicted, a close contest is expected in Kerala. The poll of polls has given a slight lead to the Congress-led United Democratic Front, which is projected to get around 70-75 seats, while the Left Democratic Front is projected to get around 60-65 seats. However, differing estimates from different agencies underline the uncertainty, with some even predicting a narrow victory for the LDF. In Puducherry, exit polls are suggesting a clear result, with the NDA projected to retain power in the 30-member assembly. Most estimates put the alliance in the range of 16-20 seats, while the Congress-DMK alliance is expected to trail with 6-8 seats. Smaller players including TVK may win some seats. Overall, the exit polls point to a mix of continuity and disruption with tight contests in key states and the potential for new political forces to change the established equations.

100% FDI allowed in insurance sector under automatic route, flow to LIC capped at 20%

100% FDI allowed in insurance sector under automatic route, flow to LIC capped at 20%

The central government on Saturday announced 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in insurance companies under the automatic route, allowing full foreign ownership in the sector. The move is expected to increase foreign participation in India’s insurance industry. Foreign investment in Indian insurance companies and intermediaries will now be permitted up to 100% of the paid-up equity capital, including investments by portfolio investors. In a press note, the Finance Ministry said, “Foreign investment up to one hundred per cent of the total paid-up equity of an Indian insurance company will be permitted on the automatic route subject to approval and verification by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.”This full foreign ownership will be allowed under the automatic route, but only after approval and verification by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).According to media reports, however, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will continue to follow a different rule, with foreign investment limited to 20% under the automatic route. In the note, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said foreign investment, including portfolio investors, will now be allowed in domestic insurance companies under the automatic route. The new rules have been brought in line with the Sabka Bima Sabka Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025. The Finance Ministry had earlier said that most parts of the law, except Section 25, would come into effect from February 5.The change comes after the legislative approval of the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha Bill, 2025, which was passed by Parliament in December 2025. The Bill paved the way for increasing the FDI limit in insurance from 74% to 100% under the automatic route. After receiving the assent of the President, the Bill becomes law, completing the legislative process required for implementation.Subsequently, in February 2026, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a notification allowing 100% FDI in the insurance sector, which has now been formalized by the Finance Ministry. However, inflows can be made under certain conditions: “The aggregate shareholding by way of foreign investment in equity shares of an Indian insurance company by foreign investors, including portfolio investors, is permitted up to one hundred per cent of the paid-up equity capital of such Indian insurance company,” the press note said.Insurance companies with foreign investment must ensure that at least one top role is the Chairman, Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer who is a resident Indian citizen.Any change in foreign ownership will also be required to comply with the pricing rules prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India under FEMA regulations. As per IRDAI rules, the 100% FDI limit will also apply to insurance intermediaries like brokers, reinsurance brokers, corporate agents, third party administrators, surveyors and loss assessors, managing general agents and insurance repositories.India had already allowed full foreign ownership in insurance intermediaries in 2020 and 20% FDI in LIC in 2022.Banks acting as insurance intermediaries will still comply with their core sector foreign investment rules, as long as their non-insurance income exceeds 50% of total revenues in a financial year. Majority foreign-owned companies in the sector will need to be set up as limited companies under the Companies Act, 2013.

Parmigiano Vault: How Italy’s ‘cheese banks’ power a €4 billion industry

Parmigiano Vault: How Italy's 'cheese banks' power a €4 billion industry

What are the most valuable assets for a country – gold, silver, currency? In Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, the answer looks much less traditional. Here, huge climate-controlled warehouses store one of the region’s most unusual forms of wealth: hundreds of thousands of wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, slowly aging and quietly becoming more valuable over time.To visitors, the buildings look like silent cheese cathedrals. For Italy’s dairy industry, they are a financial lifeline.Parmigiano Reggiano is a strictly controlled cheese. It can be made in a specific region of Italy using only three ingredients: milk, salt, and rennet. Each wheel must be at least 12 months old before being sold. According to CNN, many people are held for 24, 36 or 40 months. However, this long waiting period creates cash problems for producers. Farmers must be paid every month, and feed, labor and energy costs will continue daily. But cheese brings money only much later. To solve this, Credem Bank accepts cheese wheels as collateral for loans.Giancarlo Ravnetti, who manages the bank’s cheese warehouse business, told CNN, “About 4 million wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano are made in Italy, and we keep 500,000… and allow customers to use the wheels as collateral to obtain financing.” He said the system handles “about 2,300,000 wheels per year”, worth “about 325 million euros ($382 million) of Parmigiano Reggiano”.

Inside the Cheese Vault

When the wheels reach the warehouse, they are scanned and recorded in the digital system with details such as production date and origin. Only then are they placed on wooden shelves inside the large storage hall.Conditions in the warehouse are strictly controlled. Temperature, humidity and air flow are controlled. Employees check the wheels every day for cracks or damage. After 12 months, the Parmigiano Reggiano consortium conducts a tapping test, striking each wheel with a hammer to check its quality. Only passing wheels are marked with the official Fire-branded seal.Once approved, the wheels can be used as loan security. The warehouse serves as a guarantee that the cheese is present and in good condition. Ravnetti says the bank has run this system for more than 100 years without losing money. The Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium oversees the entire system. It consists of approximately 300 producers and more than 2,000 dairy farmers. Spokesman Fabrizio Raimondi said it represented a sector of “about 50,000 people” and “more than €4 billion in turnover”. The group checks quality, protects brands and prevents counterfeit products. “These sealers can reassure the consumer that it is genuine and the quality is good,” he says. Most producers work through cooperative societies. Paolo Ganzerli of Grantarre, an Italian cheesemaker, explained that while the system is important, it is also economically challenging. Grantarre is owned by producer cooperatives, so it must pay farmers quickly, even if income from the cheese comes much later.“Without this system of leverage, the world of Parmigiano Reggiano could not exist,” he said.Making cheese is also expensive. Cows must be fed locally grown food, and milk quality varies depending on the region. Costs have increased rapidly in recent years.“The cost of producing feed for cows, the cost of everything, has gone up a lot… Energy, transportation, logistics – everything is more expensive now,” Ganzerly said.

Increasing demand for Italian cheese

In 2025, exports of Parmigiano Reggiano overtook domestic sales for the first time, reaching 50.5% of total worldwide sales.International demand increased by 2.7%. There was an increase of 8.8% in Sweden, 7.8% in the UK and 2.5% in Spain. The United States, the largest export market, rose 2.3% but remains volatile due to new tariffs. “There is regulatory uncertainty and many operators are waiting before placing new orders,” Raimondi said.In Italy, sales are expected to decline 10% in 2025 as higher prices lead people to buy less. However, most families still continue to buy it. Prices rose strongly, with 12-month wheels reaching €13.22/kg and 24-month wheels reaching €15.59/kg. Production also increased to 4.19 million wheels.Ganzerli says the cheese is considered healthy because it is lactose-free, high in protein and has no additives. But he warns that if prices rise too high, people may turn to cheaper cheeses like Grana Padano.Manufacturers typically receive 60-80% of a wheel’s value in advance by using it as collateral. New blockchain systems now also allow cheese stored on farms to be used for credit. The consortium is also trying to boost tourism, aiming to increase visits from 85,000 to 300,000 by 2029.Parmigiano Reggiano is now a €4 billion industry supported by approximately 300 dairies. It depends on tradition, strict rules, and financial systems working together. In silent warehouses, wheels slowly age, turning time and patience into value.

Women Six-Pack Abs: Can women remain healthy by having six-pack abs? What science and doctors really say

Can women remain healthy even by having six-pack abs? What science and doctors really say
Women can get six-pack abs and stay healthy, but it depends on how they go about it.

Scroll through the fitness reels and one question comes up again and again, can women really have six-pack abs and still be healthy? Recently, Dr. Karan Rajan addressed this on Instagram and the clip shocked everyone. This challenged the common belief that visible abs in women always indicate excessive dieting or poor health. The truth sits somewhere in the middle, and it requires a closer look.

What does a six-pack really mean for women?

A six-pack is simply the result of muscle growth combined with lower body fat. That’s it. There is no separate “abs gene” or shortcut. However, for women, body fat plays a deeper role. Unlike men, adipose tissue is closely linked to hormone balance, especially estrogen. As Dr. Rajan explains, women naturally have more essential fat, about 10-13 percent, because the body needs it for basic functions like reproduction. To make abs attractive, most women have 14-20 percent fat in their body. This is still within the healthy range for many people. So yes, a woman can have defined abs and be completely healthy. But the path taken to get there matters more than the end result.

Healthy fat levels, proper nutrition and balanced training matter more than appearance. Excessive habits, not abs, are the real risk.

When fitness becomes imbalanced

Problems begin when body fat becomes too low or when the body is under constant stress.Dr. Rajan explains that extremely low body fat can reduce estrogen levels. In some cases, the brain slows down signals to the ovaries, which can prevent ovulation. This condition, medically known as hypothalamic amenorrhea, is not rare in athletes.A large review from the National Institutes of Health found that more than half of female athletes in some sports reported menstrual irregularities.Another concern is “low energy availability”, where calorie intake does not meet the body’s needs. This often happens with strict dieting, intense training, or both. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, weak bones, and mood changes.

Myth: Abs always mean unhealthy

This is where the conversation becomes more nuanced. Not every woman with visible abs is undernourished or overtrained. The distribution of fat in the body varies from person to person. Some women have more fat stored in the hips and thighs rather than the stomach. This allows abdominal definition to be visible even when overall body fat is within a healthy range. This is why the “six-pack equals unhealthy” idea doesn’t hold up. The real issue lies in excessive habits, not appearance.

So what’s a healthy baseline for women?

Health experts, including India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, recommend focusing on sustainable fitness rather than aesthetics.A balanced baseline often includes:

  • Regular activity: 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly
  • Strength training: at least 2-3 times a week
  • Adequate nutrition: enough calories to support activity levels
  • Stable menstrual cycle: a key indicator of hormonal health

If menstruation stops, energy decreases, or recovery is slow, the body is probably under stress, even if it “looks fit.”

Takeaway: It’s not the abs, it’s the attitude

Dr. Karan Rajan’s viral video cuts through the noise with a simple idea, the danger is often in the method, not the six-pack.Chasing a certain look through excessive dieting or rigorous workouts can harm the body. But gradually increasing strength, eating well, and getting rest can support both visible fitness and long-term health. So, can women still stay healthy by getting six-pack abs? Yes. But only when the body is supported, not pushed to its limits.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and does not replace professional medical advice.
