NASA recently transformed a retired Boeing 777 into a powerful aerial science laboratory: How a passenger jet became a flying laboratory for 100 scientists

NASA recently transformed a retired Boeing 777 into a powerful aerial science laboratory: How a passenger jet became a flying laboratory for 100 scientists

NASA’s Boeing 777 has returned to Langley Research Center in Virginia after major modifications that transformed it from a commercial passenger aircraft into a powerful aeroscience laboratory. The aircraft reportedly spent months in Waco, Texas, where engineers conducted extensive structural upgrades to prepare it for its new role. Its return marks an important step for NASA’s Airborne Science Program, which appears to expand its ability to study Earth from high altitudes. Scientists are already looking forward to upcoming missions that could provide deeper insights into weather patterns, climate systems, and atmospheric behavior. This aircraft is expected to play a central role in future research flights scheduled over the next few years.

NASA Boeing 777 Flying Lab upgraded for advanced scientific research missions

The Boeing 777 was originally a passenger aircraft, but has now been extensively re-engineered for scientific research. According to reports, major structural changes were made during its modification phase, including reinforced sections of the fuselage and redesigned internal systems. Engineers set up special research stations inside the cabin, allowing scientists to operate instruments directly during flight. The aircraft also features enlarged observation windows and open spaces in the lower fuselage. These modifications allow advanced sensors such as lidar and infrared imaging systems to collect data more effectively. It seems that the goal was to turn the aircraft into a fully integrated science platform rather than just a transport vehicle carrying instruments.

Why did NASA choose Boeing 777?

NASA previously relied on its DC-8 aircraft for airborne research missions, but that aircraft has now been retired after decades of service. The Boeing 777 appears to be its modern replacement, offering significantly more space, range and capacity. The aircraft can reportedly carry 50 to 100 personnel and approximately 75,000 pounds of scientific equipment. It is also capable of flying for up to 18 hours, giving researchers quite a long uninterrupted observation time. Experts suggest that this extended endurance is important for studying large-scale atmospheric systems that evolve over long distances and time periods.

Inside the plane: A reconfigured cabin for advanced climate research

Everything inside the airplane has changed as much as outside the airplane. The entire cabin has been modified to conduct scientific experiments inside the aircraft. The wiring inside the plane has been upgraded to accommodate the advanced equipment used by scientists inside the plane and many other research stations.Additionally, the modified aircraft enables faster response from onboard equipment when communicating with people on the ground. Thus, scientists will be able to make necessary adjustments during their work without first landing the aircraft.According to reports, NASA has decided to conduct its first scientific experiment using a Boeing 777. This mission will start in January 2027. It will be called NURTURE and is dedicated to the study of severe winter weather systems such as heavy snow, ice, strong winds and rough seas. The Boeing 777 will reportedly fly through various locations in North America, Europe, Greenland as well as the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.

How precision modifications enabled a new era of aerial research

The amendment process was actually very complex. First, engineers needed to ensure that the aircraft would be structurally safe, but would also include the necessary scientific functionality. For example, thousands of holes are drilled in the aircraft body to install the necessary equipment. In addition, large windows were added to facilitate visibility of sensors and other equipment. Reports indicate that structural modifications to the airplane were performed by companies such as L3Harris Technologies, while NASA focused on other components of the process. This system could allow researchers to track weather systems in real time over larger areas, which previous aircraft were able to do in less time. This new platform can also encourage collaboration between researchers from different countries during the same flight.Currently, the plane is parked in Langley waiting for its maiden voyage. Although the full scope of its development is still to be seen, there is a lot of anticipation among researchers who have been waiting for this platform for years.

IPL 2026: When will Hardik Pandya return from injury after being ruled out of MI vs LSG? Ryan Rickelton shares update on captaincy

Hardik Pandya’s absence raises concerns ahead of Mumbai Indians’ clash against Lucknow Super Giants, with the MI captain set to miss another IPL 2026 game. As the tournament enters a crucial phase, the all-rounder’s fitness has now become a new concern for the franchise.

In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav steps in to lead MI, This is the second time this season that Pandya has missed a game. Although MI did not provide complete clarity initially, the situation became clear as updates emerged during and after the match.

MI vs LSG: highlighted | Achievement:

Speaking after MI’s win, opening batsman Ryan Rickelton admitted that even the players were not fully aware of the severity of the issue.

“I don’t know when he’s expected to be back. I found out this afternoon that he has back spasms, so I’m unaware of the severity of it. I don’t want to call it an injury; I’m unaware of how bad it is or what he’s feeling. But I’m sure he’ll be with the group again when we go to Raipur this week,” Rickelton said.

The update suggests that although the injury is not being considered a long-term setback, there is still no definite timeline for Pandya’s return.

Why didn’t Hardik Pandya play MI vs LSG?

Mumbai Indians confirmed before the match that Pandya was unavailable due to back spasms.

The issue reportedly came to light closer to the game, with MI stating that the all-rounder was “unwell”, leading to Suryakumar taking over the captaincy duties. This was the second match that Pandya has missed this season, before which he sat out the match against Delhi Capitals.

Back spasms, although not always serious, can be difficult to manage, especially for an all-rounder who contributes with both bat and ball. As things stand, Mumbai Indians are expected to take a cautious approach before sending their captain back into the playing eleven.

How did MI beat LSG?

Despite missing their captain, MI produced one of their most complete performances of the season.

LSG made a strong score of 228 runs for 5 wickets with the help of Nicholas Pooran’s 63 runs on 21 balls, Mitchell Marsh’s 44 runs and Himmat Singh’s unbeaten 40 runs.

However, MI made light work of the chase.

A strong partnership of 143 runs between Ryan Rickelton (83 runs off 32 balls) and Rohit Sharma (84 runs off 44 balls) put the game away early. Even a slight glitch in the middle overs didn’t manage to derail the target and MI reached 229 with eight balls to spare.

The win helped MI break their losing streak, but with the team still placed ninth with three wins from ten matches, getting Pandya back fit could be crucial for any final push. IPL 2026.

Center tightens fire safety norms for hospitals, makes audit and evacuation plans mandatory

New Delhi: Aiming to prevent deadly fires in hospitals, the Union Health Ministry has issued revised national guidelines, mandating strict safety checks, regular audits and clear evacuation protocols in healthcare facilities. The National Guidelines on Fire and Life Safety in Healthcare Facilities (2026) set out a comprehensive framework for how hospitals should prevent, detect and respond to fire incidents, with a strong focus on patient safety – especially in the ICU and other critical care units such as NICU, PICU and operation theaters that cannot evacuate on their own.The revised guidelines go beyond the earlier building-level norms by introducing a hospital-specific safety framework with clear accountability, mandatory risk audits and detailed evacuation protocols for critical care areas – gaps that were not previously addressed similarly.Guidelines issued With nationwide emphasis on fire safety, the Center observed Fire Safety Week from May 4 to 10 and urged states and health facilities to reassess preparedness, conduct audits and strengthen response systems. The document states that hospitals are particularly vulnerable due to high oxygen usage, complex electrical systems and immobile patients, with electrical faults identified as the leading cause of fires in health care settings.Under the new framework, hospitals will have to conduct regular fire risk assessments, maintain a fire safety plan and conduct annual fire and electrical safety audits. Facilities are also required to classify ICU, NICU, PICU, operation theatres, oxygen storage areas and electrical rooms as high-risk areas, requiring strict monitoring. The guidelines state that each hospital should appoint a dedicated fire safety officer and form a fire safety committee responsible for preparedness, training and coordination with local fire services. Employees will undergo regular training and mock drills to ensure preparedness during emergencies. The main focus is early detection and quick response, with hospitals required to install and maintain fire alarms, sprinklers, hydrant systems and smoke control mechanisms, supported by round-the-clock monitoring.Given the risks involved in moving critically ill patients, detailed evacuation protocols prioritize horizontal evacuation – moving patients to safe areas on the same floor. As part of building a safety culture in healthcare facilities, officials have also emphasized strong compliance, including regular reporting of fire safety audits and extensive awareness efforts. Its purpose is to streamline preparedness, reduce the risk of major incidents, and ensure continuity of care during emergencies.

Gujarat Krishna Bull: Meet Krishna: a bull from Gujarat credited with producing 80% of Brazil’s milk production since 1960.

Meet Krishna: A bull from Gujarat credited with producing 80% of Brazil's milk production since 1960

A jingle from the 90s said, “Doodh hai adamav, peesha kar karte hai everyday glass full”, in which most of the people of India drank milk like fine wine in different combinations. Dairy and especially milk has an important history in the Indian subcontinent, not only in terms of consumption but also production. It is the world’s largest milk producer, contributing about 24% to 25% of global milk production.Along with maintaining its excellent dairy production system, India has also helped other countries in their dairy sectors. The earliest example of this comes in the form of a bull that traveled from Gujarat, India to Brazil.

Krishna: Bull

According to the BBC, it was the year 1958 when Brazilian cattle trader Celso Garcia Cid sent cowboy Ildefonso dos Santos to India with the aim of finding a bull that could increase Brazil’s livestock.Sid was looking at pictures when his eyes fell on a calf named Krishna. His coat was red and white and his horns hung downwards. The cattle dealer immediately ordered the purchase of the strong bull, which arrived in the country two years later.During that time, the shepherd described Krishna as “a giant of a man”. He said, “Nothing can be inferred from what has been said about this animal – it is a giant creature.”However, instead of being purchased, Krishna was gifted to the cowboys by Krishna Kumarsinhji Bhavsinhji, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar and the first Indian Governor of Madras.

Indian bull behind Brazilian milk production

Krishna’s arrival proved extremely beneficial to Brazilian cattle and dairy. They brought about a genetic revolution in the country’s cattle market and now, their lineage makes up 80% of Brazil’s milk production. In India, Krishna helped increase the value of the Gir breed, which is now considered one of the most valuable breeds in the bovine embryo market. In recent years, this breed almost became extinct in the country due to failed crossbreeding attempts and the government sought help from Brazil to import this breed back to India.According to Guilherme Sachetim, the shepherd’s grandson, the Krishnas were a turning point in the history of livestock farming in Brazil. “They renewed the bloodline of the national dairy cattle at a time when inbreeding was holding back productivity,” he said. Not just Krishna, it is believed that the Maharaja of Bhavnagar visited the shepherd’s farm in Sertanopolis and before his death, left all his cows to him, thereby deepening the friendship that is remembered even today.

Where is Krishna now?

Krishna was much more than a bull. She left a legacy of her own in Brazil, changing the future of the country with healthy milk. After she died, Sid placed her body in a glass coffin and preserved it in the farmhouse, where it remains to this day. A sign that someone had pressed between Krishna’s toes read: “Want to meet Gir? Keep an eye on me!” Additionally, Krishna also received tribute to the country’s White Revolution, with his image appearing on stamps and coins.Today, a strong Brazilian Gir can produce up to 20 liters of milk per day. This is ten times more than the original cattle brought into the country nearly a century ago.
