An Indian-origin father has died in a tragic two-vehicle crash while working a late evening Uber shift in New Zealand, leaving his family devastated.Ramandeep Dhillon, 36, of Papamoa, died on Wednesday when the vehicle he was traveling in crashed on the Te Puke Highway between Bell Road and Poplar Lane about 7.15pm.Police said one person died at the scene, while two people in the other vehicle were injured. He told them he would return later for dinner, but never came back.Concern grew when he stopped answering calls, before police arrived in the night to inform his wife of his death.“I cried, I cried, I cried. I thought my life was ruined,” Kaur told the NZ Herald.Dhillon was born in Punjab, India and moved to New Zealand in 2015 on a student visa. He later returned to India in 2024 to marry Kaur after being introduced through family connections.After their marriage, the couple settled in Papamoa, Bay of Plenty, where he worked in kiwifruit orchards, Dhillon later began driving for Uber to support the family and spend more time at home after the birth of their daughter.Kaur said the job allowed him to be closer to his child, and expressed how excited he was to become a father.“He was very excited when he found out he was going to be a father,” she told the NZ Herald.The couple named their daughter Kudrat, which means “nature.” Since his death, the girl has been constantly asking where her father is.Friends and family described Dhillon as a devoted husband and father who always prioritized spending time with his daughter, even during work breaks.A close friend told the NZ Herald, “If he missed his daughter, he would come home, spend time with her and then go back to work.”His best friend of 12 years, Gurlabh Singh, said Dhillon was a positive and caring person who supported those around him, including picking him up from the airport when he first arrived in New Zealand.The GiveLittle page set up for the family has raised thousands of dollars to help cover funeral costs, rent and living expenses as Kaur and her daughter face life without her.

Chennai: About half of the biomining work at the Perungudi dumpyard has been completed, and a new composting facility at the site is expected to be ready by June 30.GCC Commissioner Dr GS Sameeran said the biomining project in the 225-acre dumpyard, started in 2021 at a cost of ₹350 crore, has so far reclaimed 94 acres of land. The dumpyard has been divided into six remediation packages, of which packages 3, 4 and 5 have been completed. He directed the officials to expedite the remaining works under the second phase.The second phase of the project costing ₹53.6 crore involves processing of 5.5 lakh cubic meters of old waste. The reclaimed site is also being prepared for new waste-processing infrastructure, with construction of a 100 tonne per day capacity compost plant expected to be completed by June 30.Residents groups said the progress of work has been delayed due to the long-running dispute. There was a two-year arbitration issue involving a contractor, and after a long delay, work resumed, said A Francis, president of the Federation of Thoraipakkam Residents Welfare Associations. “For the last two years, officials have been saying that work is in progress. There is some fencing activity near the Ramsar site. Officials should ensure that the site is safe from dumping and encroachment,” he said.Waste management experts said the compost plant can help only if source separation is improved. The new composting facility in Perungudi is a positive step and is better than relying on large-scale mixed-waste processing plants, where waste is incinerated, making the process more toxic, said Geo Damin, a former state solid waste management committee member. “Decentralized systems are more secure and more sustainable,” he said, adding that such facilities, however, can function effectively only if door-to-door collection and source separation are properly implemented. “Without household-level separation, even composting plants will struggle to operate efficiently,” he said.

New Delhi: The Education Ministry on Sunday said it has directed IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur to assist the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in resolving technical issues on the post-result service portal following widespread complaints from students and parents over irregularities in the revaluation process.According to the PIB press release, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has asked to deploy a team of professors and technical experts from both the IITs to CBSE to ensure a smooth and reliable system. The statement said, “In view of the recent developments and concerns raised by students and parents regarding the CBSE Post-Result Services Portal, Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has directed to deploy a team of professors and technical experts from Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur to assist the Central Board of Secondary Education in ensuring ‘glitch-free revaluation process’.It said that this step has been taken after reports of technical challenges in the CBSE Post Examination Services portal.It further added that expert teams will focus on system upgrades and technical workflows including portal stability, server performance, authentication processes, user access systems and payment gateways. They will also check the overall IT infrastructure strength and assist in corrective measures.“Expert teams will implement focused technical improvements of systems and technical workflows and specifically check portal stability and server performance. The team will also check the robustness of the overall IT infrastructure and assist in taking corrective measures to ensure that login authentication/user access systems/payment gateways are accurate and in order.”It also reiterated that student welfare is a priority and all necessary corrective measures need to be taken on priority by CBSE to ensure a transparent, efficient and student-friendly system.The move comes amid growing concerns over the CBSE post-result service portal, with many Class 12 students complaining of repeated glitches, login failures and disruptions while accessing scanned answer sheets and applying for revaluation.Students and parents have also raised concerns over fluctuations in fees on the portal, with screenshots circulating online claiming huge variations in fees for obtaining answer sheets and revaluation services, with in some cases drastically changing within a matter of hours.CBSE has said that the website is facing heavy traffic and attempts at “unauthorized interference” causing disruption. The board has also extended the deadline to access scanned copies of answer sheets and apply for verification and revaluation.“The CBSE website has been experiencing unprecedented traffic for the past few days and has also faced several attempts at unauthorized interference, increasing the possibility of disruption,” the board said.The controversy has created widespread concern among students, many of whom are also preparing for competitive exams like JEE. NEET And CUET, amid ongoing uncertainty over the evaluation process.

Motihari: Daya Tiwari alias Sushil Tiwari, the leader of the international fake currency gang operating on the India-Nepal border, was arrested by a joint team of Army Intelligence Unit Lucknow, STF and local police near Motihari on Sunday. He was evading arrest for the last six months.East Champaran Superintendent of Police (SP) Swarn Prabhat said the arrest has dealt a major blow to the international fake currency gang operating on the India-Nepal border.According to STF sources, Daya is the son of Mahendra Tiwari and is a resident of Khairwa in Sitamarhi district. A press note issued by the STF said that Rs 4,050 in cash and a mobile phone were recovered from Daya’s possession.A case was registered against him under various sections of the IPC on February 1, 2026 at Haraiya police station in East Champaran.Police said that on January 31, eight suppliers of fake currency, including a Nepali national, were arrested and fake Nepalese currency worth Rs 25 lakh and fake Indian currency worth Rs 18,500 were recovered from them. Police also recovered 12 mobile phones, passports, a bike, papers used in making fake notes and other equipment.All the arrested people said in their statement to the police that Daya was the kingpin of the racket and they were working for him. They said he operated from Bangladesh, Nepal and various Indian states. He also said that Daya was involved in printing, supplying and circulating fake currency notes for a long time.The SP said that the Army’s intelligence unit and STF were closely monitoring his activities and he was arrested on the basis of technical surveillance and intelligence.SP said that during interrogation, Daya made many important revelations related to the fake note network. On the basis of information received from him, other members of the gang are being identified.

An Indian man with a lengthy criminal record has been arrested by US immigration officials in Los Angeles and may now face deportation proceedings, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.ICE said Parminderpal Singh, 26, a citizen of India, was arrested this week and is in immigration detention pending removal from the United States.Authorities said Singh’s criminal history includes crimes including vehicle theft, grand theft, trespassing and vandalism. In recent years, many Indian nationals have faced detention or deportation proceedings by ICE under a variety of circumstances, including criminal convictions, visa violations, and outdated immigration orders.One of the most famously discussed cases involved Subramaniam Vedam, who spent 43 years in a Pennsylvania prison in a murder case that was later overturned. In 2025, ICE took him into custody shortly after his release due to a separate decades-old deportation order tied to an earlier drug conviction. Vedam had lived in the US since childhood and faced possible deportation to India.Another case involved 53-year-old interpreter Meenu Batra, who had been living in the US for more than three decades. He was detained by ICE during a work trip in Texas in 2026 after authorities cited an old deportation order despite having legal work authorization and humanitarian protection status. He was later released after legal intervention and after a judge questioned his detention.US authorities have also deported Indian citizens convicted of financial crimes. In 2025, Angad Singh Chandhok was deported to India after serving a prison sentence in an international technical-assistance scam targeting elderly Americans. He helped operate shell companies that were used to launder millions of dollars obtained through fraud.In another recent case, Aman Kumar was arrested by ICE in California in 2026 after authorities released him following a hit-and-run incident involving a four-year-old child. ICE alleged that Kumar was living in the country illegally at the time of his arrest outside the Fresno courthouse.

New Delhi: The BJP won the repoll in Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal, with its candidate Debangshu Panda securing more than a lakh votes than his nearest rival as counting took place on Sunday for the repoll held on May 21.Click here for live updates
According to the Election Commission (ECI) website, after all 22 rounds of counting, Panda got 149,666 votes, while Sambhu Nath Kurmi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) stood second with 40,645 votes.With this victory, BJP’s tally returned to 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. The party had originally won 207 seats too, but Suvendu Adhikari – now the state’s first BJP chief minister – vacated his Nandigram seat and retained Bhabanipur, where he had defeated his predecessor as chief minister, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee.Falta’s victory would be icing on the cake for the BJP, not only because it was a TMC-dominated constituency but also because of the events leading up to this victory.‘Diamond Harbor Model’ collapsedFalta constituency falls under the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha seat in South 24 Parganas district. TMC won Falta in three consecutive assembly elections (2011, 2016 and 2021), while Diamond Harbor is represented in the Lok Sabha by the party’s number two Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Mamata Banerjee, who has won three consecutive general elections from the constituency (2014, 2019 and 2024).Abhishek secured 40% votes in 2014, followed by 56% and 68% votes respectively in the next two elections.On 2 May, two days before the counting of votes in West Bengal, he challenged the “Union of India” to “make a dent in my Diamond Harbor model too”.Abhishek had also allegedly given provocative speeches during the campaign.After Trinamool’s defeat, the new BJP-led government has reduced their security cover. He claimed that he quit after the CM official assured him of a “special package” for the constituency.However, the announcement came amid FIRs lodged against Khan, prompting him to move the Calcutta High Court seeking and obtaining protection from arrest. The move came just two days after the officer commented that he would “personally handle” Khan’s case.Despite Khan’s “withdrawal”, his name remained on the voting machines, as the deadline for withdrawal of nominations had already passed.“Pushpa” stood fourth in the repoll, receiving only 7,783 votes in the six-person contest, excluding the NOTA (None of the Above) option.Why was re-polling conducted?In the second and final phase of the election, on 29 April, the ECI ordered re-polling at all 285 polling stations in Falta over allegations of large-scale irregularities. Tapes in the names of BJP candidates were found stuck on the voting machines at many booths.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) is expected to release the provisional answer key for West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination 2026 soon on its official website. wjeeb.nic.in. Challenge window will be open for a limited period

The examination board has clarified that candidates will be allowed to raise objections against the provisional answer keys during a specified period. However, the objection facility will remain active only for a limited period after the release of the answer key.Students challenging any response will have to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs 500 per question along with applicable bank service charges. The board will examine all the objections before preparing the final answer key.Officials have said that the final answer key will be considered binding, and the WBJEE 2026 result will be prepared strictly on the basis of the revised and final responses. The Board has also made it clear that no further communication regarding challenges will be entertained after the review process is over.

OMR response sheets will be uploaded online

Apart from the answer keys, the board is also expected to release scanned images of OMR sheets and machine-recorded responses of the candidates for a short period. Candidates will be able to access these documents through their login credentials.Students are advised to download and preserve copies of their response sheets for future reference, as access may not be available indefinitely after the scheduled deadline is over.

Rank card to carry sectional and overall scores

WBJEE 2026 result will be declared in the form of a rank card containing detailed performance data of the candidates. The scorecard is expected to include the overall marks along with the rank obtained in the examination, component scores in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.After the declaration of the result candidates have to log in to the portal using their password to download the final rank card.
