Mayor of US city fires entire police department for harassing his wife, says he won’t withhold pay
The mayor of a small town in Georgia, America, fired the entire police department for harassing his wife.
The mayor of a small town in Georgia has fired the entire police department for harassing his wife after she wrote some offensive comments on social media about his wife, who worked for the city council. However, Mayor Ron Shinick says he was simply making a reshuffle like changing a team’s coach.“It’s a guy thing. You know, sometimes, in college football programs, you have to change coaches, and some guys like it, some don’t. And sometimes that’s just the way it is, you know?” The mayor said.Cohutta is a small town in Georgia, with a population of about 1000.WDEF reported that police department officials had a problem with the mayor’s wife, Pam Shinnick, because she continued to work for the city council after she was fired due to the poisoning. After those allegations surfaced, Mayor Ron Shinnick and city attorney Brian Rayburn held a press conference where all parties agreed to a resolution through open dialogue and good-faith mediation. While the resolution is now known, a notice was posted on the door of the Cohutta Police Department on Wednesday that read: “The PD has been disbanded, and all personnel have been terminated.”The representatives were expected to handle law enforcement services for the city.“They’ll get a raise. That’s not who we are, and I appreciate their service, okay? It’s time for a change,” Mayor Shinick said after firing the entire police department. The former officials said they would not release any department equipment until proper procedures were followed.“We have to return all the equipment, and right now, there is no legal city employee here to sign that they are receiving this equipment. If a gun or anything like that goes missing it is a felony. We will not turn it over to anyone. It will remain in our possession until someone is there to pick it up,” said one.

Italian Open: Iga Swiatek escapes major upset against Katie McNally, but French Open concerns remain
Iga Swiatek was not at her best, but still managed to defeat world No. 63 Katie McNally in the round of 64 at the Italian Open, overcoming a small second set deficit to reach the next round. The Polish star faced many difficult moments during the competition, but her experience and patience ultimately helped her win 6-1,6-7(5), 6-3.
Swiatek started the match impressively, directing rallies from the baseline and repeatedly pushing McNally to the back of the court with heavy topspin forehands. He won the opening set 6–1, breaking the American several times and barely allowing his opponent to gain any momentum. McNally initially struggled to deal with Swiatek’s depth and consistency, especially during longer rallies.

McNally makes Swiatek work hard
However, the second set turned into a much tighter contest. McNally raised his level significantly by attacking the net more often and taking advantage of some of Swiatek’s loose moments. The American’s aggressive approach paid off as he won the set 7-6 in a tense tiebreak, changing the momentum of the contest somewhat.
Despite the setback, Swiatek responded with maturity in the deciding set. He immediately regained control by improving the accuracy of the first serve and reducing his unforced errors. Swiatek won 54 percent of the total points in the match and converted six break points in crucial moments, underscoring her superiority.
McNally fought hard throughout the match, but Swiatek’s experience and consistency on clay ultimately proved decisive. Swiatek will next face the winner of the match between Emma Navarro and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
svitek is fighting hard
The former world No. 1 has endured an unusually difficult clay-court season by her lofty standards, struggling to rediscover the dominance that once made her virtually unbeatable on the surface. She arrived on clay in early 2026 after inconsistent results and failed to build momentum during the European swing.
Her struggles reached a painful point at the Madrid Open, where she was forced to retire during her third-round tie against Ann Li. Swiatek lost the first set 7-6(4), bounced back to win the second set 6-2, but was trailing 0-3 in the deciding set when she decided she could no longer continue.
The Polish star was visibly distressed, sought medical attention during the match and eventually left the court in tears. With the French Open approaching, Swiatek will now hope to recapture the form that once helped her win a hat-trick of Roland Garros titles.

‘I wouldn’t even pay for it’: Donald Trump criticizes World Cup ticket prices so high fans will have to pay to attend | international sports news
donald trump After learning how expensive tickets have become for supporters, he admitted that he would not personally pay $1,000 (£736) to attend a United States match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, begins on June 11, 2026 and will be the first men’s World Cup to be held in North America since 1994, as well as the first edition to feature an expanded 48-team format. The United States are scheduled to open their campaign against the Paraguay national football team on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with kick-off scheduled for spectators in the United Kingdom on the morning of June 13. talking to New York Post, Trump was told that tickets for the match were currently being sold for about $1,000. “I didn’t know that number,” Trump said. “I would definitely love to live there, but honestly I wouldn’t even pay it.”
Trump says working-class supporters should still be able to participate
Trump later expressed concern that ordinary supporters could be barred from attending matches during the tournament. “If the people of Queens and Brooklyn and all the people who love Donald Trump can’t go, I will be disappointed,” he said. “But, you know, at the same time, it’s an amazing success. “I would like the people who voted for me to be able to go.”

Trump has frequently highlighted his role in helping bring the World Cup to the United States during his first presidential term. The 2026 tournament will be played in a total of 16 venues, with 11 stadiums located in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. Also read: World Cup final seat listed for $11.5 million despite being one of the worst stadiums
FIFA defends prices amid growing criticism
The price of tickets has become one of the defining issues surrounding the 2026 World Cup after FIFA released sales details for the first time earlier this year. Group-stage tickets are now priced partly based on the popularity of the teams involved, rather than the flat-rate structure used in previous tournaments. Supporter groups and fans have heavily criticized the prices, with some describing them as “extortionate”.

Donald Trump’s comments came just hours after Gianni Infantino defended the ticket prices, which have sparked huge controversy in the United States and around the world. Speaking at a conference in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, the FIFA president said the location of the 2026 FIFA World Cup justifies the higher prices. “We have to look at the market – we are in the market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world,” Infantino said. Earlier in the week, Infantino also argued that many World Cup tickets were still priced compared to major American sporting events. “We have 25 percent off tickets for the group stage that can be purchased for less than $300,” he said. “You can’t go see a college game in America for less than $300, let alone a top professional game at a certain level. And this is the World Cup.” According to Infantino, more than 500 million ticket requests were submitted during the early voting stage for matches throughout the tournament.
Final ticket resale prices reach extraordinary levels
Although some official ticket prices were later reduced following protests over affordability, attention has increasingly shifted to the resale market. The World Cup final will take place on July 19, 2026, at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. According to reports, the average price of a ticket for the final is currently around $13,000, while it is around $1,600 for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Last month, four tickets for the final were listed online for a staggering $2.3 million (£1.69 million). Infantino responded to those listings with a mixture of humor and criticism. He joked that he would personally offer “a hot dog and a Coke” to anyone willing to pay that amount before addressing the broader resale situation more seriously. “If some people put some tickets for the final on the resale market for $2 million, number one, it doesn’t mean the tickets are worth $2 million, and number two, it doesn’t mean anyone will buy these tickets,” he said. “In the US, reselling of tickets is also allowed, so if you sell tickets at a very low price, these tickets will be resold at a much higher price. “And in fact, even though some people are saying that we have higher ticket prices, they still go for even higher prices on the resale market, more than double our price.”
FIFA still makes money from resale transactions
Although FIFA does not directly regulate the prices set by sellers on resale platforms, The Guardian reported that the governing body still receives a fee from each official resale transaction. According to the report, FIFA charges a 15 percent fee from the buyer and 15 percent from the seller for tickets sold through official resale channels. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to run from June 11 through the final on July 19, with matches taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Hindutva mascot, former TMC insider: 5 reasons why BJP chose Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal CM india news
New Delhi: The emergence of Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP’s choice for the chief ministerial post in West Bengal comes after years of establishing himself as the party’s strongest anti-Mamata Banerjee face in the state. From defeating the Trinamool Congress supremo in his own den to leading the BJP’s aggressive Hindutva-driven campaign, Adhikari has steadily emerged as the saffron party’s strongest leader in Bengal. Adhikari’s stature within the party was further strengthened by the BJP’s landslide victory in the state, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly and ending TMC’s 15-year rule. His electoral success, grassroots influence, insider understanding of TMC and ability to consolidate anti-Trinamool votes ultimately made him the natural choice of the BJP leadership to lead its first government in West Bengal.
Giant killer: The man who defeated Mamata twice in her own stronghold
The biggest reason behind BJP choosing Suvendu Adhikari as the face of its first government in West Bengal is his landslide victory. Mamata Banerjee In Bhabanipur, a constituency long considered the political stronghold of the Trinamool Congress supremo. Defeating a sitting chief minister on his home turf gave Adhikari unmatched political weight within the BJP and he instantly emerged as the party’s strongest leader in the state.A former close aide of Mamata Banerjee who later defected to the BJP, Adhikari emerged as the most aggressive anti-TMC face of the saffron party in Bengal. In the high-stakes Bhabanipur contest, he secured 73,917 votes against Mamata Banerjee’s 58,812, defeating her by a margin of 15,105 votes, making it the closest battle of the election. The result has immense symbolic significance as Bhabanipur is historically deeply associated with Mamata Banerjee’s political identity. Located in the Kolkata district and part of the Kolkata South parliamentary constituency, the seat has long been considered one of the safest strongholds of the Trinamool Congress. After losing to Adhikari in Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections, Mamata returned to the assembly later that year by easily winning the Bhabanipur bypoll with over 65,000 votes. For the BJP leadership, Adhikari’s victory proved that he is capable of directly challenging Mamata Banerjee in areas where the opposition has traditionally struggled, not once, but twice.
No option, at least for now
Although there were a few contenders for the top post, there was no one who could come close to Adhikari, at least for now. Although several BJP leaders strengthened their positions in the elections, none matched Adhikari’s electoral impact. His victory in both Nandigram and Bhawanipur established him as the party’s strongest anti-TMC face and a leader capable of directly challenging Mamata Banerjee.Agnimitra Paul retained the Asansol South assembly seat by defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Tapas Banerjee by over 40,000 votes, further cementing her position as one of the rising leaders of the BJP in Bengal. Senior leader Dilip Ghosh also won from Kharagpur Sadar assembly constituency, reasserting his hold within the party organisation. However, despite the presence of leaders like Paul and Ghosh, the BJP leadership could not find anyone who could match Adhikari’s ground influence, organizational control and political stature in Bengal. Although there were a few contenders for the top job, no one came close to being the official – at least for now.
Insider on TMC playbook
The BJP also sees Suvendu Adhikari as a leader who understands the Trinamool Congress from the inside, having spent more than two decades within the party before switching sides in 2020.Adhikari started his political career with the Congress and became a councilor in Kanthi Municipality in 1995 before joining the Trinamool Congress in 1998. Over the years, he emerged as one of the most influential grassroots organizers of the party and played a key role in the Nandigram land movement against the Left Front government in 2007, a movement that ultimately helped Mamata Banerjee come to power in Bengal. He became Lok Sabha MP from Tamluk in 2009 and retained the seat in 2014 before returning to state politics as a Trinamool MLA from Nandigram in 2016 and a cabinet minister in the Mamata Banerjee government. His long association with TMC gave him deep knowledge of the party’s organizational structure, electoral strategies and voter networks. After quitting TMC and joining BJP in December 2020, Adhikari soon became the saffron party’s sharpest weapon against Mamata Banerjee. His victory in Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections further strengthened his stature and ultimately made him the leader of the opposition in West Bengal.
Hindutva appeal that matches BJP’s core politics
Another major factor behind the rise of Suvendu Adhikari as the chief ministerial face of the BJP was his ability to consolidate Hindu votes, a strategy that closely matches with the BJP’s broader political identity and electoral vision in Bengal. After winning in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, Adhikari openly credited Hindu voters for his victory, especially in Nandigram where he defeated TMC candidate Pabitra Kar by 9,665 votes. “This time I won the election by about ten thousand votes. The Hindu people of Nandigram made me win again. The entire Muslim vote there went to TMC. I will work for the Hindus of Nandigram,” ANI quoted Adhikari as saying a day after the assembly election results. For the BJP leadership, Adhikari’s success strengthened the party’s belief that he could emerge as the central face of Hindu solidarity in Bengal politics. His aggressive attacks on TMC, coupled with strong messaging around ideology and identity politics, resonated with the BJP’s core support base in the state.
assertive aggressive leader
The emergence of Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP’s choice for chief minister was also driven by his image as the party’s most vocal and aggressive opposition leader in West Bengal, a politician who consistently fought Mamata Banerjee and the TMC directly, both politically and ideologically.Throughout the campaign, Adhikari projected himself as the BJP’s strongest Hindutva voice in the state. From leading Ramnavmi rallies in Bhawanipur and calling for “Ram Rajya” in Bengal to openly crediting Hindu voters for his victory, he aligned himself with the core ideological message of the BJP. He has repeatedly attacked TMC on issues of infiltration, minority appeasement and law and order and has established himself as the face of the aggressive anti-TMC movement. After the election results, his fighting style became even more visible. The BJP’s landslide victory, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly while the TMC was reduced to 80 seats after ruling Bengal for 15 years, further cemented Adhikari’s stature as the undisputed face of the party in the state.

How the experience of Operation Sindoor is reshaping the Indian armed forces
India was forced to launch Operation Sindoor as a punitive action in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people in a cold blooded manner. The 88-hour long operation demonstrated the unique ability of the Indian armed forces to start and end an armed conflict against a nuclear armed power. During the Eastern Ladakh crisis too, by securing the Helmet Top feature on the Kailash range in August 2020, forcing China’s hand at the negotiating table. Making India the only country to dominate the escalation ladder against two nuclear armed rivals. The Operation demonstrated India’s ability to hit any target across Pakistan. During the first few minutes of the Operation, India was able to hit targets separated over 500 kms longitudinally ranging from mountainous Muzzafarabad in the north to arid Bahawalpur in the south nearly simultaneously. As the conflict moved up on the escalation ladder, the Indian armed forces struck targets ranging from a Surface-to-Air Missile battery in Karachi, on the shores of the Arabian Sea, to a critical bunker at the Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, near the foothills of the Himalayas (Margala), while at the same time leaving a mark at some of the most crucial air bases and radar locations across Pakistan.Pakistan too tried to hit Indian air bases and take out the crucial S-400 Triumpf air defence complex with a supersonic CM-400AKG supersonic missile. This missile was shot down before ot could reach its target. Pakistani missile fired at other air bases, a long range fired towards Delhi was also intercepted by a Medium Range-Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM), negating Pakistan’s offensive efforts. Although one Pakistani projectile did land at the Indian Air Force air strip in Udhampur. The four day operation demonstrated India’s conventional superiority over Pakistan, but there is also need to strengthen defences as the nature of warfare is changing. In Operation Sindoor although the air defence network was the toast of the town, there are still efforts to improve the system especially in light of the threat posed by drones and missiles.
Air Defence
India has embarked on a journey to produce its own system similar to the Israeli Iron Dome, called Mission Sudarshan Chakra. The system is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The project was announced by the Prime Minister during his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, just months after the kinetic phase of Operation Sindoor ended. The upcoming system is a layered air defence system, which will be capable of firing interceptor missiles at ranges of 350 km, 250 km and 150 km. The first phase of this system is expected to be ready by 2029. DRDO has been testing parts of this system since August of 2025. Besides missiles of different ranges, the overall architecture of the system will also be able add directed energy weapons such as high powered lasers. The Indian Air Force is likely to get the fourth S-400 system in the next few months and the fifth contracted system by the end of the year. The fourth system is expected to be deployed on the western front, the first of these missile systems is deployed in Punjab and the second system is deployed in northern Gujarat, while the third system is deployed in the eastern sector. There is also a strong effort to improve the capability of the armed forces agaisnt drones. Efforts are underway to take down these unmanned system using a varierty of ways ranging from specific missile systems such as the Bhargavastra missile system developed by Solar industries. The army is also looking to procure ammunition for 40mm, 30mm and 23mm guns. Efforts are also underway to use new age methods such as electromagnetic systems, lasers and radio frequency jammers to take on drones. The importance of a robust system was demonstrated by the air force and the army during Op Sindoor. The ill effects of having such a system was demonstrated in West Asia, when Iranian missiles and drones were able to hit vital targets in a wide arc ranging from Oman in the east to Israel in the west.
Harnessing drone power
Drones have shown their utility in recent conflicts. The armed forces, once known as slow to adapt, are now quick to realign with the latest in technology. The armed forces are now imbibing the latest in drone technology, even as the field is evolving at a very fast pace. The army is procuring drones for different types of purposes such as attack, reconnaissance and logistics, among other uses. The armed forces are procuring different types of systems ranging from small First Person View (FPV) drones to pseudo satellites that will fly at super high altitudes, powered by the sun.The army is also rechanging internal structures to use these systems more effectively, with the induction of Ashni platoons for the infantry and Divyastra batteries and Shaktiban regiments for its artillery arm. The army is also looking at raising Shaurya squadrons for its armoured regiments.
Drone and unmanned technologies have added a new dimension to firepower delivery. It is novel, flexible and devastatingly effective at least cost. Drones, specially Loitering Munitions tech advances in precision, propulsion, warhead and other technologies have made ground based long range firepower extremely competitive in cost, effort and effect. Loitering systems will increasingly be in greater demand. Overall, they complement missile systems admirably to execute deep strikes with precision. As time passes, drones will become faster and the current rotary engines will be replaced by jet engines.Lt General PR Shankar (Retd), Former Director General, Artillery
Rocket force
The Indian army chief earlier this year, spoke about the requirement of a rocket-cum-missile force. The Indian army is now seeking its own rocket-cum-missile force. The advantage of having such a force would be that the forces will be able to send a long range vector deep inside enemy territory without risking fighter aircraft or other expensive platforms. The Pakistanis during Operation Sindoor attempted to hit targets deep inside India with Fatah-II rockets, which was intercepted over Sirsa. India too used long range missiles very effectively during the operation. Various Pakistani airbases and the Pakistani early warning radar system was destroyed by long range missile strikes that were carried out by aircraft. The IAF used Brahmos, SCALP and Rampage missiles for this task. Most of these strikes could be carried out by the upcoming variants of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launch (MBRL) system. It was reported by the Economic Times that a variant of the Pinaka with a 200 km range is currently under development. The army has also acquired the Precise & Universal Launching System (PULS) which has a range of 300 km and very high accuracy. These systems are cost effective, when compared to other systems and have proven to be very effective in recent and ongoing conflicts. Even a country such as Ukraine which has an effective air defence shield has not been able to effectively tackle these systems. Moreover, to defend against these projectiles, the defending force has to burn through its stockpile of expensive surface to air missiles.
5th generation fighters
Low observability, or stealth has been a critical aspect since the First Gulf War in 1991, when American F-117s and B-2s struck Baghdad, which was considered the most heavily defended air defence zone on the planet, as per American public broadcaster PBS. The F-117 in the opening night of the conflict the aircraft constituted 2.5% of the coalition ‘shooters’, but was responsible for 31% of targets destroyed.Even now, the low observable fifth generation F-35 lead the charge during the air campaign to bomb Iran in June 2025, Venezuela earlier this year and Iran again this year. The Indian Air Force currently lacks a fifth generation platform. India is making its own fifth generation fighter aircraft called the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), but this aircraft is not expected to enter service before 2035. At the same time China is already operating a fifth-generation fighter aircraft called the J-20 and is on the cusp of inducting another fifth generation fighter called the J-35. The Pakistani Air Force too is expected to induct the J-35 fighter aircraft. In order to manage the gap the Indian Air Force is said to be looking at the Russian Sukhoi-57 as an interim measure.
Persistent ISR & Satellites
In order to keep a perpetual eye on the enemy the three services are setting up Space Based Surveillance (SBS) capabilities. The forces plan to establish a constellation of 52 satellites over a period of five years. The satellites will provide the three services the ability to keep an eye on enemy movements, keep an eye on the border and provide a satellite based communication network. Half of the satellites will be built by the private industry, while the remainder will be built by ISRO.The armed forces are also seeking to procure stratospheric airships that will have the capability to fly as high as 25 to 35 km, for context most airliners don’t fly over altitudes of 10-12 kms. These systems are envisioned to have systems that can cue targets using low probability of intercept radars and electro optronics. Besides this the armed forces are seeking to procure high altitude pseudo satellites are solar powered autonomous unmanned aircraft that are supposed to fly at altitudes of 60,000 feet for a duration of 90 days. These systems will provide the three services a web of assets that can keep a persistent set of eyes over the enemy. This is besides the large number of High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) and Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that are already being operated and procured by the armed forces.
Jointness
During Operation Sindoor the three services acted in a cohesive and coordinated manner. The planning and execution was carried out in a synchronised manner. The targets were selected and attacked in a pre-determined manner, where the targets were divided between the army and the air force. The air defence during the 88-hour operation was also handled jointly by the army and the air force.India’s military modernisation is centered on restructuring through Integrated Theatre Commands (ITCs), designed to unify Army, Navy, and Air Force capabilities by geography and function. Studies are underway to establish Theatre Commands for land borders, maritime operations, and joint air defence, enhancing synergy and combat effectiveness. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan stresses that jointness and integration are prerequisites, with ITCs separating operational roles from administrative Raise‑Train‑Sustain functions, enabling commanders to focus on security. These reforms mark a shift toward multi‑domain operations, integrating space, cyberspace, digitization, and data‑centric warfare. Complementing this, the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), created in 2020 under the CDS, promotes jointness in procurement, training, staffing, and restructuring of commands.
Information warfare: narrative dominance
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, stated that 15% of the armed force’s effort went into countering fake narrative initiated by the Pakistanis. The Indian armed forces in conjunction with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), took on the disinformation campaign started by the Pakistanis much before the first shot was fired. The campaign started by the Pakistani armed forces Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR).The Press Information Bureau (PIB)’s Fact Check Unit (FCU) in coordination with the armed forces, worked overtime to shatter fake Pakistani narratives. The fake narritves launched by the Pakistanis was in almost real time was fact checked by the FCU. Over 1,400 URLs, that were spreading fake news, were also blocked by the MIB.Operation Sindoor was a massive success for the India. India demonstrated that from no terror target in the country is safe. The Pakistanis also learnt that even when their armed forces are fully awake to the threat, Indian weapons will still get through and hit the pride of the Pakistani armed forces, as made evident in Karachi, Sargodha and Nur Khan. The Indian armed forces have gone through the 88-hour kinetic operation minute-by-minute and are now making full use of the experience. The gaps in capability are being closed and the strengths are being built upon. As Operation Sindoor is paused and not stopped, India has sent a very clear ‘desist or else’ message to Pakistan, in case of a new misadventure the next ‘or else’ could be one that no narrative build up could wipe off.
