SRH vs KKR: Manish Pandey gets a game in IPL 2026, joins Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in top list

Kolkata Knight Riders have given Manish Pandey a game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, May 3, making him the third player after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play at least one match in each of the 19 seasons of the Indian Premier League. The 36-year-old was bought in the auction for Rs 75 lakh as a replacement for Ramandeep Singh in the KKR XI for the ninth match of the season and had spent the initial part of the campaign on the bench during the team’s poor spell.

SRH vs KKR: Achievement: | Update

Pandey was selected over young options like Tejashwi Dahiya and Sarthak Ranjan, while captain Ajinkya Rahane opted for experience after Ramandeep struggled for form. This was Pandey’s first competitive match at the highest level since last year IPL. The batsman, who is one of the fittest players, was not selected by Karnataka for the 2025-26 domestic season.

Players in all 19 seasons of IPL

1. Virat Kohli

2. Rohit Sharma

3. Manish Pandey

MS Dhoni, 44, would join that list if he plays for Chennai Super Kings this season, but a calf injury has kept the former skipper out of competitive action so far.

Pandey made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2008 before moving to Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he became the first Indian centurion in the league in 2009. He then joined the now-defunct Pune Warriors India in 2010 and spent four seasons there. His best season came with KKR in 2014, when he played a key role in their second title win under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. He scored 400 runs in an IPL season for the first time that year.

He spent four seasons at KKR before moving to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018. Pandey played for Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and Delhi Capitals in 2023 before returning to KKR in 2024. He played only one game in KKR’s victorious season and three games for the franchise last year.

KKR, who came into the game on a two-match winning streak, also brought back Finn Allen, giving the New Zealand opener another chance after failures at the start of the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were without all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was rested due to illness. They brought back Harshal Patel and gave a chance to Karnataka’s in-form Smrana Ravichandran. However, Pandey’s return was the key selection call, as it placed him alongside Kohli and Rohit in a small part of IPL history.

Laugh in the Face of Darkness: How Humor Became Humanity’s Oldest Coping Mechanism india news

Laugh in the Face of Darkness: How Humor Became Humanity's Oldest Coping Mechanism

Inside unbearable hospital wards, in the rubble after a disaster, or amid the quiet devastation of personal loss, dark, absurdist jokes burst like twisted lifelines.Novelist James Grippando wrote, “We can either laugh in the face of death or die trying not to laugh.” It’s morbid, it’s wrong, yet it exudes horror, reminding us that we are all absurdly alive.George Bernard Shaw said it best: “Life is no longer funny when people die, but serious when people laugh.” This line shows why gallows humor can feel so necessary: It refuses to let death erase the full, messy complexity of being alive.Far from disrespect or denial, this laughter is humanity’s rawest rebellion – a defiant spark against the void.So today, on World Laughter Day, celebrated on the first Sunday of May, we honor the strange, healing power of humor. On a day dedicated to laughter, perhaps the most profound thing we can examine is not why we laugh when life is good, but why we laugh, almost fearlessly, when it is not.Dr Saloni Seth Agarwal, consultant psychiatrist at Ent & Mind Care, Indirapuram and associate consultant at Max Vaishali, said, “Humor appearing in the midst of crisis is not random – it is one of the brain’s more sophisticated survival tools. When reality feels overwhelming, the brain looks for ways to reduce the emotional intensity without completely denying the situation. Humor allows exactly this.”Dark humor vs. denial: where’s the line? Not all laughs in crisis are created equal. There is a meaningful and often misunderstood difference between humor that helps people cope and humor that helps them hide.Dark humor, in its most functional state, is an act of acceptance. It looks suffering straight in the eyes and chooses, consciously, to laugh anyway. The cancer patient who makes fun of her hair loss, the soldier who makes sarcastic quips in the field, the family who laughs while sharing embarrassing stories at a funeral, these are not people in denial. These are people in pain who have got a pressure valve.

.

.

The technical term for this is “gallows humor” and research consistently shows that it can reduce anxiety, promote togetherness, and even improve resiliency in high-stress occupations like emergency medicine, military service, and disaster relief work. The joke becomes a way of saying: I see it. I am not disappointed by this.Denial often operates differently. It doesn’t acknowledge the pain and laugh despite it, it uses laughter to avoid confession altogether. It distracts, it minimizes, it keeps difficult emotions permanently at an arm’s length. Where dark humor says “This is terrible, and here’s how absurd it is,” denial says “It’s okay”, and means it. Over time, that distinction has real psychological consequences. Unprocessed grief does not go away; It gets accumulated. The line between the two is rarely a matter of content, it’s a matter of direction. Is humor moving toward truth, or away from it? Is it being shared openly between people who understand what they’re laughing about, or is it being used to shut down a difficult conversation? The darkest jokes, told in the right company, can be brutally honest. It is laughter that refuses to feel anything that should give us pause.

Crisis comedy in the digital age: how Gen Z overcomes pain

When the world feels like it’s actively burning, sometimes literally, Generation Z isn’t the first to reach out to a newspaper or a therapist. They open their phones and make a meme with it.For a generation that grew up with climate anxiety as background noise, witnessed racial injustice trend on social media, lived through a pandemic in its formative years, and inherited an economic landscape that makes it feel like owning a science fiction home, humor has become a primary coping language. The meme is their gallows joke, short, shareable and very accurate.During the COVID-19 lockdown, Gen Z flooded the internet with content that was equal parts absurd and painfully self-aware. The dog meme depicting a figure calmly drinking coffee in a burning room became shorthand for an entire generation’s relationship with “it’s okay” collective distress.

.

.

Anxiety, irritation and existential dread repackaged into formats that were fun enough to share and honest enough to hurt. The humor was not dismissive, it was diagnostic. This helped. They were naming what they felt was true in a format that felt original to them.“During large-scale crises—pandemics, wars, economic uncertainty—collective humor becomes almost a parallel communication system. It helps communities by normalizing shared fears: “If everyone is joking about it, I’m not the only one feeling this way. Reducing ambiguity: Humor simplifies complex, heavy realities into digestible narratives,” said Dr. Aggarwal.

.

.

“On a personal level, the dynamic is just as obvious. Gen Z openly joke about therapy, financial stress, loneliness and mental health struggles on platforms like X and Instagram in a way that would have seemed shocking to previous generations. What appears on the outside is often, upon closer inspection, a sophisticated form of community-building. When someone posts “I’m explaining my trauma to a stranger at 2 a.m. online” via a cartoon frog, thousands of people relate. happen, comment, and partly feel less alone,” he adds.

The science of laughter as a survival mechanism

Laughter has never been just a social good. Beneath every laugh, snort and helpless laugh, the body is running a remarkably sophisticated biological program that, under stress, begins to look less like entertainment and more like armour. When we laugh, the brain releases a rush of endorphins, the same neurochemicals that are produced by exercise and especially pain relief. At the same time, cortisol and epinephrine, hormones associated with the body’s stress response, begin to fall. Research has found that even the mere anticipation of laughter can reduce cortisol levels by about 39 percent and epinephrine by 70 percent, meaning the body begins to repair itself before the joke even occurs. In a crisis, where the stress response may be activated for a long time and be physically damaging, this is not a minor effect.

.

.

Evolutionary biologists suggest this is no accident. Laughter, in its earliest form, predates language. Its origins can be traced back about 10 million years, and its primary function appears to be to form deep social bonds, the kind that allowed early human communities to stick together under pressure, coordinate during danger, and signal each other for protection. A group that could laugh together was a group that trusted each other. And trust, in a crisis, is often the difference between survival and collapse.“If one can laugh and reflect, connect and process one’s experience, humor becomes a powerful resilience tool.If laughter is the only response available, it may be worth gently exploring what lies beneath, most importantly hidden depression or ‘smiling depression,” Dr Saloni said.

West Bengal Elections 2026: Mamata vs Suvendu, Agnimitra Paul vs Tapas Banerjee – 8 major contests worth watching

With voting concluding in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, the spotlight has shifted to high-risk constituencies that are expected to influence the outcome when votes are counted on May 4. These key battles take place in different areas and reflect the broader competition between the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well as challenges from other parties in select areas.Beyond these individual battles, regional dynamics also play an important role. BJP seems to be gaining in North Bengal, where elections were held on 54 seats, while TMC is in a better position in Birbhum and West Burdwan due to its organizational strength. However, districts like Murshidabad, Bankura, Purulia and East Midnapore remain highly competitive and have no clear contenders.

Watch

Bengal election controversy: Suvendu raises questions on EVM operation by non-permanent employees

Key battles to watch:

1) Bhabanipur: Mamata Banerjee (TMC) Vs. Suvendu Adhikari (BJP)

This is the most high-profile seat in the state. After the 2021 victory in Nandigram, Adhikari is challenging the Chief Minister in his own stronghold. A “Chakravyuh” strategy by the BJP to tie down the TMC supremo to her urban constituency, relying on urban non-Bengali voters and anti-incumbency.

2) Nandigram: Suvendu Adhikari (BJP) vs Pabitra Kar (TMC)

A symbolic battlefield since the 2007 land protests, Nandigram remains politically important. TMC has fielded Kar, Adhikari’s former aide, adding a personal dimension to the already intense contest.

3) Dinhata: Udayan Guha (TMC) vs Ajay Roy (BJP)

Dinhata, known for its volatility, has seen extremely close contests in the past, including a difference of just 57 votes. This makes it an important swing seat in North Bengal.

4) Asansol South: Agnimitra Paul (BJP) vs Tapas Banerjee (TMC)

Located in an industrial area, the constituency reflects concerns about unemployment and the decline of the coal industry, making it a closely watched urban contest.

5) Bhangar: Navsad Siddiqui (ISF) vs Saukat Mollah (TMC)

Bhangar, a volatile, minority-dominated seat, is seeing a tough fight. Currently this seat is held by ISF, but TMC is making strong efforts to gain control.

6) Baharampur: Adhir Ranjan Choudhary (Congress) vs Subrata Maitra (BJP) vs Naru Gopal Mukherjee (TMC).

In this triangular contest, experienced leader Chaudhary is trying to regain his political ground after the setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

7) Samserganj: Mohammad Noor Alam (TMC) vs Najme Alam (Congress) vs Sasti Charan Ghosh (BJP).

While this seat was held by TMC in the last elections, the recent unrest in Murshidabad has created uncertainty, making the seat a close contest this time.

8) Panihati: Ratna Debnath (BJP) vs Tirthankar Ghosh (TMC).

Panihati has both political and emotional significance. TMC has retained the seat since 2011, but the BJP candidate has brought a strong personal narrative to the campaign, making it a crucial test for the ruling party. The four districts are expected to shape early trends in a total of 59 constituencies, accounting for about 39 per cent of the 152 constituencies that voted in the first phase. These elections were also marred by controversy over the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists, which reportedly led to the deletion of around 91 lakh names and drew sharp reactions from opposition parties. With many close contests across the state, the results of these key seats could play a decisive role in determining the overall outcome during the counting of votes on May 4.

In an important match in Assam Bharatiya Janata Partyunder the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa SarmaSeeking third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Congress, under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and currently the deputy leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, has started a determined effort to regain its hold in the state.

when and where to watch

Real-time data will be available on the Election Commission website, along with live updates, analysis and seat counts on The Times of India.Follow complete election coverage Here

What voting predict

Exit polls released on Wednesday evening for the Assam contest suggest a clear majority for the current government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, with a majority of pollsters supporting the BJP winning the tea-producing state for the third consecutive time. The projections have sidelined the Congress, leaving the party in a weak position and giving little boost to its campaign under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi in Assam. Overall, projections from various agencies indicate a comfortable victory for the BJP-led government, pointing to the possibility of a third consecutive term for the party under Himanta Biswa Sarma.

how to count

The vote counting process is conducted systematically and closely monitored. It begins with the counting of postal ballots, after which the votes recorded in electronic voting machines are counted. For each constituency, counting takes place in multiple rounds, with updates issued after each round. Once all the rounds are over and verified, the returning officer announces the final result. Security at the counting centers is tight, with strong rooms being constantly monitored and entry restricted only to authorized personnel and representatives of the candidates. While electronic voting machines enable faster vote tabulation, the need for verification and round-by-round counting means that the entire process continues throughout the day.
