Leeds United’s FA Cup campaign ended with a narrow defeat at Wembley, but in the days since the focus has shifted from the result to what was happening in the stands. Sixteen supporters have been reported for prosecution to be considered following incidents of homophobic chanting during the semi-final against Chelsea FC, with police confirming a wider set of crimes surrounding a match which brought together a crowd of more than 82,000.

Police detail arrests and reported crimes in Wembley

The Metropolitan Police Service confirmed that 16 Leeds United supporters were among 18 individuals who would be reported for consideration of prosecution, specifically for their involvement in homophobic chanting in and around Wembley Stadium. A spokesperson said: “The FA Cup semi-final between Leeds and Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday passed largely without incident. There were 14 arrests in or around the stadium for offenses including GBH (grievous bodily harm), ABH (actual bodily harm), affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault and tailgating. Another 18 people were not arrested, but will be reported for consideration for prosecution for other crimes. “This includes 16 Leeds fans who were seen and heard chanting homophobic slogans.” Arrests and reports cover a range of incidents, although the chant has attracted particular attention given the legal framework now in place around discriminatory language at football matches.

Why is chanting considered a crime?

The action taken by police comes under guidance introduced by the Crown Prosecution Service in 2022, when the “rent boy” chant, often directed at Chelsea FC players and supporters, was formally designated as a homophobic slur. The term has historically been used to imply that men are sex workers and, in this context, has been used as a derogatory chant aimed at Chelsea by rival fans, including Leeds United FC. This classification allows authorities to pursue cases as hate crimes where the evidence meets the threshold for prosecution. In practical terms, that change has changed the way events are handled inside stadiums. Behavior that was once dismissed as part of crowd noise is now considered a potentially criminal matter, especially in high-profile fixtures where policing and monitoring are more visible.

The wider issue of the Seville chant and the Leeds matches

The match was also affected by the context of the chants jimmy savilleThe convicted sex offender whose name has been used to taunt Leeds supporters for years, largely because of his birthplace rather than any formal connection to the club. Leeds United have repeatedly spoken out about the impact of those chants and have insisted on treating them as “tragedy chants”, which would bring them under the same legal scrutiny as other forms of abuse. A club spokesperson told The Athletic: “The club’s supporters are subjected to these disgusting taunts by opposition fans at every match, which should not happen in today’s game and is insulting to the victims of Jimmy Savile’s abuse. “At the same time, the club also rejects the counter slogans of our own supporters.”

The club’s position has been consistent on both sides of the issue, condemning the chants directed at their supporters, while also making it clear that the reactions from their own fans are not acceptable.

Match context and flashpoints on the pitch

On the pitch, the match was tight and sometimes scrappy, increasing the already tense atmosphere at Wembley. A major flashpoint came when Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to pull Mark Cucurella’s hair during a controversial moment, but referee Jared Gillette, supported by VAR official Paul Howard, opted to take no further action after a review. The physical nature of the game, coupled with the long-standing rivalry between the two groups of supporters, contributed to a volatile atmosphere in front of over 82,000 fans.

The match was decided by Enzo Fernandez’s first-half header, which ensured a 1–0 victory for Chelsea in front of 82,542 spectators and set up an FA Cup final against Manchester City on 16 May.

Extensive investigation before FA Cup final

As the final stage approaches, the response from police and football authorities points to continued monitoring of crowd behaviour, particularly around discriminatory chants. The combination of arrests, reported crimes, and public statements reflects a change in the way these incidents are dealt with, with less tolerance for language that turns into abuse. For Leeds, the Wembley result closed a chapter in their season. The result has opened up another avenue, now beyond the pitch.

Rajya Sabha Chairman accepts merger of 7 AAP MPs with BJP
BJP president Nitin Nabin (second, right) welcomes Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, others into BJP

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan has officially accepted the merger of seven AAP MPs with the BJP – taking the ruling party’s strength to 113 in the 245-member Upper House. After Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Vikramjit Sahni and Rajinder Gupta left the party, AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has now reduced to three. RS website shows MPs as part of BJP.On Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Chairman has accepted the merger of seven AAP MPs with BJP. “Welcome to the nation-building NDA under the visionary leadership of PM Modi and goodbye to the ‘tukde-tukde’ India alliance,” he said. However, AAP MP Sanjay Singh – who had written to Radhakrishnan on Sunday demanding disqualification of MPs under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution – in another letter on Monday sought clarification from the RS general secretary on on what basis the change in AAP’s party status (number of MPs) in the RS records was made.If this is not made clear, the AAP will approach the court over this “unilateral decision”, Singh said. This was done “without the prior information or consent of AAP or its leader in the House”, he said.In his Monday letter, Singh said any arbitrary change in the party’s status without following due process would have “serious consequences” on the rights of the party and its members. He demanded an investigation.Meanwhile, a section of legal experts highlighted the inability of the 10th Schedule to prevent political defection when the scale of “merger” is achieved. The “merger” exception sub-paragraph 2 under paragraph 4 of the Schedule stipulates that such merger is valid if at least two-thirds of the legislature party agrees to it.On his decision to leave AAP, Chadha alleged in a video message on Monday that the work environment in AAP has become ‘toxic’. It has got stuck in the hands of some corrupt and compromised people, who work for personal gains, he claimed.Congress’s Jairam Ramesh said the only surprise in the Chairman’s decision was that it “took so long”. “Till recently, there were questions over the integrity of the BJP and claimed to have evidence, but now all that has been forgotten. The ED was conducting some raids till recently, but one can bet that they will stop now,” he said. “Kamal has become Lotus”.

IPL 2026 | 'If anyone can challenge Virat Kohli, it's him...': Former Indian star calls RCB legend's IPL record a 'stepping stone'

New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bangalore’s talisman continues to redefine longevity and excellence IPLAnd this latest milestone adds to his immense legacy. Virat Kohli, already the league’s leading run-scorer, became the first batsman to breach the 9,000-run mark, a feat that underlines both his consistency and hunger all season.“If anyone can challenge Virat Kohli, it is none other than Virat Kohli himself. That is why in IPL, it is 9000 runs. mount everest Irfan Pathan wrote on X, “This is just a stepping stone for them, not a destination.”This historic moment came in familiar territory, the Arun Jaitley Stadium, adding a layer of emotions to an already historic night. Kohli played a composed but authoritative role in the chase, remaining unbeaten and sealing the win in style with consecutive sixes. It was another reminder that records follow them, but their primary focus is winning games. Now with over 9,000 runs to his name, built on a strong average and consistent strike rate, Kohli’s IPL journey is less about individual peaks and more about sustained accumulation. Eight centuries and dozens of half-centuries reflect his adaptability to match situations and emerging formats of T20 batting. This season, he remains firmly in contention for the Orange Cap, combining control with fluency. His ability to deliver pace without compromising consistency has been central to RCB’s strong campaign so far.The team’s impressive win over Delhi Capitals reflected the overall performance. Clinical bowling dismantled the opposition early, leading to a straightforward target which the batting unit chased down with aggressive intent. Top-order contributions ensured there were no interruptions. With six wins in eight matches, RCB looks a serious contender. And at the center of their charge is Kohli, who is still developing, still motivated, and, as Pathan suggested, perhaps still chasing the standards that only he can set.

Visa norms to be eased, 100% duty-free exports as India, New Zealand ink trade agreement

Visa norms to be eased, 100% duty-free exports as India, New Zealand ink trade agreement

New Delhi: India and New Zealand on Monday signed a bilateral trade deal, described as a “once in a generation” opportunity. It is expected to be implemented by the end of the year, and will allow 100% duty-free access for goods shipped from the country along with easier visa rules for students and skilled professionals and free access for yoga professionals, AYUSH practitioners and musicians. Additionally, New Zealand has committed to investing $20 billion over the next 15 years, with Trade Minister Todd McLay identifying infrastructure among the areas where some investment will be made with the government facilitating the flow. With the agreement, both sides are looking to double bilateral trade in goods and services to $5 billion in five years. He appeared confident of the deal being reached despite concerns from his government’s coalition partner New Zealand First, as the opposition New Zealand Labor Party has backed it.Amidst the concerns expressed, McClay said, “We have the majority in Parliament to pass this agreement. All trade agreements presented in Parliament have enjoyed a supermajority of the two largest parties… We have bipartisanship.”The deal was finalized within nine months of resumption of talks and India managed to keep its sensitive agricultural products and dairy out of the scope of the treaty. PM Narendra Modi said, “The FTA catalyzes new opportunities for our farmers, artisans, young entrepreneurs, women and MSMEs, opening avenues for global market access and enterprise across all sectors, from agriculture and manufacturing to technology, education and services.”Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said this is India’s ninth agreement in the last few years, adding that the UK and Oman deals will be operationalized in the coming weeks, while the trade deal with the EU is awaiting approval.“At the heart of the agreement is empowerment for exports, agricultural productivity, student mobility, skills, investment and services,” he said.Goyal said India can expect to gain a larger share in product segments ranging from footwear to automobiles. The trade agreement, negotiations for which were concluded in December, will provide duty-free access to India’s exports including textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, gems and jewellery, engineering goods and processed foods. New Zealand has a maximum tariff of up to 10% in sectors such as ceramics, carpets, automobiles and auto components. On its part, India will reduce tariffs on 70% of tariff lines, covering 95% of bilateral trade value, while keeping about 30% of products outside the scope of the agreement. While the pact opens doors for Indian professionals, Goyal said they have also invited GCCs from other New Zealand to take advantage of the skilled manpower in the country and reduce their costs. India has offered concessions to New Zealand in areas such as banking by allowing it to open more branches here.McLay said New Zealand companies intend to use the treaty’s provisions to import goods into India and re-export them after value addition. Goyal clarified that some of these goods, which may be agriculture or dairy related, will not be allowed to be sold in the domestic market and can only be used for export, in line with India’s foreign trade policy.

A businessman, two lawyers involved in multimillion-dollar air bribery scheme: ‘Planned betrayal’

एक व्यवसायी, दो वकील करोड़ों डॉलर की हवाई रिश्वत योजना में शामिल: 'सुनियोजित विश्वासघात'Former businessman Rajesh Pankaj Budhbhatti, 65, was sentenced to 90 months in prison, while lawyer Gary Charles Zumber, 56, was sentenced to 70 months. Another lawyer, Paul Joseph Sulla, 79, was sentenced to 60 months. All three were convicted after a jury trial in the District of Hawaii in June 2025.The case centered on a conspiracy to bribe Alan Scott Rudo, a housing specialist with the Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development. Prosecutors said the people paid bribes and kickbacks to gain approval for development agreements involving more than $11 million of affordable housing projects. Through these agreements the three used their companies to obtain land and affordable housing loans. However, despite promises to build houses for local residents, not a single unit has been constructed. The scheme involved approximately $2 million in bribes and kickbacks given or promised to public officials.Assistant Attorney General A. Tyson Duva said, “This was not just corruption – this was a calculated betrayal of the very community the defendants were supposed to serve.”He added: “Instead of building homes for struggling families looking for a better life, the defendants orchestrated a scheme to enrich themselves, paying out millions in bribes and kickbacks while pretending to help those in need. This kind of greed doesn’t just break the law – it erodes trust, damages institutions, robs honest businesses of opportunity, and harms American citizens.”FBI officials called the case a serious breach of public trust. Special Agent in Charge David Porter said, “This sentence is another step toward accountability for those who pollute the integrity of our government institutions with bribes and kickbacks.”Rudo pleaded guilty and cooperated with investigators and has not yet been sentenced.

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Monday he said he was “confident” of a “historic transformation” in Bengal after the elections and that he would return to the state to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government.Addressing a rally in Barrackpore, Modi said, “Wherever I went, I felt the mood of the people of Bengal. I am confident that I will have to be present at the swearing-in ceremony after May 4 (the day the assembly election results will be declared).”India’s prosperity is incomplete without “Purvodaya” (rising of the East), he said. The PM said Bengal was heading towards a “historic transition” and the elections would “change the destiny of the entire eastern India”. “It is my duty to keep Bengal safe. I will never step back from my responsibility.”In an attempt to establish the BJP’s historical closeness to Bengal, Modi noted the rise of his party’s ideological precursor Jan Sangh in the state. Modi said, “The Presidency region of Bengal gave birth to Jan Sangh and elected Syama Prasad Mukherjee as MP. The BJP government in Bengal will fulfill its pledge to end the menace of refugees.”Infiltrators should leave Bengal and India before April 29: Modi In an attempt to strike a chord with the community, Modi visited the Matua temple in Thakurnagar and shared a photo of his 2019 meeting with the now late Matua matriarch, Baroma Binapani Devi, on his X handle.Underscoring the BJP’s commitment towards protecting persecuted Hindus in neighboring countries, he said in Thakurnagar, “Jana Sangh (ideological precursor of BJP) stands strongly with the refugees. Syama Prasad Mukherjee was considered their spokesperson.” In the same breath, he spoke out against Trinamool’s “appeasement politics” and vowed to drive out infiltrators. He said, “I am warning the infiltrators to leave Bengal and India before April 29. Otherwise, every one of them will be thrown out after May 4.”Referring to the first phase of voting on April 23, which saw a record turnout of over 93%, Modi said, “TMC’s pride was destroyed in the first phase. BJP’s massive victory in the second phase will be assured. We have to win at every booth and there is no room for complacency.” Pointing to the huge participation of women in the first phase, Modi said women were cheated the most during Trinamool’s tenure.Referring to the I-PAC issue, he said, “Trinamool and the state government tried to create obstacles in the investigation of the central agency. Attempts were made to destroy evidence. But the Supreme Court has recently given a strict order in this case.”Before attending the road show in Kolkata, Modi offered prayers at Thanthania Kalibari.
