‘Why shouldn’t I?’: Trump steps up pressure on NATO allies, hints at troop cuts in Italy, Spain over Iran conflict

'Why shouldn't I?': Trump steps up pressure on NATO allies, hints at troop cuts in Italy, Spain over Iran conflict

US President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible drawdown of the US military presence in Italy and Spain, sharply criticizing both countries over their stance on the ongoing war in Iran and a growing rift between Washington and its European allies.Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he was actively considering reducing the deployment. “Yeah, well, I probably would. Why shouldn’t I?” He said this when asked about possible military cuts in two NATO member countries.“Italy has not helped us at all and Spain has been terrible, absolutely terrible,” he said. Also read: Is America leaving NATO? Why Spain-Iran war could be Trump’s biggest global blow? The comments reflect the latest increase in tensions between the United States and its NATO allies, many of whom have opposed the US-backed military campaign against Iran and direct involvement in efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

Troop cuts across Europe being reviewed

Trump’s comments on Italy and Spain came an hour after he indicated that Washington was already “studying and reviewing potential reductions” of US forces in Germany, suggesting a broader reassessment of America’s military footprint in Europe. As of December 31, 2025, there were 12,662 active-duty U.S. troops deployed to Italy and 3,814 active-duty U.S. troops to Spain. Germany hosts a fairly large contingent of 36,436 US personnel, making it the backbone of the US military presence in Europe. The potential decline reflects Trump’s long-standing frustrations with NATO allies over burden-sharing and defense commitments, now exacerbated by disagreements over the Iran conflict.

NATO allies criticized over Iran war

Trump has repeatedly criticized European allies for failing to support the US-Israeli operation against Iran and for not contributing to efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit chokepoint disrupted by the conflict.Earlier this month, Trump also took aim at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, saying she lacked “courage” on Iran in comments to an Italian newspaper, a sign of tensions even with the leaders previously seen as close ideological allies.Spain has also faced frequent criticism from Washington, not only for its opposition to military operations against Iran but also for failing to increase defense spending in line with NATO expectations. A recent report suggested the US is also considering ways to suspend Spain from NATO, although no formal move has been confirmed.

Germany dispute deepens amid war tensions

Tensions have extended to Germany, where Trump has repeatedly attacked Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing him of interfering in US foreign policy by failing to manage domestic and regional crises.“Germany’s Chancellor should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (where he has been completely ineffective!) and fixing his broken country, especially immigration and energy, and less time on meddling with those who want to get rid of the Iran nuclear threat,” Trump wrote in a social media post.He said that the war on Iran, despite rising global energy prices, “is making the world a safer place, including Germany”.Trump’s comments came after criticism from Mertz, who questioned Washington’s strategy in the Iran conflict and warned about the risks of prolonged military involvement, drawing parallels with past wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US president responded earlier this week by saying that the German leader “doesn’t know what he’s talking about”, further straining relations between the two countries.

Europe urges caution, stresses NATO unity

Despite the sharp rhetoric, Germany has tried to maintain diplomatic balance. Foreign Minister Johann Waddefull said Berlin is open to the possibility of reducing US troop levels while continuing discussions within the NATO framework.“We’re ready for it,” Wadefull said. “We are discussing this closely and in a spirit of confidence in all NATO bodies, and we are looking forward to a decision from the Americans on this.”“We are following a clear guideline, especially during this turbulent phase,” Merz said, reiterating his commitment to the transatlantic alliance. “This guideline focuses on a strong NATO and a reliable transatlantic partnership.”

Widespread consequences from the Iran conflict

The growing discord underscores the broader geopolitical impact of the Iran war, which the United States launched with Israel without full consultation with NATO partners. The conflict has disrupted global energy markets, effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, sending oil prices soaring and disrupting supply chains around the world.Washington has defended its actions as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, although differences remain within the alliance over both the strategy and its long-term consequences. The United States has also supported Israel in related developments, including blocking a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, calling the mission a “meaningless political stunt” and urging allies to refuse military support for such efforts. However, Spain condemned the interception and summoned Israel’s envoy, highlighting differences within Europe over Middle East policy.

RCB made a strong comeback Bhuvneshwar KumarWho dismissed brilliant openers B Sai Sudarshan and Gill in the powerplay. Bhuvneshwar (3/28) also dismissed Jos Buttler (39), while the pressure increased a bit with the dismissals of Washington Sundar and Shahrukh Khan. Virat Kohli (28) started aggressively, hitting five fours to new ball bowler Kagiso Rabada in the second over. Rabada’s new ball partner Mohammed Siraj got left-handed batsman Jacob Bethel (5) caught by Rashid Khan at short midwicket.Gill’s decision to stick with Rabada, who had conceded 21 runs in his opening over, paid off as Kohli’s attempt to dominate the South African was thwarted by a sharp short ball that unsettled him. The batsman’s effort barely crossed the 30-yard circle, where Rashid completed a sliding catch. RCB’s score after four overs was 39/2. Captain Rajat Patidar then joined Devdutt Padikkal (40) and the pair took RCB to 59/2 by the end of the powerplay.Their 44-run partnership ended when Patidar’s pick-up shot off left-arm pacer Arshad Khan (3/22) was caught by a diving Jason Holder. ‘I have five’: Ronaldo shuts down disrespect after problematic post-match play in Al Nassr vs Al Ahly | international sports news

'I have five': Ronaldo shuts down disrespect after problematic post-match play in Al Nassr vs Al Ahly
Cristiano Ronaldo scored and responded from the pitch as Al Nassr beat Al Ahly 2-0 in a tense, controversial Saudi Pro League clash/Imahage: X

It was a tense and rapidly worsening night in Riyadh Cristiano Ronaldo Shaping both the outcome and the outcome, he broke the game early by scoring a goal and subsequently responded to the ridicule and controversy following Al Nassr’s 2–0 win over Al Ahly, a match that quickly devolved into a sharp exchange of confrontations, accusations and continental success beyond football.

The outcome of the title race is wrapped in tension

This match is playing an important role in the title race. Al Nassr entered the game leading the standings and faced third-placed Al Ahly Saudi FC, with the gap between the two sides already shaping the run-in. The breakthrough came in the 76th minute. Ronaldo rose above the defense to meet Joao Félix’s left-sided corner and fired a header into the net, a goal that not only broke a tight contest but also became the 970th goal of his career. It was another boost to a season in which he has scored more than 25 league goals and been central to Al Nassr’s 20-match unbeaten run. The second goal came in the 90th minute. Kingsley Coman sealed the result at 2–0 with a quick strike on the break, exposing Al Ahly as they went ahead late in the game. The win moved Al Nassr eight points ahead of Al Hilal, who have a game in hand, and 13 points clear of Al Ahly. With four matches remaining, Ronaldo’s side need eight more points to secure the league title.

Initial flashpoint and ongoing feud

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal changed the atmosphere of the game and it didn’t take long for things to heat up. Merih Demirel, who played with him at Juventus, was involved in several confrontations with Al Nassr players and also clashed with the crowd by repeatedly holding up two fingers in reference to Al Ahly’s two AFC Champions League titles. Al Ahly recently won the AFC Champions League Elite in consecutive seasons: 2024–25 and 2025–26, defeating Kawasaki Frontale and Machida Zelvia respectively under manager Matthias Jaisle. Demirel’s gesture was a visible reminder of that continental success, especially in a stadium where Al Nassr have not matched it in recent years. The match became increasingly physical, culminating in a late incident when Koeman challenged Demiral in the final moments. The referee did not issue a red card, a decision which became a focal point of the aftermath.

The chaos and medal excitement of the final whistle

As the final whistle blew, Merih Demirel went straight at Kingsley Coman and had to be stopped, with players and staff on both sides coming forward as there was a risk of further foul play. The defender was clearly unhappy with the tackle and umpiring, and the exchange immediately attracted others before spilling onto the pitch. He then made sure it didn’t end with the final whistle, walking onto the pitch with his AFC Champions League medal and holding it up towards the Al Nassr supporters, at one point cutting them off as he pointed in their direction. The message was quite clear, aimed at the players as well as the crowd, a clear reminder from Al Ahly of their recent continental success in contrast to Al Nassr’s lack of silverware despite the level of investment in the team and star power. Later, he reinforced the sentiment on social media, writing: “For the first time, there is a Champions League medal in their stadium.”

allegations after the match

Demiral’s frustration continued in his post-match comments, where he focused on both the tackling and the umpiring. “Check my leg, he almost broke it. It’s a shame,” he said, pointing to Koeman’s challenge. He then went on to suggest bias in favor of the league leaders. “It seems that the referees help Al Nassr, they want them to win. We always win games and no one helps. We will remain on top.”The comments escalated an already heated night and also brought back familiar complaints about refereeing in the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo’s reaction on and off the pitch

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was named man of the match, was hit on his way to the interview area when an Al Ahly supporter shouted about his two AFC Champions League titles, and he responded by holding up his hand with all five fingers and saying, “I have five Champions Leagues, five,” referring to his UEFA Champions League victory, another with Manchester United in 2007–08. Four times with Real Madrid between 2013–14. 2017-18.The comparison really wasn’t what it was. The UEFA Champions League is widely seen as the highest level of club football, with the strongest teams, top players and overall standards at their peak, while the AFC Champions League elite, despite being won twice by Al Ahly, does not come close to that level in terms of depth, quality or global profile.

A blanket warning about the direction of the league

Cristiano Ronaldo addressed the conduct surrounding the match more directly, speaking about the impact of such incidents on the image of the Saudi Pro League, a competition he was effectively brought in to help shape and elevate, the league having become one of football’s most recognizable figures in the hopes of driving its growth and global profile. He said, “I think it’s not good for the league. Everyone complains, everyone overdoes it. This is football, this is not war.” “I will have time to speak at the end of the season because I have seen a lot of bad things. Many players complain, they do it in Instagram and Facebook posts, they talk about referees, they talk about the league, they talk about the project… This is not the purpose of the league. We must set an example not only here but also for Europe, because we want to compete with them to become one of the best leagues in the world. We have to stop, because this is not football for me. The comments reflect his role beyond the pitch, as one of the central figures in an effort to raise the profile of Saudi Arabia’s domestic league and establish it alongside Europe’s top competitions.

Results, rivalries and what’s next

Al Nassr’s victory tightens their grip on the title race and extends one race, taking them within striking distance of the championship. But the match will be remembered as much for its aftermath as for its outcome, a sequence that began with a goal, progressed through confrontations and gestures and ended with Ronaldo saying the last words.

Center hikes commercial LPG prices by Rs 993 amid global energy crisis

New Delhi: The Center on Friday increased the price of 19 kg commercial cylinder by Rs 993 across the country, news agency ANI quoted sources as saying. There has been no change in the prices of domestic cylinders. Now the price of 19 kg commercial cylinder in Delhi will be Rs 3,071.50.The price rise comes amid broader discussion over India’s energy supply situation, particularly as tensions in West Asia have raised concerns about potential disruptions to global oil routes.Indian Oil Corporation said retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG (14.2 kg cylinder) remained unchanged, leaving domestic consumers completely untouched by the recent rise in international fuel prices.“No change in domestic LPG (14.2 kg) prices for 33 crore domestic LPG consumers.
