Sentiment worsened as conflict in the Middle East continued to escalate, with US President Donald Trump saying the ceasefire was “hanging on life support”. At the same time, pressure continues in the Strait of Hormuz, with the disruption now lasting more than 70 days, sending oil prices soaring. Brent crude futures were up 30 cents, or 0.29%, at $104.51 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose 31 cents, or 0.32%, at $98.38 at 0002 GMT. Both benchmarks were already up about 2.8% in the previous session on Monday. Dalal Street reflected weak sentiments with benchmark Sensex and Nifty50 opening in the red. While NSE Nifty 50 fell 174 points to 23,641.20, BSE Sensex fell 645.07 points to 75,370.21 by 9:35 am.Adding to the pressure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal on Sunday to citizens to reduce gold purchases, fuel consumption and foreign travel to conserve foreign exchange reserves also weighed on currency market sentiment.The rupee opened at 94.97 at the interbank foreign exchange market on Monday and moved between 94.87 and 95.34 during the session before closing at 95.31 (provisional) compared with 94.49 on Friday.Forex traders said the rupee weakened due to the strong US dollar and continued foreign capital outflows. India’s foreign exchange reserves also came under pressure, falling by $7.794 billion to $690.693 billion in the week ended May 1, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India. In the last week ending April 24, the reserves had declined by $ 4.82 billion to $ 698.487 billion.Market participants said the rupee continued to remain under pressure due to global geopolitical uncertainty, rising crude oil prices, strong dollar and persistent foreign fund outflows.

A man who allegedly breached security at Denver International Airport was struck and killed by a Frontier Airlines plane departing late Friday last week, causing an engine fire and a chaotic emergency evacuation that left several passengers injured.A Frontier flight headed from Denver to Los Angeles International Airport reported hitting a pedestrian during takeoff at about 11:19 p.m. local time on Friday, the airport said in a post on Twitter.The horrific video of the incident has gone viral.Airport officials said that an unidentified person had entered the runway area by jumping the perimeter fence just minutes before the collision.According to news agency AP, officials said the man was attacked about two minutes after entering the airport grounds and was not believed to be an airport employee.

Pilot reported engine fire after collision

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation into the murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s associate Chandranath Rath.After Bengal Police recommended a CBI probe in the case, the central agency formed a seven-member team under the leadership of DIG Pankaj Singh.“The investigation into the murder of West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari, PA Chandranath Rath, has been transferred to the CBI. The CBI has constituted a seven-member SIT headed by a DIG rank officer,” the central probe agency said.A few days after the assembly elections, Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath was murdered in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.Rath was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants who chased his vehicle, forced him to stop and opened fire in full public view at around 10.30 pm before fleeing.According to eyewitnesses, Rath’s car was first stopped by a four-wheeler at Dohariya Junction near Dolatala, after which a motorcycle rider came near the vehicle and started firing.Earlier on Monday, a special investigation team camping in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had arrested three people in connection with the incident. One of the accused has been identified as the alleged sharpshooter.The three accused were brought to Kolkata late on Sunday night and presented in the Barasat court. The court sent him to police custody till May 24.A CID press release said, “So far, three suspects have been arrested in the case of the gruesome murder of Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram on May 6. Based on specific leads, two people – Mayank Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya – were detained from Buxar in Bihar. The third accused, Raj Singh, was detained from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. After interrogation, all three were arrested by the Madhyamgram police station this morning.”Sources claimed that Raj Singh has been identified as the possible sharpshooter, although police said further investigation is needed to establish this.In the Barasat court, special public prosecutor Biwas Chatterjee informed the court that the accused had entered the city through Bally Nivedita Setu and paid the toll using UPI. The Hague: An artwork looted by the Nazis from the world-famous Goudsticker collection has turned up in the Netherlands in the family of a notorious SS collaborator, Dutch art detective Arthur Brand said on Monday.Describing it as “the most bizarre case of my entire career”, Brand said “Portrait of a Young Girl”, by the Dutch artist Toon Kelder, had presumably hung for decades in the home of Hendrik Seford’s descendants. The case is similar to a discovery that made global headlines in 2025, when a Nazi-looted 18th-century painting – from the collection of the late Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudsticker – was featured in a property advertisement in Argentina.In the Dutch case, Brand said he had been contacted by a man who had recently revealed two terrible secrets: he was a descendant of Sefard, and his family had been exhibiting looted art for years. This family member, who wished to remain anonymous, told Brand that he had seen the painting hanging in the hallway of Seford’s granddaughter, who was murdered by Dutch resistance fighters in 1943.Seferd, one of the highest-ranking Dutch collaborators with the Nazis, commanded a Waffen-SS unit of Dutch volunteers on the Eastern Front. The NYT carried news of his death on its front page in 1943, and a lavish Nazi state funeral was held for him in The Hague, with a wreath laid by Adolf Hitler. Brand said Safford’s granddaughter told a family member that the painting was “Jewish looted art, stolen from Goudstikker. It is not sellable. New Delhi: Thousands of postgraduate medical aspirants appearing for the May 2026 Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) have flagged delays in admission and allotment of exam centers hundreds of kilometers away, barely a week before the May 16 exam.The exam conducted by AIIMS Delhi released the admit cards on May 9 around 3 pm, but candidates alleged that the website became slow or crashed soon after, leaving many unable to download the hall tickets for about 9-10 hours. Many students said they could access the portal only after midnight, leading to a flood of complaints on social media.Dr Aman Kumar (@manish__aman) tweeted, “You charge ₹4,000 for the application form and yet the website crashes for hours.”According to AIIMS officials, heavy traffic from simultaneous logins slowed down the portal temporarily. “If one lakh people access a website at the same time, it may slow down or crash. This happens with many exams, including NEET. The site is now working properly and candidates are able to download the admit card,” officials said.Candidates also flagged the allotment of distant examination centres. Candidates from larger states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan said they were allotted centers 500-800 km away because INI-CET collected only state-wise preferences during registration and not city-wise.An Agra-based candidate said he was allotted Varanasi, about 650 km away, while a Mumbai-based candidate claimed he got Nanded as the centre, increasing travel costs and logistics difficulties. Students said it could take 12-24 hours to travel to states like UP and Rajasthan, while the seven-day gap between the release of admit cards and the exam leaves little time for confirmed train or flight booking.“There are hundreds of such cases,” said one candidate, urging AIIMS to review the center allocation process.On complaints regarding distant centres, AIIMS officials said the allotment depends on seat availability and preference pattern, adding that candidates are asked to fill state-wise preferences instead of city-wise preferences to prevent possible malpractices in center allotment. “The effort is always to allot the nearest possible centre, but in larger states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, some candidates may still get centers 500-800 km away if nearby seats are already filled,” officials said.Dr Naval K, Associate Dean (Examination) at AIIMS Delhi.
