Google looking to invest in AI infra, servers and drone manufacturing in India

Bengaluru: Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday said Google is exploring the possibility of investing in artificial intelligence infrastructure as well as manufacturing of servers and drones in India. This indicates a possible expansion of the ambitions of the tech giants in the country beyond cloud and startup programs.“Google is exploring the possibility of investing in AI infrastructure and manufacturing of servers and drones in India,” Vaishnav said in a post on X after meeting with Google executives. The manufacturing reference is notable as Google’s India announcements have largely focused on cloud, startup ecosystem support and AI skills initiatives rather than local hardware manufacturing exploration. This development comes just months after Google Cloud announced what it described as its largest India investment to date, a proposed $15 billion investment over 2026-2030 to set up its first AI hub in India in Visakhapatnam. The project includes gigawatt-scale data center operations, expanded fiber infrastructure and AI compute capabilities. In recent months, Google has furthered its India AI ecosystem through several accelerators and startup initiatives focused on artificial intelligence.Separately, Google opened applications for the third cohort of Google Play Accelerator India, an equity-free program for AI-powered apps and game startups.Last month, Google for Startups Accelerator India had invited applications from AI-first startups working in areas including agentic AI, multimodal AI, sovereign AI and “physical AI” covering robotics and manufacturing applications. The program also offered access to cloud TPU and AI infrastructure.Google has additionally supported Indian AI startups through partnerships such as Accel Atoms, where selected companies received funding support, compute credits, and access to Google Cloud, Gemini, and DeepMind infrastructure.

Quote of the Day by Queen Victoria:
Queen Victoria (Image: Wikipedia)

History often remembers rulers for their wars, their political reforms, their royal ceremonies, and their powerful speeches. But sometimes one quiet sentence can tell you more about a person than years of official records. One such moment came from Queen Victoria, who upon becoming queen is reported to have said, “Then, dear mother, I hope you will grant the first request I make of you as queen. Leave me alone for an hour.”This quote has been passed down through generations because it reveals an unusual human moment behind the crown. In 1837, when King William IV died, Victoria, only 18 years old, suddenly became Queen of the United Kingdom. Surrounded by royal expectations, political pressures, court traditions, and public scrutiny, the young queen asked for something surprisingly simple. She wanted to be alone for an hour. This line continues to fascinate historians and readers alike because of the emotional gravity of the responsibility. It shows that even at one of the most important moments in British royal history, Victoria needed peace, privacy and time to absorb the reality of her new life. This quote is more than a royal statement. It resonates on a deeply personal level and is still emotionally available today.

Quote of the Day by Queen Victoria

“Then, dear mother, I hope you will grant the first request I make of you as queen. Leave me alone for an hour.”

The moment Queen Victoria became ruler of the British Empire

Queen Victoria ascended the throne on 20 June 1837. She was sleeping at Kensington Palace when officials came early in the morning to tell her that King William IV had died. At that moment his entire life changed forever.History books tell how a young Victoria, poised and collected, handled the responsibility that suddenly fell upon her. But her now-famous request to be left alone for an hour highlights the emotional truth behind this historic change. The British monarchy had enormous political and symbolic importance at that time. Britain was becoming one of the most powerful empires in the world, and suddenly Victoria found herself at the center of it all, before she was even 19 years old.On the surface, his request for solitude seems modest, but historians often see it as a sign of emotional maturity and self-awareness. He did not give any dramatic reaction. Instead, she stopped and took him inside.

Why does this quote still feel deeply human today?

And that’s one reason why this quote still resonates. This is a universal emotional response. Big changes in life often include times when people need to be alone to think.People often seek silence before speaking or acting, whether it’s starting a new job, losing a significant other, becoming a parent, receiving unexpected news, or facing a major responsibility. This is the same tendency which was expressed by Queen Victoria. This quote also reflects insecurity. Public figures, especially monarchs, are expected to appear confident and calm at all times. Victoria’s request also shows that processing emotions is a natural human response, even for a person who has attained immense power.Modern readers love this quote because it reminds us that power doesn’t always come in loud or dramatic forms. Sometimes strength lies in quiet reflection.

Queen Victoria’s early life shaped her personality

Victoria had a difficult childhood. Before becoming queen she was raised under a very restrictive system called the Kensington system. Much of his daily life was controlled by a system designed by his mother and advisors. She was rarely given any privacy, freedom or independence to make her own decisions. Historians often describe his early years as isolated and emotionally restrained. In this context, his appeal to “be alone for an hour” is even more poignant. It was not just about silence or relaxation. This reflects her desire to be independent at the same time as she finally had power as queen. This statement was as much political as it was personal.

Emotional pressure behind becoming queen at the age of 18

Today, coming of age is often associated with independence and adulthood. But for Victoria, it meant becoming the ruler of a vast empire with millions of subjects on different continents. He was suddenly charged with responsibilities that included decisions about government, diplomacy, public appearances, constitutional issues, and national stability. The historical record shows that Victoria understood the gravity of her situation from the beginning. She was young, but developed a deep sense of duty very early on.His famous request to be left alone tells us a lot about the emotional intensity of that moment. He did not celebrate immediately. He needed privacy to absorb the enormity of his new situation. That emotional honesty is part of why this quote remains memorable after nearly two centuries.

How Queen Victoria changed the British monarchy

Queen Victoria later became one of Britain’s longest-reigning monarchs. After more than six decades of widespread change, he ruled from 1837 until his death in 1901.The Victorian period was marked by industrial growth, scientific discovery, the spread of railways, cultural development, and imperial expansion. Britain’s influence increased rapidly during this period.Victoria also changed the image of the monarchy. Earlier kings were generally seen in the context of politics and royal power. Victoria gave the royal institution a more personal and family-centered image. Her marriage to Prince Albert and her role as a mother helped mold public perceptions of the monarchy. Many historians think that this helped bring the monarchy and the common people closer together. The interplay between Victoria’s writings and diaries and her public role often revealed a deeply emotional and reflective personality.

The importance of solitude in moments of change

Furthermore, Queen Victoria’s quote points to the deep human need for solitude at critical moments in life.Psychologists and historians often comment that reflection helps people process emotional changes. Quiet moments allow people to understand fear, responsibility, uncertainty, and change before facing public expectations. This emotional process is also part of Victoria’s tendency to pause in private before beginning her duties. Many of us feel this way in our modern lives as we move into new stages of life. Thus, this quote appears to be timeless, as it reflects not just a historical event but an emotional truth.

Why do historians still discuss this famous royal quote?

Many royal quotes are political or about power or leadership. What makes Victoria’s statement unique is its simplicity.Historians like to quote it because it reflects personality rather than authority. It shows a young woman suddenly burdened by the burden of the nation, who still needs emotional room for a moment. The quote also helps humanize historical figures who are often seen only through ceremonies, paintings, and political records.Victoria’s appeal reminds readers that behind the crowns and titles are human beings who struggle with fear, responsibility, uncertainty, and emotions just like the rest of us.

Queen Victoria’s personal life was full of both happiness and sorrow

Victoria’s reign was not only politically significant, but also emotionally complex. Her marriage to Prince Albert was one of the defining relationships of her life. She wrote extensively about her love for him and depended on his support.Albert’s death in 1861 was a tragedy for him. Victoria mourned for a long time and remained away from public life for years. Many of his personal writings and letters also have considerable emotional depth. Victoria’s private thoughts reflected sensitivity, affection, loneliness, and emotional honesty, a side that contrasted with the harsh public image often associated with the monarchy.Because of that emotional honesty, his famous quote still feels genuine, not like some formal gesture.

Queen Victoria’s lasting cultural impact

Queen Victoria is still one of the most recognized monarchs in world history. Architecture, literature, politics, fashion, science and social customs throughout Britain and beyond were influenced by the Victorian era.Today, the term Victorian also exemplifies an entire historical era defined by immense change. His long reign also helped stabilize the monarchy during a time of social and industrial change. Many historians see him as key to modernizing the public image of the British royal family. But for all its historical importance, one of her most quoted lines is a simple, personal plea for privacy.

Why do Queen Victoria’s words still matter today?

What gives Victoria’s quote its power is that it reflects a deeply human experience embedded within a historic royal moment. It serves as a reminder to the reader that even the most powerful public figures can feel overwhelmed by life-changing events. Her desire for solitude was not a sign of weakness. This was indicative of emotional intelligence, awareness and the need to process responsibility internally before stepping into public duty.Victoria’s words convey a more sober message in a world that often rewards constant activity, public display and quick reaction. Sometimes you need silence before you can move forward. After more than 180 years, this quote still speaks not only about monarchy but also about human emotions.

Tower protest: How Basanti, who rewrote Sholay's script, has Veeru syndrome
Women are climbing water tanks, mobile towers and even high tension poles to create pressure on the system

Varanasi/Prayagraj: In Sholay, Veeru had climbed on the water tank for Basanti. Recently, the districts of Purvanchal have seen several iterations of that iconic cinematic moment, but with a gender twist.Women are climbing water tanks, mobile towers and even high tension poles to create pressure on the system. Sometimes it works. More often than not, it has the opposite effect. In Ballia, Jaunpur, AzamgarhIn Pratapgarh and beyond, many people have faced cases of endangering life, creating public nuisance and wasting government resources.Last month, a girl from a village in Sukhpura police station area of Ballia was in the news for about a fortnight. After filing an FIR against her boyfriend and three others alleging sexual harassment, she climbed a mobile phone tower on April 7. The police worked for hours to bring her down and eventually called her boyfriend. He agreed and the couple got married on 17 April at the Maharishi Bhrigu temple. After this the groom took his wife home. But a minor girl from a village under Nevadhiya police station of Jaunpur was not so lucky. On April 2, she climbed a mobile tower in her village and demanded that her boyfriend be released from jail and that they be allowed to live together. She was jailed on kidnapping and rape charges after her family lodged an FIR over her escape. After bringing the girl down, the police sent her to the Government Girls Home in Varanasi. From March 29 to April 21, Pratapgarh police have registered five cases where women aged between 18 and 22 climbed a water tank or mobile tower for their love. These incidents came to light from Leelapur, Kotwali, Kunda and Patti areas. The first case was reported on March 29, when a woman, upset over a romantic dispute, climbed a mobile tower with her boyfriend, demanding his marriage. It took more than two hours for the police to pacify him before they brought him down safely in the presence of family members. In April, a woman in the Patti area, upset that her family had arranged her marriage against her wishes, climbed a tower and refused to come down. However, through persuasion and counselling, the police brought her down safely and advised her family not to go ahead with the marriage without her consent. A senior official said times of India At least five cases of women climbing water tanks or mobile towers were reported within a month. But, every time the police managed to bring them down safely. Yet, this trend has shocked the force, as women are using such risky acts to press for their demands. In Shahganj, Jaunpur, a 19-year-old girl climbed an electric pole demanding marriage with a young man who was jailed for having physical relations with the promise of marriage. After being released on bail, he went to Mumbai. Police, QRT and firefighters struggled for hours to bring him down.In Ghosi, Mau, a minor girl climbed a mobile tower on May 2, demanding marriage with her lover. She came down after he called her and promised her marriage. The family members had opposed this match. One such case came to light from Saraymir in Azamgarh. The police are usually lenient in such cases, but they booked most of the people who climbed the towers. A man climbed a mobile tower in Azamgarh’s Bilariaganj on April 23 and started demanding marriage from the girl he loved as her marriage was fixed with someone else. After about two hours of drama, the police brought him down but took him into custody.A 17-year-old boy from Bansdih, Ballia had to pay a heavy price for climbing a 33,000 volt high-tension electricity tower on April 19. He climbed the 80-meter high tower, demanding to speak to a 16-year-old girl from his village. He was taken down and caught. In Nagra and Bansdih areas too, two people had to face legal action after climbing a tower for love.Officials said incidents of people climbing towers, overhead tanks and electric poles are not new or surprising. Such protests happen everywhere and people make different demands, often regarding property disputes, jobs or police action in criminal cases. But he acknowledged that climbing towers to seek marriage or relationship has become a growing trend.“We have a clear SOP to deal with people climbing towers, overhead tanks or pillars. Trained, experienced senior officers in such situations psychologically interact with them,” said ADG Varanasi zone Piyush Mordia. “If a girl has climbed up, we deploy a team of women officers, women constables and anyone who can pacify her.”Psychologists like BHU professor Rakesh Pandey said these incidents are rarely suicidal. This can be called instrumental aggression displayed towards the family or institution for some important pursuit. This can be called the ultimate bargain, he said, as whenever they climb a tower or pole people surround them with mobile cameras and solve their purpose of attracting attention.“They try to create panic without caring whether it harms personal or family reputation,” said Dr Brijesh Pandey, a sociologist at the Women’s College. “Most of the people involved come from classes where the elders are less educated and pay less attention to ensuring that the younger generations retain their original culture.”Officials said the post-modern era, where advanced communication devices like smartphones are an integral part of life, is also pushing people to claim a separate identity.

‘I would rather die in my own country’: Why immigrants are choosing voluntary departure rather than detention or asylum in the US

'I would rather die in my own country': Why immigrants are choosing voluntary departure rather than detention or asylum in the US

A growing number of immigrants to the US are abandoning their legal cases and choosing to leave the country, many of whom are being held in detention centers. This comes as voluntary departures have increased under the Trump administration.Court data obtained by the Vera Institute of Justice shows that immigration judges issued more than 80,000 “voluntary departure” orders between January 2025 and March this year. The figures were shared with The Washington Post. The current data shows a sharp increase compared to the previous administration, when about 11,400 people opted in over the same period.Voluntary departure allows immigrants to leave the US without a formal deportation order. This can sometimes make it easier to legally withdraw in the future. But it also means giving up any ongoing claims to remain in the country, including asylum applications.According to the data, more than 70 percent of those granted voluntary departure under the Trump administration were in immigration detention at the time they made the request. That’s a higher proportion than during former President Joe Biden’s tenure, when the majority of people went from outside detention. The Trump administration has promoted voluntary departures as part of its immigration crackdown, with MAGA officials advertising the option in detention centers and online.Voluntary departure is a long-standing legal option for people who are unlikely to win their cases in immigration court. Applicants must generally show good moral character, have no serious criminal record, and agree to leave within a certain time frame at their own expense. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not directly note the increase in numbers, but said the administration was enforcing immigration laws more strictly. In a statement, the department said: “Biden and [then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas] Recklessly introduced millions of undocumented illegal aliens into American communities – and they abused multiple loopholes to do so, “saying Trump officials were now enforcing the law” as it was actually written.During the latter half of the Biden administration, judges issued about 750 voluntary departure orders a month. After Donald Trump returned to office, the number began to exceed 6,000 in a single month following immigration enforcement raids. Many immigrants are now detained for months awaiting trial, while very few are released on bond.Migration experts say the policy change has changed the way people experience the system.“It’s quite clear that the trend has increased, with more people in detention seeking voluntary departure as an alternative to remaining in detention,” said Ariel Ruiz Soto of the Migration Policy Institute. Some immigrants cite harsh conditions and long periods of detention as reasons for leaving.

  • A 33-year-old Middle Eastern man detained after crossing the US-Mexico border in 2024 reportedly suffered panic attacks and mental health deterioration in custody. With no criminal record and claims of religious persecution, he decided to leave after months in detention. His brother said: “He told me: ‘Look, I’m dying here anyway. I’d rather die in my own country than go to the place where I’m going to die,'” he said, adding, “‘I can’t live without freedom.'”
  • Another case involved Roman Husar, a Ukrainian artist who arrived in the US with his family under a Biden-era sponsorship program. After immigration detention and a rejected bond hearing, he opted for voluntary departure. “No one gets asylum here in Texas. No one,” he said. “People, they’ve been rejected, rejected, rejected.” His lawyer later said: “This type of voluntary departure is not voluntary,” he said. “This is coercion.”

The states with the highest numbers include Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and California, which have thousands of cases combined.

Smart sensors to be installed on old major NH bridges for early warning alerts
AI generated image used for representation

New Delhi: For continuous ‘health monitoring’ of major and extra long old bridges on NH, highway owning agencies will now install advanced sensors for quick warning in case of abnormal behavior so that corrective steps can be taken before any accident. The Road Transport Ministry has issued a standardized tender document (RFP) for procurement of Continuous Structure Monitoring System for bridges, which highway owning agencies and their engineers can use to invite bids. This is important keeping in mind that there is a dire need to monitor the behavior of old major bridges on the NH network of the country.Installing sensors to monitor bridge health is part of new major bridges, but a large number of older bridges do not have them, officials said. “We need to ensure that old bridges are continuously monitored. Now regional officials of NHAI, road transport ministry and NHIDCL can use the document to rope in the firms,” said an official. The agencies engaged will be responsible for the supply, installation, commissioning and long-term operation and maintenance of advanced equipment designed to track the structural integrity of bridges in real time. This involves the deployment of a wide range of sensors, along with hardware for data acquisition, transmission and reporting, enabling authorities to detect early warning signs of stress, damage or failure.According to the document, such works will be divided into two phases – the first phase will be for six months for installation and commissioning of the bridge health monitoring system and the second phase will include operation and maintenance of the system, ensuring interruption free functioning for at least 10 years.
