3 people died due to fear of deadly Hantavirus on Atlantic cruise ship, British passenger is in critical condition
Cruise ship health emergency raises global concern over rare hantavirus cases / Image: File

A luxury expedition cruise traveling across the Atlantic has been hit by an outbreak of suspected hantavirus, which has already killed three people and left several others seriously ill, prompting an international health response involving South African and Dutch authorities.According to the BBC, the outbreak surfaced on the MV Hondius, an expedition cruise ship sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde. World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that one case of hantavirus has been found to be positive, while several additional suspected infections are under investigation.Authorities said the first victim was a 70-year-old Dutch traveler who became seriously ill during the trip. He later died when the ship approached the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. South African health officials confirmed that his remains were awaiting repatriation to the Netherlands.Shortly afterwards his 69-year-old wife also fell ill and later died in a Johannesburg hospital after being evacuated from the ship. BBC reports have identified the couple as Dutch citizens who traveled together on the expedition.A third death has also been linked to the outbreak, while a 69-year-old British traveler remains in intensive care in Johannesburg. Two crew members reportedly require immediate medical treatment as authorities continue to monitor passengers and staff on board the ship.

What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal disease that is usually spread by contact with infected rodents, particularly through contact with rodent urine, feces, or saliva. Humans can inhale contaminated particles from the air, causing serious respiratory illness and organ complications. This virus is uncommon but feared because symptoms can progress rapidly. Initial symptoms are often flu-like, including fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and headache. In severe cases, patients may develop life-threatening breathing difficulties and internal complications.Online discussions around the outbreak have focused particularly on the possibility of the Andes strain of hantavirus, a variant previously associated with limited person-to-person transmission in South America. However, officials have not publicly confirmed the exact strain associated with the cruise ship incident. The fact that the virus originated in Argentina has raised further concern among infectious disease experts because South America has historically recorded cases involving the Andes virus strain.

Officials are trying to stop the crisis

Health officials in several countries are now coordinating efforts to prevent further spread and evacuate affected passengers.Dutch authorities are reportedly arranging the repatriation of symptomatic travelers and the transfer of bodies linked to the outbreak. Meanwhile, South African medical teams are handling emergency treatment and monitoring cases of possible exposure linked to the ship. The outbreak has also rekindled fears about the health risks of cruise ships, with social media users comparing the incident to previous onboard disease scares that spread rapidly in different marine environments. Online discussions ranged from concerns over medical preparedness onboard ships to criticism of long-haul cruise operations in remote waters.Despite the increased attention, officials have stressed that the investigation is ongoing and many suspected cases have not yet been confirmed.

global context

The incident is quickly becoming one of the deadliest cruise-related health concerns of the year, due to both the death toll and the rare nature of the virus.Cruise ships are designed to operate as self-contained floating communities, but infectious disease outbreaks can be especially difficult to manage when ships are far from major medical facilities. The remote Atlantic route taken by the MV Hondius reportedly complicated emergency response efforts and patient transfers.Public health experts are expected to monitor the situation closely in the coming days as laboratory testing continues. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether additional passengers were exposed before the sick passengers were evacuated.WHO and national health agencies are expected to issue further updates as the investigation evolves.

Vijay’s TVK party emerged as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu; All you need to know about its journey. india news

Vijay's TVK party emerged as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu; All you need to know about its journey
Vijay’s TMK has emerged as a major force in Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) is emerging as a strong force. Tamil NaduTrends show dramatic growth for the fledgling organisation, which is challenging established players like DMK and AIADMK in the state.Tamil Nadu is witnessing a rare three-way contest, according to early data from the Election Commission of India. According to early trends, Vijay’s party has crossed the majority mark and overtaken the ruling DMK, while the AIADMK is in third place. However, trends visible on television networks indicate a far stronger bounce for TVK, with projections indicating that the party may outperform both the DMK and AIADMK alliances and potentially form the government in the state on its own. This marks a surprising departure from pre-election expectations. Most exit polls had predicted a comfortable return for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance under Chief Minister MK Stalin. However, the India Today-Axis My India and Times Now-JVC surveys predicted a strong opening for TVK. The Axis My India Poll projected the TVK to win between 98 and 120 seats, putting it in direct competition with the DMK, which was projected to win 92–110 seats.his journeyVijay formally launched TVK in 2024, positioning it as a people-centric alternative to Tamil Nadu’s strong Dravidian parties. His campaign blended welfare promises with an anti-corruption message and youth outreach, drawing huge crowds and benefiting from his widespread popularity across the state. The party’s early performance suggests that this appeal has translated into electoral impact faster than anticipated.Since its inception, Vijay has steered the party away from traditional coalition-building, instead focusing on solo launches aimed at capturing the youth and anti-incumbency votes. The party’s platform, centered on “social justice and transparent governance”, appears to have resonated deeply in both urban and rural areas.Tamil Nadu is one of the major states, along with Assam, West Bengal and Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry, where elections were held in April. While voting concluded in Tamil Nadu on April 23, the focus has now shifted to whether TVK’s lead will hold through the counting of votes and translate into a historic mandate. If current trends continue, the rise of TVK could signal a structural shift in Tamil Nadu politics, breaking the long-standing bipolar dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. For Vijay, this will be one of the most successful political debuts in recent memory – transforming him from a cinema icon to a central player in the state’s power equation.

66 body bags on the lawn of Australian Parliament: There is a clear message behind it

66 body bags on the lawn of Australian Parliament: There is a clear message behind it
Image: AAP News/DailyMail

Sixty-six body bags are being laid out on the lawn of Parliament House – one for every Australian who dies every day from tobacco use. The body bags emerged ahead of the first Senate inquiry hearing on Australia’s illicit tobacco crisis on Monday. Health advocates called for the protests to end because words alone were no longer cutting it. They really needed MPs to see what 66 dead people looked like, lying in black bags on the grass in front of the building where the nation makes its decisions. So why now? Because the Senate is hearing from Australian Border Force officers, medical experts and the Cancer Council about how to tackle the flood of illicit tobacco into Australia. Tobacco lobbyists want the government to reduce cigarette excise duty to harass illicit traders. Basically, they’re saying: If we make smoking cheaper, people won’t buy the crappy stuff. It’s an argument that sounds clever for about five seconds, then falls apart.Laura Hunter, chief executive of the Australian Council on Smoking and Health, called the proposal a “self-serving red herring”. She said: “If you’re comfortable with making all cigarettes cheaper, you’re also comfortable with more people dying from smoking.” ‘You can’t tackle a public health crisis by making Australia’s deadliest product cheaper and more accessible, by engaging in a race to the bottom with criminals.‘When cigarettes are cheaper, more people adopt them, more people are already addicted to smoking and fewer people quit.’According to the DailyMail, quoting Hunter, there are more than 40,000 outlets selling tobacco in Australia, far more than supermarkets, petrol stations and pharmacies. Smoking causes at least 16 types of cancer, including lung, mouth, liver, bladder, bowel and kidney cancer. This is not an evil that affects only the smoker. The health system pays for it. Families suffer. That’s what those 66 bags on the Parliament lawn represent—not some abstract number, but real data.

IPL 2026, MI vs LSG: Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants fighting for survival with threat of early exit looming

Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are in all sorts of trouble and will not have much margin for error when they face each other in their IPL 2026 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, May 4. Both teams are in the bottom two places of the table and need something more than special to turn their campaign around.

For MI, there’s no place to hide, Because another defeat would more or less end their campaign. No team in the history of IPL Have qualified for the playoffs with 12 points and that is why the upcoming game is so important. On the other hand, the super giants are also not in a comfortable position, And with a net run rate of -1.106, he faces a tough task too.

Can Lucknow make a comeback?

When the Super Giants started their campaign with two wins from their first three matches, they were looking in pretty good shape. But as the tournament progressed, they went from bad to worse. After losing their last five matches, LSG are looking for inspiration to turn their fortunes around. Mohsin Khan burst onto the scene with a five-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders, but Rinku Singh’s heroics ensured KKR got their last win in Lucknow.

Rishabh Pant’s struggles with the bat have not helped the Super Giants to any extent. Given how challenging the conditions at Wankhede can be for the bowlers, Mohammed Shami’s role will be crucial against MI and this is where his experience could prove crucial. With MI not in the best of form, LSG may see this as an opportunity to get back to winning ways.

Will Rohit Sharma make a comeback against LSG?

It has been a long time since Rohit Sharma last played, He was ruled out at the start of the tournament with a hamstring injury. In his absence, there have been several changes in MI’s top order. With the team just one poor game away from elimination, MI are desperate for Rohit to return to the top of the order and make the kind of impact he has often produced in the past.

If Rohit makes a comeback, Will Jack will definitely be the player to return. Big scores are important at Wankhede and Rohit’s return will give a huge boost to his batting.

MI have struggled with the bat, with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya not performing consistently so far. They also faltered in the death overs against CSK and overall the team was far from its best, which makes Rohit’s comeback all the more important.

The fact that they have used 23 players so far in the tournament shows how volatile Mumbai have been in IPL 2026.

Bumrah’s time to roar

IPL 2026 has been no less than a nightmare for Jasprit Bumrah. He has neither taken wickets regularly nor managed to curb the scoring. With an economy rate of 8.60 and just three wickets at an average of 94.66 in nine matches, this is a far cry from what you would expect from a bowler of that calibre. At the Wankhede this season, Bumrah has struggled even more, taking just one wicket in five matches at an economy rate of 9.80.

However, he showed signs of returning to form against CSK, where he dismissed Sanju Samson and finished with figures of 3-0-20-1. But everyone knows what Bumrah is capable of at his best. If MI need to rediscover that form, it needs to happen now, otherwise their wait for a sixth IPL title could get even longer.

Wankhede: pitches and conditions

The Wankhede Stadium pitch has been excellent for the batsmen, with the average score in five matches so far being 217. On the second day, SRH chased 244 against MI, underlining how difficult the conditions are for bowlers in Mumbai. Teams batting first will need at least 230 runs to put up a fight. Therefore, chasing should be the preferred option.

There is no chance of rain and we can expect the entire match in Mumbai on Monday. The sky will be clear and the temperature will be around 31 degrees Celsius. However, conditions will be humid, making it important for players to stay well hydrated.

MI vs LSG: Head to Head

Mumbai Indians have a poor record against Lucknow Supergiants and have won only two out of eight matches. At the Wankhede, MI have lost two of the three matches they have played against the Super Giants. However, in their last match, Mumbai had defeated Lucknow by 54 runs.

MI vs LSG: Predicted XI

MI Predicted XI: Will Jacques, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dheer, Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya (c), Robin Minnes, Trent Boult, Krish Bhagat, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar.

Effect Sub: Raghu Sharma

LSG Probable XI: Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (captain) (wicketkeeper), Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Mukul Chaudhary, George Linde, Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav, Digvesh Singh Rathi, Mohsin Khan.

Effect Sub: Himmat Singh

Tension deepens in the strait: Iran attacks cargo ship sailing near Hormuz

Britain’s maritime surveillance agency said a bulk carrier sailing near Iran’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by several small vessels. In a brief statement on Sunday, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said all crew members aboard the unidentified vessel were “reported safe” after the incident, which occurred 11 nautical miles (20 km) west of Sirik, Iran. The agency also confirmed “no environmental impacts were reported.” The location of the incident, Sirik, is located on the Iranian side of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that is at the center of the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Indian bound LPG tanker MT Sarva Shakti heads towards Visakhapatnam after crossing Hormuz

Since the war began on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz has been a flash point as Iran has tightened its grip on the region, disrupting the movement of oil, gas and fertilizer shipments through the passage and sending global prices soaring. According to Al Jazeera, the United States began a retaliatory blockade of Iranian ports on April 13, shortly after a fragile ceasefire was implemented.US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday that 49 ships attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports have now been redirected under the blockade. “To date, 49 commercial vessels have been redirected to comply with the blockade. The U.S. military remains fully committed to enforcement,” CENTCOM said in a social media post.In a separate development, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will start guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz from Monday. US Central Command said the operation would involve guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft and 15,000 service members, although a US official clarified that the initiative is not an escort mission. This announcement drew a sharp reaction from Tehran. Ibrahim Azizi, a senior Iranian official and head of the parliament’s national security commission, warned that any US intervention would violate the ceasefire. “Any US interference in the new maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a violation of the ceasefire,” he said in a posting on Twitter. He added, “Trump’s delusional posts will not manage the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf!”His comments highlight growing tensions over the US role in maritime movement through the chokepoint, where thousands of sailors are already stranded on ships due to prolonged disruptions.Meanwhile, on the diplomatic front, Donald Trump said US representatives are having “very positive discussions” with Iran as the two sides continue to exchange peace overtures. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it was currently reviewing the US response to Tehran’s latest proposal.

Government to screen all children for diabetes, start lifelong free care under RBSK India News

Government to screen all children for diabetes, launch lifelong free care under RBSK

New Delhi: In a major policy shift, the Center will now screen all children from birth to 18 years for diabetes and provide free, lifelong treatment through the public health system, and expand its flagship Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) to address the growing burden of the disease in younger age groups. The guidance document, released by the Union Health Ministry at the National Public Health Summit, lays down a structured national framework for the screening, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of childhood diabetes. It integrates community- and school-based screening with district-level care, aiming to ensure early detection and continuity of treatment. The rollout is part of the centre’s revamp of RBSK 2.0, which adopts a lifecycle approach from birth to 18 years and expands its “4D” framework to include mental health and behavioral conditions as well as non-communicable diseases such as diabetes. The guidelines also flag increased lifestyle risks – including poor diet, low physical activity and increased screen exposure – and introduce digital tracking and structured follow-up systems to strengthen continuity of care.Under the protocol, mobile health teams will screen children in schools and Anganwadi centers for symptoms such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, fatigue and weight loss – the “4T” warning signs. Suspected cases will undergo immediate blood glucose testing and will be referred to district NCD clinics for confirmation and treatment. This step has been taken amid increasing concern regarding diabetes in the young population. While type 1 diabetes is the most common type in children and requires lifelong insulin, the document notes an increase in type 2 diabetes in teens, largely due to increasing obesity and sedentary habits.Experts say prevention will be important. Dr Jugal Kishore, professor and former head of community medicine, director of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, said, “Obesity among children is increasing rapidly and with it we are seeing more diabetes. Lifestyle changes need to start early, especially at the school level, as habits formed over the years shape long-term health. It will be important to strengthen school-based health programs and ensure consistent implementation.”District hospitals are positioned as the backbone of care, offering a comprehensive free package that includes diagnostic services, lifelong insulin therapy, glucometers, test strips and regular follow-up. The program also includes counseling and training for families on insulin use, monitoring and emergency care. This framework combines early detection with advanced care and standardized treatment to prevent complications. Officials said timely diagnosis leads to normal development and better outcomes. The initiative aims to reduce mortality, reduce financial burden and ensure uninterrupted care, now the focus is on implementation.
