Eviction notice to Delhi Gymkhana: Elite club members plan legal fight against Centre's order, demand 'no disorder'

New Delhi: Several members of the exclusive Delhi Gymkhana Club have launched a signature campaign to move court against the Centre’s order directing the institute to vacate its premises in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5.The members plan to file a petition on Monday challenging the government’s decision to take back the sprawling 27.3-acre property located at 2, Safdarjung Road, next to the Prime Minister’s residence on Lok Kalyan Marg.Brigadier Harinder Pal Bedi (retd), a long-time member of the club, said the members had gathered on Sunday to sign an authorization letter for legal proceedings. “Many club members have signed the petition, and more are expected to sign it by tonight. Clubs have been an important part of our lives for decades, and this order has come as a shock to many of us,” Bedi was quoted as saying by PTI.Delhi Gymkhana received the notice on May 22 from the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The order sought “re-entry and restoration” of the land occupied by the club, citing considerations of public purpose and national interest, including the need to strengthen defense and governance infrastructure in the highly sensitive area of the national capital. The Center said the land parcel, spread over 27.3 acres, was required for “urgent institutional needs, governance infrastructure and public-interest projects”, integrated with the surrounding government land. Invoking clause 4 of the Permanent Lease Deed, the Government ordered that the entire property, including buildings, lawns, structures and fittings, would vest in the President of India through L&DO after taking possession on 5 June.Amid the growing controversy, the club has written to the Center requesting that there be “no disorder” in its functioning and operations. In a letter addressed to L&DO on May 23, the club urged officials not to take any disruptive action until there is clarity on issues such as transfer and possibility of alternative land allotment. The club said the move could impact around 14,000 members and users, in addition to more than 500 employees associated with the organisation. It also stated that discussions were already underway with the government regarding increasing the lease rent and a writ petition challenging the revised lease rent was pending before the Delhi High Court.According to the communication, the club is currently being managed by a general committee appointed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs following the order of the National Company Law Tribunal in 2022 until an elected body takes over. The club also highlighted the improvement in its finances in recent years, saying that the projected financial results for 2023-24 showed a profit of Rs 925.10 lakh, compared to a loss of Rs 1,239.26 lakh in 2021-22.General PK Sehgal (retd), associated with the club since 1972, said the members have unanimously decided to challenge the order.“Many former Presidents of India, senior military officers, politicians and bureaucrats have been members of Delhi Gymkhana over the years. It is one of the most prestigious clubs in Delhi, and the sudden decision to withdraw it has raised concerns among members about its future and where the club will be shifted,” he said.Established as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club on July 3, 1913, the institution originally served British administrators and military officers during the colonial period. After independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped from its name, while most of the existing structures date back to the 1930s.

Falta repoll result 2026: BJP's Debangshu Panda wins by around 1.5 lakh votes, TMC's Jahangir Khan restricted to 7k
Falta assembly constituency

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Debangshu Panda won the re-poll in Falta by a huge margin of 1,09,021 votes, defeating Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi. During this time, All India Trinamool Congress Candidate Jahangir Khan, who withdrew from active campaigning but remained on the ballot, finished fourth with 7,783 votes. In the recent assembly elections, TMC gave the ticket to Jahangir Khan, who had announced just two days before the polls that he was ‘withdrawing’. However, he remained on the ballot as per Election Commission rules, according to which the date for formal withdrawal had already passed.Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari hailed the victory and took a dig at TMC as the BJP took a lead of over 1 lakh votes just before the results were formally declared. He said, “The infamous ‘Diamond Harbour’ model has turned into ‘Trinamool’s loss-bar’ model!!! First of all, I salute the people of Falta – the divine population – who sent Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shri Debangshu Pandya to the Assembly in the by-election for Falta constituency with an overwhelming mandate.”Thanking the voters for making his ‘plea’ come true, he said, “I am especially grateful to the voters of Falta; I had appealed to them to give victory to the BJP candidate by a margin of one lakh votes, and the victory margin has crossed one lakh eight thousand. Through further development, we will repay this debt of yours. We are committed to building a golden Falta. A party devoid of principles or ideals, which had turned into a mafia syndicate, “His skeletal condition has been exposed.” Upon losing power. By misusing the state machinery, it looted public funds, appropriated people’s hard-earned money, and through a culture of syndicates and threats, its leaders treated the country as their personal fiefdom.Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of three-time Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and no. Number 2 in her All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), she represents Diamond Harbor in the Lok Sabha. This made Falta a high-risk seat for the party. The Election Commission ordered a full re-poll at all 285 polling stations in the Falta constituency on 21 May, citing “serious electoral crimes and subversion of the democratic process” during the 29 April voting. The results will be declared after re-polling. On 24th May.Falta is one of the 294 assembly constituencies of West Bengal. It is a general category seat and is located in South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Diamond Harbor parliamentary constituency, which consists of seven assembly constituencies. The constituency saw two major controversies: BJP’s lotus symbol was found stuck on EVMs at several booths, prompting the Election Commission of India to order an investigation; And the clash between UP-cadre IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, appointed as a police observer by the election panel, and local powerful leader Trinamool’s Khan.In the 2021 assembly elections, AITC’s Shankar Kumar Naskar won the seat, making it a hat-trick of wins for the party. Before Naskar, Trinamool’s Tamonash Ghosh was the winning candidate in both the 2011 and 2016 elections. In 2021, AITC secured 55.61% vote share, while BJP, which fielded Bidhan Parui, got 36.75% votes.

Perungudi biomining crosses 50%, compost plant will be ready by June 30

Chennai: About half of the biomining work at the Perungudi dumpyard has been completed, and a new composting facility at the site is expected to be ready by June 30.GCC Commissioner Dr GS Sameeran said the biomining project in the 225-acre dumpyard, started in 2021 at a cost of ₹350 crore, has so far reclaimed 94 acres of land. The dumpyard has been divided into six remediation packages, of which packages 3, 4 and 5 have been completed. He directed the officials to expedite the remaining works under the second phase. The second phase of the project costing ₹53.6 crore involves processing of 5.5 lakh cubic meters of old waste. The reclaimed site is also being prepared for new waste-processing infrastructure, with construction of a 100 tonne per day capacity compost plant expected to be completed by June 30.Residents groups said the progress of work has been delayed due to the long-running dispute. There was a two-year arbitration issue involving a contractor, and after a long delay, work resumed, said A Francis, president of the Federation of Thoraipakkam Residents Welfare Associations. “For the last two years, officials have been saying that work is in progress. There is some fencing activity near the Ramsar site. Officials should ensure that the site is safe from dumping and encroachment,” he said.Waste management experts said the compost plant can help only if source separation is improved. The new composting facility in Perungudi is a positive step and is better than relying on large-scale mixed-waste processing plants, where waste is incinerated, making the process more toxic, said Geo Damin, a former state solid waste management committee member. “Decentralized systems are more secure and more sustainable,” he said, adding that such facilities, however, can function effectively only if door-to-door collection and source separation are properly implemented. “Without household-level separation, even composting plants will struggle to operate efficiently,” he said.

Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur (IPL)

The fast bowler forced Jadeja to slap the ball towards cover at the wrong time while bowling a slower ball outside the off stump. As soon as the catch was taken, Shardul went into celebration, roaring with joy and elation at the thought that he had removed the dangerous all-rounder at a crucial moment.Meanwhile, Jadeja had already started walking back. But within a few seconds the whole atmosphere changed. The no-ball siren suddenly sounded as replays showed that Shardul had overstepped. The dismissal was immediately overturned, leaving the MI pacer stunned. Trump Turnaround: Open the Straits, Stop the Wars

Trump Turnaround: Open the Straits, Stop the Wars

TOI correspondent from Washington: “Iran never won the war, but it also never lost the negotiation,” US President Donald Trump said during his first term in office in January 2020. It’s a row that may be coming back to haunt his second-term administration. After weeks of military escalation against Israel as well as Iran, a chastened Trump is now moving toward an agreement that falls well short of the maximalist goals declared at the beginning of the conflict: no “complete and total surrender” by Iran, no regime collapse in Tehran, no verified dismantling of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, and no surrender of all highly enriched uranium reserves.Instead, the immediate US objective has been somewhat limited: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and preventing a broader global economic recession caused by the disruption of Gulf energy shipments. Trump said on Saturday that the strait would be “opened up” under a new understanding with Tehran, possibly due to pressure from other Gulf allies. Ironically, the strait was functioning normally before the US-Israeli military operation began.“An agreement has been substantially negotiated between the United States, Iran and several other countries, and is yet to be finalized… The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon,” Trump said on “Truth Social.” In leaks to US media, US officials claimed that the proposed agreement included a pledge by Tehran to give up its uranium and reopen the strait unconditionally. But Iran’s state-linked Fars news agency said there was no such commitment, stressing that Tehran would continue to exercise sovereign control over passage routes, timing, permits and access through the strategic waterway, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.According to ongoing reports in Washington diplomatic circles, the proposed framework could include a series of concessions by the US, including partial sanctions relief for Iran, access to approximately $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets and a phased reopening of maritime traffic in exchange for renewed but undefined discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program.

Parminderpal Singh, Indian man arrested by ICE in Los Angeles due to criminal record, may face deportation

An Indian man with a lengthy criminal record has been arrested by US immigration officials in Los Angeles and may now face deportation proceedings, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.ICE said Parminderpal Singh, 26, a citizen of India, was arrested this week and is in immigration detention pending removal from the United States.Authorities said Singh’s criminal history includes crimes including vehicle theft, grand theft, trespassing and vandalism. ICE has not yet released further details about his immigration status or any upcoming court proceedings. The arrests come as U.S. immigration authorities continue to step up enforcement operations targeting noncitizens accused or convicted of criminal offenses. In recent years, many Indian nationals have faced detention or deportation proceedings by ICE under a variety of circumstances, including criminal convictions, visa violations, and outdated immigration orders. One of the most famously discussed cases involved Subramaniam Vedam, who spent 43 years in a Pennsylvania prison in a murder case that was later overturned. In 2025, ICE took him into custody shortly after his release due to a separate decades-old deportation order tied to an earlier drug conviction. Vedam had lived in the US since childhood and faced possible deportation to India.Another case involved 53-year-old interpreter Meenu Batra, who had been living in the US for more than three decades. He was detained by ICE during a work trip in Texas in 2026 after authorities cited an old deportation order despite having legal work authorization and humanitarian protection status. He was later released after legal intervention and after a judge questioned his detention.US authorities have also deported Indian citizens convicted of financial crimes. In 2025, Angad Singh Chandhok was deported to India after serving a prison sentence in an international technical-assistance scam targeting elderly Americans. He helped operate shell companies that were used to launder millions of dollars obtained through fraud. In another recent case, Aman Kumar was arrested by ICE in California in 2026 after authorities released him following a hit-and-run incident involving a four-year-old child. ICE alleged that Kumar was living in the country illegally at the time of his arrest outside the Fresno courthouse.
