Meet Antoine Moses: Canadian 'tree lover' sets second Guinness World Record by planting 47,460 trees on Kenyan coast in just 24 hours
PC: Guinness World Records

On the mud flats outside Mombasa, the tide does not remain constant for long. It pulls in, retracts, leaving a surface that looks soft but behaves like something less forgiving once it’s penetrated. Typically on a stretch of coast shaped by salt, heat and passing weather systems, a man spent almost an entire day moving in a narrow rhythm among already dug holes and plants waiting to be pressed into place. The work did not stop much until daylight or nightfall. It just kept going, a small group around it and a line of young mangroves slowly taking hold in the sand-heavy soil. What happened there later became a record, although on the ground it looked more like a repeat than a spectacle.

antony moses New green record set in Kenya with 47,460 mangrove plants planted

Antoine Moses arrived on the Kenyan coast with a sort of routine already ingrained in his activities. The work of planting mangroves is not gentle on the body. Each plant has to be established in wet ground that is shaken under pressure, often knee-deep in places where the tide has recently retreated. On April 30, that rhythm stretched over hours and blurred together. The goal was simple in words but less so in practice: thousands upon thousands of mangrove propagules were placed one after the other, without much change in speed. By the time day broke and night fell, the count had reached 47,460. This number later entered the record books, but at the time it was just a growing line of tiny plants disappearing in the mud.

Antony Moses: The canadian tree planter Redefining large-scale afforestation

Antoine Moses is a Canadian tree planter and environmental activist known for his endurance planting records undertaken in various parts of the world. His work is based largely on a particular corner of reforestation, where the focus is less on the function and more on how many saplings can be put into the ground in tightly measured time windows. Before turning his attention to records, he spent years working in commercial planting operations in Canada, enduring long seasonal shifts where thousands of trees are manually planted in rough terrain. Over time, that routine became the foundation of efforts to increase the pace of record field planting, first in North America and later internationally.

Before Kenya: Antoine Moses’ record of 23,000 trees in northern Alberta

This was not the first time he had attempted something on this scale. Years earlier, in northern Alberta, he had already pioneered a similar endurance planting session, setting a record that included more than 23,000 trees planted in a single day in 2021.Those earlier efforts were shaped by Canada’s commercial reforestation work, where planting cycles throughout the season can be repetitive and physically demanding. By the time he reached Kenya, that familiarity had turned into a kind of method, based on repetition rather than planning, where movement becomes almost automatic.

Why do mangroves matter in protecting fragile coastal shorelines?

Mangroves do not grow in clean conditions. They sit at the border where sea water meets land, bearing both flood and risk equally. In Mombasa, they matter for shore fishing communities and the stability of the coastline, although it is not always visible at first glance. What was being planted that day was part of that system, young seedlings meant to take root in unstable ground and eventually hold it together. The work was physical, but the result is a slow timeline. Nothing about it changes the coastline immediately. At some points during the day, the planting line continued even as the light diminished, with headlamps and small groups working around the same narrow section. The mud did not change its consistency with the hours.

A long journey behind one million trees planted in every season

By this stage, Antoine Moses was already known for his patient planting efforts. Previous records in Canada placed him among a small group of people who view tree planting less as an environmental gesture and more as sustained physical labor to one’s limits. He has said in earlier conversations that even before the Kenyan effort, he had planted a total of more than one million trees in various projects. This figure is difficult to imagine in practical terms, but it reflects years of seasonal work rather than a single campaign.

From shoreline work to millions of online viewers around the world

After the planting session ended, attention shifted to the shoreline. Short clips and photos began circulating through social media, where followers of his work already number in the millions. There are currently about 1.6 million people tuning in to his updates, and seeing snippets of planting days that might otherwise go unnoticed. He also runs a project called Entomos, which sits somewhere between storytelling and coordinating work for reforestation campaigns. It combines environmental planting efforts with digital documentation, often relying on third-party tracking systems like VeriTree to log and verify what has been planted and where it has been placed. The idea is not framed as activism in the traditional sense. This appears to be an attempt to link record keeping with physical activity, so that the latter can find out what happens in muddy areas without relying solely on memory.

Karnataka 'drama' not over yet? Siddaramaiah, Shivkumar in Delhi, Congress mulling next step

New Delhi: It appears that the dust and fury surrounding the change of power in Karnataka has not settled with Siddaramaiah’s resignation as chief minister as he and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who is expected to replace Sidda soon, are set to meet Congress state in-charge Randeep Surjewala in the national capital. Both the leaders will also meet Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge during the day.According to sources, the meeting mainly focused on finalizing Rajya Sabha candidates, Legislative Council (MLC) nominations and a possible cabinet reshuffle before the swearing-in of the new government. Sources further indicated that many ministers from the Siddaramaiah cabinet are unlikely to find a place in the possible DK Shivakumar-led cabinet. The party leadership is also considering the appointment of four deputy chief ministers to maintain social and regional balance in the new government.A day after announcing that he would step down as chief minister to pave way for Shivakumar as per the rotational formula agreed upon after his 2023 victory, Siddaramaiah expressed his desire to stay in Bengaluru instead of going to the Rajya Sabha, which was part of the offer made by the party high command.Siddaramaiah’s move to “partially agree” with top officials, despite being adamant on his point of not going to the capital for national politics, largely suggests that development could turn out to be a complex quagmire. On Friday, Siddaramaiah, Shivkumar and Surjewala will hold discussions with the top leadership of the party. Rajya Sabha candidates, MLC candidates and cabinet reshuffle will be the top priority during the meeting. Many ministers of the Siddaramaiah cabinet are unlikely to get a place in the DK Shivakumar-led cabinet. Congress sources told news agency ANI that four deputy CMs may be appointed to maintain social and regional balance in the government.

At a press conference on Thursday, the 77-year-old publicly confirmed that he had “politely” declined the party high command’s offer of a “national role” through a Rajya Sabha nomination, so that he could “remain active in state politics”. He has been chief minister for a little over three years, having been sworn in for his second term on May 20, 2023.As per plan, Siddaramaiah held a breakfast meeting with his cabinet colleagues, including his deputy and unofficial CM-in-waiting DK Shivakumar, at his official residence before submitting his resignation. What followed were hugs, tears and apologies.

Siddaramaiah’s comments in press brief

Before a large crowd gathered, Shivakumar held a closed-door meeting with the outgoing CM, hugged him and even touched his feet. For nearly two hours, ministers hovered around Siddaramaiah and explained the reason for his decision to resign after five decades in active politics. He told his colleagues, “I have no regrets. I am resigning with all my heart.”Sources said he informally mentioned that Shivakumar would take over as per the wishes of the party leadership. However, during the farewell press conference, Siddaramaiah avoided questions about his successor, while Shivakumar sat next to him, smiling during the conversation. He said, “Whatever the legislature party and the high command decide will be the chief minister.”The Congress high command is expected to call a CLP meeting in Bengaluru after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepts Siddaramaiah’s resignation, possibly on Friday. The outgoing CM reached Lok Bhawan at around 3 pm to submit his resignation. Since the Governor was out of the city, he submitted his resignation to the Special Secretary of Lok Bhavan, which was accepted on Friday morning.

NASA to reveal Artemis III crew as Moon mission preparations ramp up

NASA to reveal Artemis III crew as Moon mission preparations accelerate

The agency will unveil the Artemis III crew members and make an important progress statement regarding its Moon mission project in a broadcast event from Johnson Space Center, Houston, on June 9. As mentioned above, the Artemis III mission is one of several projects within NASA’s Artemis program. The project would see astronauts travel to the Moon in an Orion capsule aboard an SLS rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASAThrough an announcement on its website, it is claimed that the project will conduct critical rendezvous and docking operations for upcoming landings and exploration of the lunar surface.

Artemis III crew announcement marks a major milestone

NASA confirms astronauts assigned to Artemis III will be unveiled in a live broadcast NASA+ and NASA’s youtube Page. NASA noted, “There will be an update on the Artemis III mission and an announcement of the team selected for the test flight.” Additionally, it was also revealed that there will be limited interviews with the selected team after the announcement. The next mission will follow the recent success of the Artemis II crew test flight that took place at the beginning of the year. This mission, Artemis III, will involve sending four astronauts into space within the Orion spacecraft to conduct extensive testing regarding Orion’s ability to dock with commercial lunar landers before actual attempts to land on the Moon.As NASA said, “Artemis III sets the stage for surface operations”. NASA called the program “a golden age of innovation and exploration”.

NASA’s moon mission has entered a critical phase

Work for Artemis III is progressing rapidly in several NASA centers. Kennedy Space Center engineers recently powered up the Artemis III Orion crew module for the first time, an event that NASA says is critical to spacecraft tests and the integration of its systems. The agency further said that testing on the spacecraft’s computers, audio systems, hand controllers and life-support systems will continue before pressure and leak testing of the module.NASA also said that service modules provided by the European Space Agency are being tested simultaneously. Both modules will undergo integration later. In its latest statement, NASA said the Artemis missions are intended to increase their complexity as astronauts continue to explore different regions of the Moon for the purposes of scientific discovery and future Mars exploration. The mission will also help boost economic growth due to lunar infrastructure and deep space technologies.

The goal of the Artemis program is long-term lunar exploration

In many ways, the Artemis program can be considered NASA’s largest human spaceflight effort since the historic Apollo program. Although earlier plans included sending astronauts to the lunar surface with the help of the Orion spacecraft during Artemis III, NASA decided to update its mission design, focusing on test flight and safety before any crewed landing on the Moon.According to the new mission roadmap, Artemis III will include test flights of the commercial lunar landing system and other critical orbital operations. Meanwhile, Artemis IV is set to launch missions to land humans on the Moon in the next years.According to NASA officials, Artemis is about more than just returning astronauts to the Moon. In brief, the goal of the mission is to establish human presence on the surface of the Moon along with the development of technologies necessary for future human missions to Mars.NASA said: “Artemis will return humans to the Moon, where NASA will demonstrate critical exploration technologies and prepare for crewed missions to Mars.”With only a few days left until the official announcement of the crew, the entire space industry is eagerly awaiting NASA’s next big step in Moon exploration.

Exclusive: Arun Dhumal says IPL's explosive media rights growth unmatched in global sport

TimesofIndia.com in Dharamshala: Arun Singh Dhumal, President of Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council, is one of the few BCCI administrators who has consistently talked aggressively about the growth of the world’s richest cricket league and its media rights. In an exclusive conversation with TimesofIndia.com, Dhumal explained the value created by the IPL over the last 18 years and the reasons behind its remarkable growth.“If you look at the kind of rapid growth we have seen in IPL media rights since the beginning, it is unprecedented. We started with around Rs 8,200 crore for 10 years (2008-17). In the next five-year cycle (2018-22), the rights were sold for Rs 16,347 crore. And in the current cycle (2023-27), IPL media rights were sold for Rs 48,390 crore over five years,” Dhumal said.He said, “I am confident that given the kind of connect we have had with the fans and the attraction that this tournament has generated so far, the same trend will continue. You may have also seen two recent deals involving Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, which are currently in the process.”Dhumal said that IPL has set a benchmark in the sports business through its unprecedented media rights. He said, “There is no other property, especially a sports property, that has generated such returns in such a short period of time. It took decades for the National Football League (NFL) to become what it is today. Over these last 18 years, the kind of returns on investment that the IPL has generated is unprecedented.”

No other business would have given 20x returns in a period of almost 18 years

IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhumal

“No other business would have given 20 times returns in a period of about 18 years. India is also a unique country. Cricket is a game and a religion that binds the entire nation together.“And the USP of the IPL, in my opinion, is the quality of the games it produces. So many matches go down to the wire and, in a 3.5-hour game, every ball becomes an event. Given such attraction, I am fully hopeful that we will capture substantial value in the upcoming media rights cycle.”Dhumal said that beyond business, IPL has also played a big role in making India a cricket superpower.“The talent in India has always been there, but the question was how to provide opportunities to the players. That platform has been provided by the IPL. Even if we have to field three different teams for three bilateral series simultaneously, India will still be competitive. “This depth exists because of the IPL. I would also like to appreciate all our franchise partners for their contribution over the last 18-19 years,” he said.

Tata Motors expects rise in EV bookings due to rising fuel costs

New Delhi: Tata Motors Electric vehicles are witnessing a surge in demand as rising fuel prices and inflation concerns drive more consumers towards low-cost mobility options, especially in the affordable passenger vehicle segment.“There has been a sharp jump in just two months; it is about 2 to 2.5 times for EVs,” said Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. He said that now more and more families want at least one electric car. He said the growth in demand for EVs has accelerated in recent weeks as customers are rethinking ownership costs. The company currently produces around 10,000 EVs per month and plans to increase the capacity to 15,000 units monthly in the next three to four months. Italy on red alert as France, Portugal break records for hottest May day
Italy on red alert; Hottest May day recorded in Portugal

ROME: Italy issued a red alert warning for the capital Rome on Thursday and Portugal and France reported their hottest days in May, as Europe grapples with a heatwave that has broken records across the continent.Britain and France have already reported their hottest May days this week as the “heat dome” brought extreme temperatures not usually seen until midsummer across Western Europe.Several people have died in both Britain and France, mostly in drowning accidents, which authorities have linked to the extreme heat, while Portugal’s Health Minister Ana Paula Martins reported that the number of hospitalizations had increased due to the heatwave. The mercury reached 40.3C in Portugal’s central city of Mora on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 40C set in May 2001, the meteorological agency announced on Thursday, warning that there was a “high probability” the heatwave would last until early June.Italy has so far avoided record high temperatures but on Thursday authorities warned people in Rome and four northern cities to stay out of the sun.“We’re sweating a lot,” said Spanish tourist Nana Martínez García, who was trying to stay cool outside Rome’s Colosseum on Thursday in temperatures of 32C. “We’re drinking a lot of water so we can cool off,” she said, with her friend María Angeles Melinas Tello adding that they are “staying in the shade” whenever possible. The first red alert of the year in Italy – which also included Florence, Bologna, Brescia and Turin – warned of “potential negative effects on the health of healthy, active people”.Scientists say human-induced climate change is increasing such extremes, making weather events such as heat waves, droughts and floods more intense and frequent.tennis crisisThe extreme heat seemed to have passed in Britain, but much of France continued to heat up on Thursday. The temperature in the south-western city of Angoulême reached a maximum of 37.8C, breaking the May day temperature record set Monday and Tuesday, according to provisional data from Météo France in the evening.A school in the south-west was forced to close its doors on Thursday and Friday afternoons as temperatures in corridors reached 53C on Tuesday, causing pupils to fall ill, a local official said.“There was even someone who fainted and vomited,” said Florian Degas, an official in the Landes region. After record-breaking days in France on Monday and Tuesday, national weather service Meteo France said temperatures in Paris were expected to reach 34C and would remain on orange heatwave alert.Players are suffering from the heat at the French Open tennis tournament on the outskirts of Paris, with one player fainting after winning a grueling match that lasted hours.Italy’s Jannik Sinner, a strong favorite at the Roland Garros tournament, complained of dehydration, dizziness and nausea as he battled the heat following an unexpected second-round loss to rival Juan Manuel Cerundolo.Workers at the venue are spraying water on the red clay courts after every set and once the day’s matches are over, “we flood the courts with water, we soak them, so that the water can replenish the different layers that make up the clay”, said Philippe Vaillant, head maintenance worker. In Spain, national weather office Emet issued a heat warning for Friday for parts of the northeast and north, where temperatures were forecast to rise to 37C.The office said in a social media post that temperatures across Spain were “exceptionally high” for this time of year, compared to what is usually seen in summer. It predicted that temperatures would drop significantly over the next week.Back in Rome, American tourist Josh Renn said he has a game plan for the summer: “Get up early, work early, take lots of breaks. “Go sit in an air-conditioned restaurant, go to a museum, stay inside a little more during the hottest time of the day.”

'To please some Delhi boss': Sonam Wangchuk on Ladakh Lt Governor's warning over 'honorary cockroach' comment
Sonam Wangchuk (PTI Photo)

New Delhi: Worker Sonam Wangchuk The Congress on Thursday doubled its support for the CPI(M) Janata Party (CJP) and rejected Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s claim that he was unsure about the origins of the online movement. Wangchuk also questioned the LG’s publicizing of their recent meeting and said the tone of Saxena’s social media posts was in stark contrast to the cordial discussions he and his wife had with her.Recalling the meeting, Wangchuk said he was surprised by the message conveyed through Saxena’s post on X, which he described as a friendly and constructive discussion. He said, “I thought it was probably to please some boss somewhere in Delhi, who had instructed me to call and say such things, but there was no meeting like that, there was only a tweet.”The academic said he decided not to respond immediately and waited for several days before addressing the matter publicly. He said he deliberately avoided reacting to what he described as “childish behavior” and responded only after the comments were published by several newspapers. The exchange followed a post by Saxena on Tuesday after he met Wangchuk and his wife, HIAL co-founder Gitanjali J Angmo. In the post, the lieutenant governor said he had cautioned the activist against “weaving a misleading and provocative narrative” and claimed that Wangchuk had admitted that comparing Ladakh to Manipur was an “error of judgment.”Saxena also said that Wangchuk was unsure about the origins of the Cockroach Janata Party and had agreed to study the motivations of its founders before reconsidering his position if necessary.Rejecting those claims, Wangchuk said the meeting took place over tea and lasted for about an hour, in what he described as a warm and cordial atmosphere.“LG Ladakh invited us for a meeting over a cup of tea. We spent about an hour in a cordial and friendly atmosphere discussing his initiative, our work and possibilities of cooperation,” Wangchuk told news agency PTI.According to him, the Lieutenant Governor did talk about comparing Ladakh with Manipur and supporting the cockroach Janata Party, but no warning or reprimand was given during the discussion.“An hour after we left, we were surprised, and not a very pleasant one, to see that he had tweeted as if he had condemned us or cautioned us,” he said.Wangchuk also refuted Saxena’s claim that he had made the Manipur comparison a mistake. He said, “I don’t think it’s an error in my judgment. I still stand by it completely.” He also said that he had merely commented that using the example “could have been avoided” in these circumstances.“An avoidable error is very different from an error of judgment,” Wangchuk said.He also rejected suggestions that he had distanced himself from the cockroach Janata Party. According to Wangchuk, Saxena had described the movement as influenced by foreign powers and external funding sources, claims he neither accepted nor supported. He insisted, “I never said I was unsure about the origins and that I would reconsider my stance.”Wangchuk said the lieutenant governor had described the movement as “unfortunate” and accused it of being linked to organizations such as the Soros Foundation as well as countries including Pakistan and Bangladesh. He said, “Inwardly I was laughing at the story that he was telling to a person who was in jail under the NSA. You’re giving the same story to the person to whom it all happened,” he said. The Magsaysay Award winner reiterated his support for the online movement and described himself as a fan of its campaign. He said, “I’m a big fan of the Cockroach Party and I will remain so… I stand by what I said, I’m an honorary cockroach and I support it.”Wangchuk said that he had only expressed his willingness to review any evidence presented regarding the group’s origins and that such openness should not be interpreted as a withdrawal of support. In a direct appeal to the movement’s founder Abhijit Dipke, whom he called the ‘cockroach-in-chief’, Wangchuk said, “I am formally asking Mr Dipke to give me the figures.”Dipke, who founded the satirical social media platform that later grew into an online movement, has previously denied allegations of substantial foreign support. He shared audience data on X, claiming that more than 94 percent of the group’s followers are from India and rejected suggestions that its support base is dominated by foreign or Pakistani users.Wangchuk said making such data public would help resolve the debate. He commented, “If it is an Indian youth initiative with foreign followers, I become an even bigger fan and supporter… Even if 70 per cent are from India and the rest are spread across many countries, it at least makes India the world leader in constructive protest.”In his first post, Saxena said both sides had agreed that an “atmosphere of positivity” should prevail in Ladakh and cautioned that the protests seen in the Union Territory last year could harm tourism and economic activities. The exchange came soon after discussions between representatives of Ladakh and a sub-committee of the Home Ministry. In previous interviews, Wangchuk had expressed concern that Ladakh risked moving towards a division similar to Manipur, though he later said recent talks had helped improve the atmosphere.

Fertilizer stuck in Persian Gulf, government plans to transport it to port by road. india news

New Delhi: With 17 ships carrying fertilizer bound for India stuck in the Persian Gulf since the conflict in West Asia began, the government is considering an option to transport a part of this dry bulk commodity. As Deepak Dash reports, the plan is to move it from its current locations by road – after the ships dock – to Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu port and from there by ships to Indian ports.TOI has learned that fertilizer department officials informed an informal group of ministers (IGoM) on Wednesday that they are exploring this option, although the route is longer by road and through the Red Sea. The road journey from Persian Gulf ports to Yanbu port is about 1,200 km, people aware of the discussions said.An official said, “It is a longer route and will take more days than passing through the Strait of Hormuz. But there appears to be no other option as the passage of ships through the Strait has been badly affected. The high cost due to the delay of 60-70 days has become a major concern and the demand for fertilizers for Kharif crops will peak by mid-June.”Officials of the Department of Fertilizer informed the IGOM that if the conflict continued, the sowing season of Rabi (winter) crop would be more affected.
