Increase in number of women misusing law to get lucrative settlements: SC | india news

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday flagged the “worrying trend” of women misusing laws on dowry harassment, domestic violence and POCSO by filing frivolous and vexatious complaints against husbands and in-laws. The court said that the genuine cases are being blurred and obscured due to the “huge” number of false cases filed by the spouses as a way of “arm twisting” to reach a more attractive settlement.A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said that nowadays when a relationship turns sour, a “marital bouquet” is presented against the estranged husband and wife.“This set of cases often involves spurious and hollow allegations and false claims of harassment, cruelty and marital difficulties, often bearing little or no substance and generally not supported by any material or other documentary evidence,” the bench said. The Supreme Court said, “We also take judicial cognizance of the fact that the courts of law are being misused and the burden of such vague and vexatious litigation between spouses is increasing.”The bench said that there are many cases where women are actually looking for relief from the acts of their spouses and the onus is on the courts to separate the wheat from the chaff. It added that care should be taken to ensure that the rights and liberties of innocent parties are not trampled upon or arbitrarily taken away by dishonest and baseless litigation.“A recent trend in this regard is when the wife resorts to filing false complaints under the POCSO Act, alleging that the husband has committed undesirable acts of a sexual nature against the minor daughter. At the center of such a suit is a child who is often used by his mother against his father, against his will and wishes, to make false and vexatious complaints against his father… out of revenge or a high monetary settlement As a tactic of arm twisting to get by or simply to annoy.” Said. The court passed the order quashing criminal proceedings under POCSO filed by a girl against her father, uncle and other family members. The court said there was no evidence to prove the allegations and the girl was taught by her mother.“Courts have to exercise utmost restraint while considering such suits and criminal proceedings as any missteps and excesses can have a cascading effect on the mental and physical health of the parties involved and the sanctity of the institution of marriage.”

US judge orders removal of Donald Trump’s name from Kennedy Center, bans closure plan

US judge orders removal of Donald Trump's name from Kennedy Center, bans closure plan

A US federal judge on Friday ordered the removal of the President donald trumprenamed the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and blocked plans to temporarily close the venue for a one-year renovation, ruling that the institution’s board had exceeded its legal authority in both cases.U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordered officials to remove all signage bearing Trump’s name within 14 days and to remove references to “Trump Kennedy Center” or “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts” from official materials. In a 94-page opinion, Cooper concluded that the Kennedy Center board “overstepped its statutory limits” by unilaterally adding Trump’s name to the institution. The judge said the law establishing the center made it “clear” that it was to be named after former President John F. Kennedy and that no other formal name or public memorial could be placed based solely on the board’s decision.Cooper wrote, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.” They permanently barred the institute from displaying, installing, or maintaining physical or digital signage that would indicate it is named after anyone other than Kennedy.Cooper further ruled that the board’s March 16 vote to close the center for long-term renovation “appeared to be ill-informed and premeditated”, finding no evidence that the trustees had adequately considered how the institution would continue to meet its statutory obligations during a long-term closure. While allowing the renovation work to proceed, the judge said that any future closures would have to take into account the full legislative mandate of the Kennedy Center. This follows a decision by the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees to rename the venue the “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts” in December 2025. The move was opposed by lawmakers, historians, and members of the Kennedy family, who argued that only Congress had the authority to rename a monument established by Congress. In February this year, the plan to close the Kennedy Center for a two-year renovation was first announced by Trump, after which the board formally approved the proposal unanimously on March 16, which was closed after the July 4 ceremony.

H-1B Redditor says he applied for over 1500 jobs across the US, internet says ‘go back home’

H-1B Redditor says he applied for over 1500 jobs across the US, internet says 'go back home'
H-1B Redditor says no response even after applying for 1500+ jobs.

A Reddit post by a man claiming to be an H-1B visa holder went viral as he said he applied for over 1,500 roles across the US in the past few months and did not receive a single call from any recruiter. The Redditor revealed his background that he is not new and has an H-1B visa and has been working as a data engineer in Ohio for more than three years. But his current company has decided not to renew his H-1B application and that is why he is looking for a job.“I have practical industry experience building pipelines, working with cloud technologies, ETL workflows, and production systems. Unfortunately, my current company has decided not to renew H1B applications, which has forced me to actively seek new opportunities,” the Redditor wrote.“What’s mentally exhausting is the complete silence despite applying everywhere across the country. At this point, I really don’t know if it’s the market, my location, visa sponsorship concerns, or something else entirely,” the Redditor wrote, asking for help from the community. This post went viral for several reasons at a time when the Donald Trump administration is taking steps to stop H-1B fraud and OPT fraud. But most of the reactions were angry, asking them to go back home. The overall perception was that three years of experience is not a good field nor is data engineering a good field. Many people commented that the situation is very clear: a temporary worker on a temporary visa is no longer needed in the US and should go home.A section of commentators expressed surprise that H-1B visa holders, considered highly skilled, are not finding jobs in the country. One wrote, “Not a single call – it means your skills are useless and no one is interested in your experience. You want a job in data engineering, good luck with that as there are thousands of candidates unemployed in the market. Better pack your stuff and go back home before your savings run out.”

Iga Swiatek is once again advancing at Roland Garros. The four-time French Open champion defeated fellow Polish player Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4 in Paris on Friday to book her place in the fourth round. The win also gave Swiatek a brief chance at revenge after Linnett defeated her at the Miami Open earlier this season. The win was Swiatek’s third consecutive win at this year’s tournament and kept alive his hopes of adding another Roland Garros title to his collection. Next, she will face Marta Kostyuk, who reached the fourth round after defeating Viktorija Golubić in straight sets and extending her clay-court winning streak. However, after her latest win, Swiatek wasn’t just talking about tennis. Instead, he shared how Rafael Nadal’s lessons have helped him deal with difficult moments and stay focused during matches. Nadal, who won Roland Garros a record 14 times, spent time working with Swiatek earlier this year and says those conversations will continue to help him on court.

Iga Swiatek says Rafael Nadal’s advice and mentality will continue to help him at Roland Garros

Speaking after her win over Magda Linette, Swiatek explained that Nadal’s biggest influence was not just technical advice. “There were some technical tips, but the most you can learn from Rafa is his approach to the game and he also showed that it is not always easy,” Swiatek said.“It seems like when he lifts his trophy on TV, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes. Even the best players in the world struggle sometimes. He got over it and worked at this thing and never gave up.“Rafa is the perfect example of that and he can share some stories with me too, which is amazing because he’s really open to advice and I really appreciate that.”Swiatek began teaming up with Nadal’s former coach Francisco Roig at the beginning of the clay-court season. This partnership began after his coaching relationship with Wim Fiset ended. Roig was part of Nadal’s team during many of the Spaniard’s great successes and has also worked with Emma Raducanu and Giovanni Mpeteschi Pericard. So far, Swiatek and Roig have worked together during tournaments in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome. Although she has not won a title since the partnership began, her performance in Paris shows that she is gaining confidence at the right time. Roland Garros has been one of the most successful tournaments of Swiatek’s career. It won the trophy in 2020 and then won three consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024. Over the years, very few players have managed to stop him in Paris. Now, having been assured of another fourth round appearance, Swiatek remains one of the strongest contenders for the title. Her next challenge against Marta Kostyuk is expected to be much tougher, but the lessons she learned from Rafael Nadal will continue to help her as the tournament reaches its biggest stage yet.

Shubman Gill 104 ends Suryavanshi’s IPL 2026 party, prepares for Gujarat vs RCB final

Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans (219/3 in 18.4 overs) defeated Rajasthan Royals (214/7) by 7 wickets in Qualifier 2 to reach the IPL final. Gill (104)

And just like that, the Vaibhav Suryavanshi show is over for IPL 2026. Gujarat Titans put an end to 15 years of this brutal, incredible, thoroughly entertaining party, defeating Rajasthan Royals and storming into the final.

GT vs RR, Qualifier 2: highlighted | Achievement:

A breathtaking 96 from Suryavanshi, breathtaking not in the way his explosive strokeplay usually is, but in the painful, laborious, tough-every-run way – built against tight plans and a brilliant fast bowling display from the Gujarat Titans, was ultimately not enough in Mullanpur on Friday, May 29.

Scoring his maiden IPL century, Shubman Gill had other ideas Probably the best moment in two years. Gujarat Titans chased 215 – a target of over 200 for the first time this season – with seven wickets and eight balls to spare, with Gill and Sai Sudarshan making a brilliant 167-run opening stand that made it all look like a Sunday outing.

Both captains had said that they would have batted first and hoped that the pitch would help the team score the total. It didn’t work out that way – or perhaps more accurately, Gill and Sudarshan refused to do it.

They will now face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final – their third in five seasons – a rematch of Qualifier 1, where Gill’s team was defeated by the defending champions. But they head to Ahmedabad brimming with confidence, and the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday promises to be an exciting battle. But that’s for another day.

For now, back to New Chandigarh.

Not many people came to the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium wearing a Shubman Gill shirt, not even in the Test captain’s own backyard. Nearly half the crowd, including children, had traveled alone for one reason: Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Both the Captain and the Schoolboys gave them a lot to be happy about, but it was Punjab Da Puttar who walked away with the bragging rights when it mattered most. And that’s why teams keep struggling to make the top two.

It buys you something priceless: a second chance, a clean slate, a path to the finals even if injured. After Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Gujarat Titans in Dharamshala on Tuesday, Gujarat Titans were in exactly the same position – bruised, battered, and criticized by many. Yet they walked away free of the memory of that defeat, like a side suffering from selective amnesia.

Their bowling attack rose to the occasion and restricted Rajasthan Royals to 214 runs despite one of the most mature and brilliant innings from Suryavanshi in the IPL.
And with the bat, he was clinical and determined from the first ball. It was exactly the kind of win Gujarat Titans needed – validation of their process, their belief in a more conservative style than most in this T20 tournament on steroids.

Even on the eve of the game, when assistant coach Parthiv Patel was asked whether Gujarat were one-dimensional, predictable in their batting and bowling plans, he bristled. “Everyone has a different way of playing. We have our own style. Even in the first part of the tournament, when we were not doing that well and were doing okay, we still stuck to our process. We are confident in our ability and we know what we can do,” he said.

And that process was no secret. Gujarat Titans were a top-heavy batting team – they needed Gill, Sai Sudarshan and Jos Buttler to play big innings. They relied heavily on their in-form new ball pair of Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada to defend or set up scores. Nine of their 14 league wins were built on exactly the same script. No surprises, no trickery – just backing your best players to perform well, and often, they did.

Then came Qualifier 1, and the wheels came off brilliantly. None of the top three shot. Siraj and Rabada were taken to the cleaners. The pace not only slowed down – it collapsed. After defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad, they did the same as they traveled from Dharamshala to New Chandigarh to face Rajasthan Royals.

Yet Gujarat came out looking like a team that has completely erased the memories of Tuesday. Before this season they had never even come close to chasing 200-plus. Yet under the immense pressure of their campaign, their always reliable opening batsmen did what they do best.

Sixteen runs were scored in the first over bowled by Jofra Archer – declaring their intentions loud and clear. Even after this he did not step back. Sudarshan was dismissed for 14, the only chance the pair had in the first ten overs. There was no ruckus, no careless swing – the first six of Gujarat’s innings did not come until the ninth over. But by then he had crossed 100.

That foundation set them up for a relatively comfortable second half, even if Sudarshan fell to another odd hit wicket. Gill, regardless of this, scored 104 runs in 53 balls to take the Titans to the final.

Canada plunged into technical recession? Pierre Poilievre criticizes Mark Carney, says no other G7 country is in this position

Canada plunged into technical recession? Pierre Poilievre criticizes Mark Carney, says no other G7 country is in this position
Growth figures suggest Canada has entered what many experts would call a technical recession.

Canada entered what many experts would call a technical recession after reporting two consecutive quarters of contraction in economic growth. Statistics Canada said real gross domestic product fell 0.1 per cent on an annual basis in the first three months of this year. This comes after a one percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2025.The last time Canada was in a technical recession was in 2020, during the beginning of the pandemic. Before that, it was during the oil shock of early 2015.Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying he was the only leader in the G7 who led his country into recession. All other G7 countries face similar tariffs and problems but none have fallen into recession.“Excuses, speeches, discussions and signing ceremonies do not grow the economy,” he said.“Mark Carney is the only leader in the G7 to slide his economy into recession. All other G7 countries are facing similar tariffs and global problems, yet none are in recession…Canada is the only G7 country in recession because of the Carney Liberals increasing industrial carbon taxes, maintaining anti-growth laws and doubling Trudeau’s deficit,” Poilievre said.

What does a tech recession mean for Canada?

There is debate over whether the situation can be called a technical recession or not, as first quarter GDP was unchanged compared to a decline in the fourth quarter of last year. Douglas Porter, chief economist at BMP Capital Markets, said the difference between annual and non-annual figures leaves room for debate over whether it could be called a technical recession. He said the decline in the first quarter has been very small and can be easily revised. April’s 0.4 percent growth also offers a great glimmer of hope.“It’s very possible, you know, it could be a statistical mirage. But I don’t think it’s a debate that we’ve seen basically no growth in the last year,” Porter told CBC News. The Bank of Canada has said that the growth rate this year is likely to be 1.2 percent, which was 1.7 percent last year. It will update its projections in July.
