Bangladesh seeks China’s support for Teesta restoration project

Bangladesh seeks China's support for Teesta restoration project

DHAKA: The Tariq Rahman-led Bangladesh government has sought China’s “participation and support” for the Teesta restoration project, a move that threatens to strain New Delhi-Dhaka ties as China pushes India to work towards implementing the 2011 Teesta water-sharing treaty that was blocked by outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Dhaka is demanding a greater share in Teesta waters under the agreement – which is pending due to several reasons, including lack of coordination between the Center and Bengal. Many in Bangladesh hope that the BJP, which is at the centre, will soon form the government in Bengal, giving an opportunity to revisit the pact. China supports the new government of Bangladesh in maintaining unity and stability, reviving economic growth and improving the well-being of the people, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said after meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman here on Wednesday. The two sides discussed issues related to the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project – a major initiative of Dhaka to dredge, embank and manage the river that flows through Sikkim and Bengal in India before entering Bangladesh – primarily for flood control and irrigation, government officials said. Without saying specifics, Wang only said that China is willing to continue to provide support and assistance to Bangladesh to the best of its ability. He said China is willing to promote the alignment of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Bangladesh’s national development strategies, and deepen cooperation in traditional areas such as economy, trade, investment, infrastructure, water conservation and people-to-people exchanges. Wang said China is also considering expanding cooperation in emerging industries such as green development and digital economy. Khalilur said that China has always been a reliable and indispensable friend and partner of Bangladesh.

More than 1.1 lakh two-wheeler riders and pedestrians to die on roads in 2024 india news

Over 1.1 lakh two-wheeler riders and pedestrians killed on roads in 2024

New Delhi: At least six out of every 10 road accident victims in India in 2024 were two-wheeler riders/pedestrians, according to the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). An analysis of four years of data shows that both the share and number of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians killed in accidents have steadily increased amid the government’s focus on making cars safer.NCRB data for 2024 shows that over 1.1 lakh deaths – 64% of the total 1.75 lakh road deaths – were of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. The data also shows that the number of pedestrians killed in road accidents has exceeded that of car riders, making pedestrians the second most affected category of road users after two-wheeler riders. This trend highlights the low priority given to pedestrian safety in the development of the country’s road network. At 15.1%, car riders accounted for the second largest share (23,531) of road deaths in 2021. However, in 2022, the number of pedestrians killed reached 24,742, exceeding the number of car riders killed, and this trend has continued for the past three years. In 2024, pedestrian deaths were 25,769, second only to two-wheeler rider deaths, which were 84,599.Road safety experts across the world, including India, have urged policymakers to focus more on the safety of motorized two-wheelers, the most affordable and convenient mode of personal transportation for millions of people. They account for about three-quarters of all vehicles. The highest number of deaths in two-wheeler accidents occurred in Tamil Nadu (11,786) and Uttar Pradesh (8,575).According to the report, most road accidents (61.2%) were caused by speeding, with just over one lakh deaths. 46,132 people lost their lives due to dangerous and reckless driving or overtaking.Road-wise breakdown of accident data shows that nearly one lakh deaths (58% of all deaths) occurred on national highways and state highways in 2024.

Chirayu Rana appoints lawyer representing Epstein’s accusers in lawsuit against JPMorgan executive Lorna Hajdini

Chirayu Rana appoints lawyer representing Epstein's accusers in lawsuit against JPMorgan executive Lorna Hajdini

A former JPMorgan banker accused of making explosive sexual harassment claims against a senior executive has hired a high-profile New York lawyer best known for representing Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers.Indian-origin former Wall Street analyst Chirayu Rana is being represented by Daniel Kaiser of law firm Kaiser, Sauerborn & Mayer. Kaiser has previously acted for several women who brought claims against convicted sex offender and pedophile Epstein, who died in 2019.Rana has sued JPMorgan Executive Director Lorna Hajdini, alleging she drugged him with Viagra and repeatedly sexually assaulted him. The claims were rejected by the bank and Hazdini. The lawsuit details a series of disturbing allegations, including allegations that Hajdini used drugs and coercion to control her. However, JPMorgan says an internal investigation found no evidence to support the claims. A spokesperson said that Rana refused to fully cooperate with investigators and refused to provide important supporting details. Hajdini has also rejected the allegations through his lawyers.According to the Wall Street Journal, JPMorgan had previously offered Rana about $1 million to settle the dispute, but he rejected it and demanded more than $20 million instead.Rana’s attorney Kaiser told The New York Post: “A motion was filed today seeking an order allowing my client to proceed by John Doe. Attached to those papers are corroborating evidence of his claims. And there’s more.”Kaiser has also said that he expects the case to escalate as more evidence is presented. The controversy has also drawn attention because of Kaiser’s legal background, which includes representing Epstein’s accusers such as Jennifer Araoz, who sued Epstein’s estate and associates after long-running abuse allegations.JPMorgan said its own internal review, which included examining emails and work records, found no authenticity to Rana’s claims. The bank also noted that Rana and Hajdini worked under different reporting lines, meaning it had no control over their compensation or pay.Colleagues have previously described Rana as “socially awkward”, while Hajdini is internally considered a strong performing executive in the finance team.

CAG: Governance hinders ease of urban mobility. india news

CAG: Governance hinders ease of urban mobility
CAG Sanjay K Murthy (file photo)

New Delhi: Comptroller and Auditor General Sanjay K Murthy on Thursday said governance is the hindrance behind failed urban mobility in the country. It is not about wanting roads or rail but about wanting systems that work together.“The solutions are not unknown. London, Stockholm and Singapore have demonstrated that congestion pricing, combined with strong public transport, can reduce traffic by 20-30%. The knowledge is there. The technology is there. What, then, is the cultural barrier?” The CAG asked how come we build metro lines that do not connect to the bus network, we build flyovers that only move crowds.CAG was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day meeting of federal auditors of BRICS countries in Bengaluru, in which participating countries included China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. He said that if adequate capital expenditure fails to reduce the average commute time, it is not an infrastructure deficit that we are seeing, it is a failure of governance.“We are conducting a special audit of 101 Indian cities assessing ease of living from the citizens’ perspective based on quality of life, accessibility, sustainability and perception. And we are also auditing multi-modal transport and first-mile, last-mile logistics in partnership with institutions like IITs and IIMs and the World Bank,” the CAG shared its work with the audit heads of the BRICS countries.Murthy recalled a quote from former President APJ Abdul Kalam, “A vision without action is merely a dream and action without accountability is mere expenditure. Accountability is ours.” He said that auditors play an important role in providing useful information and inputs for effective administration.“In an age of ease of living, we must ask a deeper question: Does spending change lives? A city can build a hundred flyovers and still fail its citizens. A city can pass every compliance audit and still be very easy to live in,” he said. The Chief Auditor of India said that his institution provides value added products such as Departmental Appreciation Notes, Management Letters and Study Reports, which serve as real aids to the management and keep citizens and stakeholders meaningfully informed.

Black Mambas Aren’t Actually Black: 10 Interesting Facts About The Fastest Snake On Earth

Black Mambas Aren't Actually Black: 10 Interesting Facts About The Fastest Snake On Earth

The black mamba is one of the scariest snakes on the planet, but much of its reputation is built on misunderstanding and myth. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, this highly venomous reptile is renowned for its incredible speed, powerful neurotoxic venom, and intimidating defensive display. Yet, despite its name, the snake is not actually black. Instead, its body is usually brown, olive, or gray in color, while the inside of its mouth is the deep inky color that inspired its name. Black Mambas are far more shy than many people assume, often avoiding confrontation whenever possible. Here are 10 interesting facts about the world’s fastest snake.

10 interesting facts about black mamba

1. Black Mambas are not actually blackThe black mamba gets its name from the deep blue-black color of the inside of its mouth rather than the color of its scales. Its body is usually brown, olive, gray or brown, depending on age and habitat. When threatened, the snake opens its mouth wide as part of a defensive display, revealing the black interior that gave the species its famous name. This species is scientifically known as Black Mamba.2. It is the fastest snake on earthBlack mambas can move at speeds of about 20 kilometers per hour for short distances, making them the fastest known snake species on Earth.Their long, slender bodies and powerful muscles allow them to travel quickly across grasslands, rocky terrain and open savannas. However, they do not chase humans, despite popular myths suggesting the contrary. The fastest speed occurs when the snake is escaping danger rather than hunting.

This is the fastest snake on earth

3. They can be incredibly tallBlack Mambas are among the longest venomous snakes in the world. Adults typically reach a length of 2 to 3 metres, although some individuals exceed 4 metres.Their size gives them an attractive appearance, especially when they raise a large part of their body above the ground during defensive behavior.Despite their length, they remain extremely agile and can move with remarkable precision.4. Their poison attacks Nervous systemBlack mamba venom is primarily neurotoxic, meaning it affects the nervous system. Without treatment, bites can lead to paralysis and respiratory failure.Symptoms may include dizziness, blurred vision, difficulty breathing, blinking, and loss of muscle control. Modern antivenom has greatly improved survival rates, but rapid medical treatment remains important.Although highly dangerous, black mambas generally prefer to avoid conflict and only bite when cornered or threatened.5. They are active mostly during the dayUnlike many snake species that are active at night, black mambas are diurnal, meaning they hunt and move primarily during daylight. They spend most of the day searching for prey or sunbathing to regulate body temperature. Their excellent vision helps them detect motion from great distances. At night, they often return to the same shelter, such as hollow trees, rock crevices or abandoned termite mounds.6. Black Mambas are highly intelligent huntersResearchers and wildlife experts often describe the black mamba as alert and highly aware of its surroundings. They rely on both vision and chemical sensing through their forked tongue to locate prey.Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, and occasionally other reptiles. After biting the prey, the snake usually retreats and waits for its venom to stabilize before swallowing the animal whole.

6. Black Mambas are highly intelligent hunters

7. They can lift most of their body off the groundOne of the most fearsome defensive behaviors of the black mamba is its ability to raise a large part of its body upright. Some individuals can raise about a third of their body length above the ground while slightly flattening their neck. This posture makes the snake larger and more dangerous to predators. When combined with hissing and its black mouth display, this behavior creates one of the most recognizable warning displays in the snake world.8. They live in most of sub-Saharan AfricaBlack mambas are found in many African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Ethiopia, Namibia, and parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They inhabit savannas, rocky hills, forests, and lightly wooded areas. Despite popular belief, they are not primarily wild snakes. This species prefers warm environments with suitable hiding places and ample prey availability.9. Female black mamba lay eggsBlack mambas reproduce by laying eggs rather than giving birth to live young. Females may lay 6 to 17 eggs in hidden, warm places such as rotting vegetation or hollows. The eggs incubate for several months before hatching.Young black mambas are venomous from birth and are able to hunt small prey soon after emerging.10. They play an important ecological roleDespite their fearsome reputation, black mambas play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance. By controlling rodent populations and other small animals, they help regulate food chains in their habitats.Like many predators, they are an important part of biodiversity and ecological stability.Human expansion, habitat destruction, and direct killing by people remain constant threats to many snake populations throughout Africa.
